Most inexpensive way to communicate

If you are on Harmony or any of the Quantum class ships, you can oay $8 per device per cruise and get texting ability. These ships are also currently exhibiting a hole in the firewall that allows iMessage texting for free, but that can end at any time.

Any other ship would currently require either the purchase of an internet package or pay your cell carrier $0.50 per text if you have AT&T or Verizon.

Talking to the others in your party is a great way to know what everyone's plans are for the day. Prearrange "meet up" times for meals, and then give your future plans to everyone.

There aren't THAT many public places on a ship (most of the ship is cabin space!) so it's not too difficult to "find" each other!

It really is not that hard.

On all my trips, I have never used any device or app and rarely have any issues.

Just do a little pre-planning and common sense.

I use the house phones around the ship to call the rooms.

Sometimes a note...

Smoke signals are inexpensive, but apparently frowned upon.

I did hear from a reliable source that if you tell the crew you reaaallly need to use the intercom they will escort you to the bridge.

You'll probably need to tip them a little however...

We were on Anthem a week ago. The free Royal iQ app (be sure to download it before you get to the port) allowed us to send iMessages between our iPhones with our phones on Airplane mode. (iMessages are sent via wi-fi.) Others have reported being able to do the same, for many months. I suspect RCI does not intend for this to happen (since they are selling a communications package), but it did work.

Our main shipboard communications tool has always been a pack of yellow Post Its. Leave a note on the mirror: "7am, Gone to the Gym." :D

Have a great cruise!

How do you sign up for the $8 per device for texting ability? On the ship or can you do it in advance?

You do it on the ship, using the Royal IQ App. Download the app before you get on the ship.

Thank you. Right now the Royal IQ App only lists 4 ships. Allure, Enchantment, Oasis and Serenade. I will be sailing on the Harmony in August. Will Harmony still have this ability for texting?

I think you are looking at the Royal Caribbean App, not the Royal IQ App. They are different, and only the Royal IQ app has texting. The Royal IQ app functions only on Quantum class ships and Harmony.

Can confirm the iMessage “free texting” worked as of three weeks ago on Harmony. I had a Voom S&S package with Royal IQ, my wife had nothing and worked for both of us.

Do we know yet if this will work on Symphony?

We don't think Royal IQ will be expanded to any other ships, that app is no longer being developed. Royal has shifted development to the Royal Caribbean App, which will likely work on Symphony, but currently has no texting capability. There has been no info from the cruise line on any ETA on texting capability.

Thanks Bob. I hadn't seen anything either. I hope there is some texting ability on SotS!

Is the app, I message, imessenger, or I messages ? What does the app icon look like? Thank you.

The function is called iMessage, and is standard (and only available) on Apple products. You just use the "Messages" app, and the phone's config and contact info determine if the Messages app will use iMessage or SMS/MMS.

EVERYONE: You are on vacation - leave your phone in the safe and talk to each other. Use sticky notes on your doors. Plan times to meet up. Use the house phones. Be on vacation and leave technology in the room.

Sorry...just my opinion. :)

I just downloaded, and it says Harmony, Anthem, Ovation and Quantum.

I was hoping for the Serenade....

We also enjoy using a magnetic white board on our cabin door. We also get some unusual notes left from people we don't know.

Cheers,

:)
