Some Random Thoughts from Current Oasis sailing...

Hi All! We are finally on our first family cruise on the Oasis Western itinerary and its day 5, a sea day. This is the first time I’ve had a chance to look at my phone all cruise, which is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. Our 5 year old is at the kids club, but our 3 year old was tired so he’s napping in the room. And I have 1.5 hours to kill in here before our second formal night dinner so I’m reluctantly looking at my phone (the Casino was my first choice on this cloudy, on-again off-again rain day, but it wasn’t in the cards, so to speak).

My wife said earlier she wanted to play bingo. Like she really wanted to play. And I was like “WHAT? BINGO? Really???” I was picturing her and the 4 Golden Girls and nobody else (because everyone else has a more exciting plan) sitting in a small room wondering what they could possibly chat about over the course of their boring bingo game.

When my son decided a nap was preferred to the kids club, my kind wife offered to stay in the room and nap with him so I could chase a jackpot in the casino, but she never asks for anything and she looked oddly excited about this bingo game, so I told her I’d watch my buddy for the nap. I then walked my wife down to the bingo line with my tired son, and realized I’m ignorant to the worldwide allure of cruise ship bingo. Clearly, I drastically underestimated the level of interest and diverse age demographic of the bingo game. There’s like a million people down there in the huge theater of all ages, shapes, and sizes and they are all very excited to be a part of this bingo game. Who knew bingo was so popular??? (I realize you all knew and I’m the only dumb guy that didn’t-now I know).

Anyway that was a long way of saying my wife is playing bingo, my daughter is playing in the kids club, my son is asleep and I’m typing on my phone on the Oasis of the Seas.

I read and planned a LOT before this trip and I genuinely appreciate the time you all take to share info, so I thought I’d come back and share my thoughts so far. These are in no particular order, and although I hope to come back and do a full report when I return, I’m not sure that’ll actually happen once I’m back at work.

1. Initial impressions: the ship is awesome and is just what I expected looking at the 2000 you tube videos of it. It’s a very nice ship in every way and I’m glad I dumped the Disney Fantasy vacation we originally had booked for double the cost. This is way better for the price and for everyone to have fun.

2. Jetty park boat marina at port Canaveral was a great place to watch the ships sail out Saturday.

3. Our daughter has celiac disease so she must be strictly gluten free. I’ll post a whole thread on this when I get home so it’s easily searchable, but generally speaking the ship staff have been great. You need to figure out the right people to talk with (the head waiters and chefs are excellent-everyone else is clueless). I’m happy with this, as onshore, usually everyone is clueless, so to have a headwaiter and chef who “get it” is invaluable and I’m so very thankful for that. Side note-having a kid with an autoimmune disease or food allergy can be stressful even under the best of circumstances. Like when well-meaning friendly people offer her cookies, etc. It happens all the time and the cruise is no different. But overall I’m quite happy with RC’s efforts to accommodate her.

4. Our headwaiter Ian is fantastic.

5. The Schooner bar has excellent service.

6. The Globe and Atlas pub has surly service.

7. Sorrentos pizza isn’t as bad as you all on Cruise Critic make it out to be. Or maybe I have low standards? Or maybe I’m eating it at midnight after indulging in the deluxe drink package and I don’t realize it’s bad? It’s likely a combination of all of the above, but I’m happy with it.

8. The casino only has 8 operational video poker machines. I find that odd.

9. Adventure Ocean: Ok I’ve been freaking out for months because my son celebrated his 3rd birthday on embarkation day and I wasn’t sure if he would be fully potty trained to their standards by day 1, but we have worked hard at it and so far, so good. On formal night 2 he had trouble with his fancy pants & when I picked him up, he had on Adventure Ocean shorts. I was mortified and afraid he would get kicked out. Instead there was a very calm lady who said he was just having trouble with his outfit & he now has a souvenir. She was so friendly and non-judge about it. I love her. What a relief! I think they can tell the difference between kids who are actually trained (ours is but he still messes up occasionally), and parents dropping off a non-trained kid, but the fact that I got “souvenir shorts” instead of a lecture and final warning was such a relief. The staff there have also been fantastic in every other way. I love them. And my kids love it there (though the 3 year old is spending more time with me than in the club).

10. Junior Suite 6640: I love this room. Large balcony, fantastic stateroom attendant, and super convenient to everywhere I want to be. With the 2 small kids we are spending a lot of time in the room and it’s great to have extra space, a balcony, and be close to the pizza place and schooner bar so I can bring food and drinks back to the room for my wife and myself while the kids sleep. I couldn’t think of a better location on the ship for our needs.

11. The adventure ocean pirate show is super cute!

12. Labadee is awesome. It was so fun and relaxing. I loved it.

13. The first sea day was a terrible weather day (windy and boat moving a lot). I was afraid the ship would move like that constantly but it was only bad that day. But yes, Oasis does move around too...

14. If you have a balcony, maybe don’t leave the light on all night every night like our neighbors. It makes it hard for your neighbors to see the sky. I asked our cabin steward to turn off their light today and he did. My hope is they didn’t know how to turn it off and won’t notice it’s off now. But if it’s back on tonight I’ll just sigh & know that’s how they like it.

15. Speaking of balcony behavior that’s disturbing to neighbors, smoking weed??? Really??? Yes people are smoking weed somewhere and I’m tired of smelling it. Fortunately it’s not all night every night but when they light up it’s annoying.

16. Most staff and passengers are great. As in the rest of life, they’re like 80% great and 20% not great. I’m happy with that. Lots of nice people all around! I’ll ignore the other 20% (again, as in the rest of life).

17. Overall I’m LOVING this cruise. I haven’t even gotten off the ship and I want to come back already!

18. I booked shows and dutifully looked at cruise planners posted online prior to the trip. In spite of this, we still haven’t been to a show (except the Adventure Ocean Pirate show). I also haven’t even glanced at a cruise compass. Has anyone ever posted on here that a 3 year old and 5 year old will consume ALL OF YOUR TIME??? Because they will! Don’t kid yourself and think you’ll see 5 shows! [emoji3]

19. Why is my wife still at this bingo game? How long is this going to last anyway?

That’s all I can think of now. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask! I may not look at my phone until after we get home but if I know the answer to any question asked I’ll be sure to answer it!

I remember taking our first cruise when our daughter was 6. Seems like yesterday. She’s 33 now and we’ve enjoyed many family cruises over the years.

On formal night 2 he had trouble with his fancy pants & when I picked him up, he had on Adventure Ocean shorts. I was mortified and afraid he would get kicked out. Instead there was a very calm lady who said he was just having trouble with his outfit & he now has a souvenir. She was so friendly and non-judge about it. I love her. What a relief! I think they can tell the difference between kids who are actually trained (ours is but he still messes up occasionally), and parents dropping off a non-trained kid, but the fact that I got “souvenir shorts” instead of a lecture and final warning was such a relief. The staff there have also been fantastic in every other way. I love them. And my kids love it there (though the 3 year old is spending more time with me than in the club).

 

10. Junior Suite 6640: I love this room. Large balcony, fantastic stateroom attendant, and super convenient to everywhere I want to be. With the 2 small kids we are spending a lot of time in the room and it’s great to have extra space, a balcony, and be close to the pizza place and schooner bar so I can bring food and drinks back to the room for my wife and myself while the kids sleep. I couldn’t think of a better location on the ship for our needs.

Do not let your kids miss the “Move It, Move It, Move It Parade” on the last day!! It only lasts 15min but is so cute and lively!! They will get to see all the characters and it is so much fun!!

Try to go early and stake out a spot in front of Sorrentos Pizza for the best viewing area....

Sounds like a great family trip! Our first was when our boys were 2 and 4 on the Disney Magic, and we’ve done about a dozen since on all the major kid-friendly lines except MSC and Royal is the kid’s favorite for sure (next one upcoming Anthem 9-night in 3 weeks!). They’re now 5 and 8 and love cruising as much as we do. We’re past nap time now, so we get a lot more “adult” time while the kids are in Adventure Ocean - we almost have to make them come out when it’s time lol. They really love it. We usually have them stay on board during one port too, which gives Mom & Dad some quiet time. It DOES get better time-wise, but every cruise we’ve been on has been amazing.

P.S. PLEASE report the weed smokers - smoking of any kind is not allowed on balconies and they definitely frown upon illegal substances.

P.P.S. Bingo finished an hour ago and your wife is enjoying not hearing “mom, mom, mommy” every 2 minutes :-)

Oh, and make sure you get the “make your own” pizza at Sorrento’s - much better, though they stop serving it around 9-10

thank you for the review, I'm celiac too and was a bit concerned about the food on the ship. We are sailing on 6/3, hopefully you will post a bit more about your experience with the food , thank you in advance!

Thank you so much for your candor! Do you write for a living, because you have a talent! Anyway, we were on the Oasis in March, and did not smell any marijuana - thank goodness.

So glad I read this as we too cancelled a Disney cruise and booked one on the Allure. We have only sailed Disney in the past, and was so afraid of being disappointed. Great review, thanks for sharing.

Hey all! One or 2 more random thoughts:

1. We are in Cozumel today. The original plan was to go to Paradise Beach as the reviews and pictures are beautiful! But since my kids sleep in and take like 20 hours to get dressed and eat breakfast, we decided it wasn’t worth the effort today. I’m sure when they are old enough to get out of the room in under 17 hours, we will make it to Paradise Beach.

2. The people who tell you the ship is awesome on port days are right. I’m not even sad we aren’t at the beach because I’m sitting down and not carrying anything anywhere like the pack mule/concierge/personal genie my children have masterfully figured out how to turn me into. Is this what the rest of you do on vacation? Sit down and relax? This is very satisfying, but also unfamiliar and making me a little uneasy. In a good way though.

3. The little circular pool by the splash pad is closed because they are painting it. See here is a picture of that:

This little pool is a torture chamber for parents and I’m giddy like a schoolgirl that it’s closed right now. My only hope is that it’s closed again tomorrow and every other day from now until eternity. My kids love to torture me in this chamber by the way. Great family fun!

4. Speaking of painting, there are people everywhere, every day cleaning and fixing things on this ship. I’m impressed. I’m a little distressed that I’ve read reviews stating this ship is showing its age or lost its luster or whatever. Again, as with me thinking sorrenros pizza is perfectly fine, I may have low standards or beer goggles on, but I think this ship is fantastic in every way.

The pizza at Sorrentos last week definitely seemed improved over the last time I ate it, a year ago. Maybe it was just fresher? But it wasn't near as bad as I recalled and I hadn't been drinking all day lol.

This is exactly why all of our family vacations are cruises right now. With 5 & 8 year old boys, we don't get much quiet time!

On our Oasis cruise in February, I asked about the "Make your own pizza." Was told no longer available. I believe thae antipasto bar is in it's place.

Don’t kid yourself and think you’ll see 5 shows! " TRUTH! We had a wonderful cruise with our 4-year-old (first time cruising with kiddo) but traveling with a kid does make things different. We tried to stick to his bed time ish so we found ourselves taking turns going out at night. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything but it definitely does make cruising different. Activities during the day are different too when you have a child. Had so much fun though!
