RCCL Smoking Policies

Recommended Posts

Non-smoking ashtrays! THANK YOU! What a wonderful gesture and great idea. We also tried Celebrity - twice - and hurried back to RCI. I think we cruised with Celebrity when smoking was still allowed on balconies. And, that must be where I got the idea that there was non-smoking sections in the casino. I've always thought it would be nice if the casino was aft (or forward) with doors to an open deck for ventilation. On the old Dawn Pirncess, the casino was in the nose of the ship ... no doors as I remember.

I think I meant to type "that there was a non-smoking section in the RCI casino." Let me edit the above to "that there were non-smoking ... " Gad, no more posting before the sun comes up and a cup of coffee.

It's already happened on Celebrity, an RCCL company. It's actually just a matter of time. No luck needed!:)

Perhaps some lines will do this but it would be with serious $$ consequences (which is why many have not).

I'm sure all the cruise lines know that banning smoking would mean a mad rush of smokers to other cruise lines that allow smoking ...

Celebrity it appears has made a grab for the non smoking crowd, but I'm guessing that's a side bet RCCL can afford to take ... after all they know smokers will still continue to sail on RCCL (non Celebrity) ships.

I'm a smoker...and I go out of my way to be considerate of others. Smoke is smoke, whether its from a cigarette, a barbeque, a burning house...none of it is good for your health, and I'm sure all smokers realize that. I get tired of people's heavy perfume, loud obnoxious drunken behavior, rudeness, etc., and yes, I am aware that perfume, loud obnoxious drunken behaviour and rudeness does not carry health issues for others...but neither does me or my H smoking a cigarette for 5 minutes outdoors on OUR balcony on a 7 day cruise in which we spend about 40% of our time in our room. Sometimes, we can take things a little too far. I will be respectful, if others are respectful. There have been times when our neighbors use horrible language while sitting out on THEIR balcony...I don't want to hear all the curse words and various names they call their body parts, but I wouldn't dare knock on their door and tell them to stop...I deal with it, or I go out when they go in. Its their vacation, just as much as mine...what we need is toleration and consideration on both sides

It could actually backfire and go the other way. If revenue is down- some smoking restrictions on Celebrity could be lifted a bit.Celebrity seems to be doing many things complained about here. Formal is still in, smoking is highly restricted, perks for returning guests are much better, auto tips [i think:confused:] and even offering drink packages. All things that many here have said they would like from this company.

Who knows. Most here just post personal preference and don't work for the company where your job description is revenue makers or breakers.

Personally-I think smoking on the RC line is about as restricted as it is going to get for a while.

No one says anyone has to sail RC or its sister line Celebrity. You choose the line that best suits you. If smoking on a balcony will flare up allergies-look outside the RC box and possibly another line will offer you what you need.

You really can't say in the same sentence-I'm allergic but didn't have fun on the other line. As a consumer-you have to give somewhere. sometimes-you just can't have it all!!;)

and unfortunately maybe cruising may not be right for certain people if their health can't handle what is happening on board???

I am a non smoker who would like to see more restrictions but understand the rules as they are in place right now and accept that if smoking is going on some place I am (and it is ok to smoke there) and I don't like its up to me to move. I just wish everyone would be respectful of the other side of the equation.

I am a non smoker and absolutely hate smoke, most of the time I have been fine with a balcony, but, I do try for the center hump, or one facing backwards, so that may help limit the exposure with the way that the wind blows. RCL is better than many others :) I di avoid the casino, even on the non smoking nights there is a residual odour.

I really get headaches and have smoke allergies. Many people on my cruise complained because people were smoking in the bar while we were doing trivia games. Ironically, the smokers weren't even playing trivia! The Cruise Director's staff tried to ask people not to smoke during the organized games but that didn't work. It was a 13 day cruise and by day 7 I was quite miserable and virtually useless by day 10.

This year, I'm going to try the personal air purifier that you wear around your neck. I know it sounds silly, but I used to get ill in Europe and Japan while staying in non-smoking hotel rooms where someone else was indeed smoking in the next room. I bought my own air purifier and I felt GREAT, even though smoke was coming in my room through the A/C. So, since I can't carry a plug in air purifier with me to the trivia game, I figure, we'll try the personal one and see if it at least cleans the air in my space enough so that I can have fun and not infringe on other people's right to smoke.

If this doesn't work...I'll have to wait until we get the "non-smoking" cruise.

hi to all-- You may want to consider Carnival Dream (he he) - their Casino is 95% non- smoking.. & very few public outside smoking areas...only the piano bar, cabins w/ balconys .... all the SPA cabins are non smoking even on their balconies.;)

happy sailing

The smokers are aware that snarky remarks and even remarks from non-smokers hoping they die soon seem to be perectly acceptable to some. They generally play by the rules. I accidentally got mixed up about which side of the deck I was on one evening and lit up. My heart started racing, since there's no where to put the errant cigarette OUT. I stamped it out with the heel of my shoe, took it with me and raced to the smoking side. Thankfully, no one was out there to scold, deride or have some sort of attack. I have also been on the smoking side of the pool deck, under the shade and had a non-smoker sit down in the chair beside me and ORDER me to " put your da*n cigarette out. I'm allergic." I put it out, but pointed out, thinking he wasn't aware, that he was on the smoking side. He was quick to say, "I can tell you to put it out any da*m place I want to." I moved further down the deck, while he stayed firmly planted on the smoking side looking for a smoker to intimidate. Getting a headache from an odor doesn't necessarily mean an allergy. If I'm near someone with heavy perfume or colgne, I'll develop a headache and stuffy nose within minutes of being exposed to their smell. I'm not allergic. Some non-smokers hate the smoker, not the smoke. It's politically ok be be a raging fanatic about banning smoking. I don't have the ability to say, "your perfume, while probably expensive is burning the lining of my nose and throat. Do you mind stopping by your cabin and taking a shower" or "you you mind moving to other seats in the theater" or covering my nose with my clothing and making a run past a smoker so show how horribly dangerous/offensive position the smoker has put them in. The smoker has the ability to pick and choose which bar, which side of the pool and whether they want to book a balcony and chance being next to a smoker. Believe me, the smoker doesn't want to be next to you either. We try to be tolerant, in case you really do have allergies. I say "in case" because I honestly do believe that some (not all) people who cry "allergic" do so as an excuse to jusify the over-the-top behavior and remarks they exhibit. The allergic person doesn't intentionally plant themselves in the smoking area, they don't go to a slot machine and stay long enought to even know if slot machines are better on the smoking side, they don't go to the cigar lounge. They avoid those areas, just as smokers avoid the no smoking side of the deck, the non-smoking night in the casios, the inside cabins where they have to trek up to the deck to smoke. They are just plain intolerant, not allergic, it's not about their health. They just harp on and on, they are the loudest, most rude complainers of all. They are the reason a non-smoker with an allergy wants to know the best way to alert someone smoking about their allergy. If you didn't have so many of the hard-core fanatics, or the ones who insist on invading the space of the smoker to attack, intimidate or bully them, the response would be different from the smoker. Your best bet would be to act respectful to them, just as you wish them to be respectful to you.

Just curious what made you pick this thread to add a response to. It had died a nice death 4 1/2 months ago, and there's been at least 50-100 other threads on smoking in the interim, including a couple that are active right now.

And your rights stop when they impact what I breathe. I have also paid "extra" for my balcony where I can sit, read, and not have to inhale your secondhand smoke.

The smoking situation was terrible. When we were in ports, the stench was so bad I could not leave my balcony door open. When we were underway it was a little better, but still the stench of burned tobacco wafted into my cabin. I could not leave the door open at all. I of course complained and was told that nothing could be done about it.

Inside the ship the centrum stank of smoke also. It was because of all the allowed areas which caused the smoke to travel to the centrum. I mentioned this also to the front desk, and was basically told that I am full of crap, and to forget out it.

My comments to smokers is that my non-smoking does not cause you to have to endure any foul odor of mine. OTOH your smoking causes that your foul odor to have to be endured by me. Get it?

Reminds me of an old Steve Martin joke:

"Do you mind if I smoke?"

"No. Do you mind if I fart?"

Amen. Not to mention the health aspect of it all. Some (not all) smokers just don't get it.

Why do non-smokers always go to the areas people are smoking? Aren't there enough non-smoking areas on the ships these days!

As they say: "If you don't like the heat, stay out of the kitchen". If you don't like the smell of smoke or smokers, stay away from their "turf" on the ship or better yet, stop complaining and cruise on a Disney ship! No smoking, no gambling!

If most of these non-smokers are so offended by smoke, why do they constantly and consistently cruise and complain? It makes no sense. You know there are still smokers on board, so why book a cruise that is so unpleasant for you and complain here? Perhaps a land vacation is best for all of you.

Enough already! The ships are large enough to be able to avoid the few areas allowed for smokers....Stay away, please!!

Have a nice day!

But therein lies the rub. Smoking is allowed. So you have paid extra to gamble that there won't be a smoker. Smokers pay extra knowing full well that they can.
