SMOKERS in regards to Smoking Policy

Have not heard much from the X fans who ARE smokers. IMO (and I AM a smoker by the way) I LOVE the smoking policy. May seem a little odd to some, but I dispise not only my own addiction but being around the smell of it. I would much rather move to a designated place (probably might deter me from smoking so much if I always have to schlep somewhere) do the dirty deed and go on with my day. I hate the smell of people who are ENGULFED in the smell of tobacco, sometimes it is evident by their odor that they smoke in their homes or cars with little ventilation or fresh air. As odd as it may seem to some, although I do enjoy to light up and smoke, I really do detest the smell being around me constantly. How do other smokers feel about the subject...??

Use to smoke. the only way I was able to quit was just getting away from it in all the ways possible. When I was in the Navy, I got a non-smoking roommate so I didn't smoke in our SR...I made the Ready Room (kind of the 'office' for the squadron aboard a Carrier) non-smoking. Things like that. When I was quitting, if I saw someone light up, that 'voice/urge' turned on and that's all I could think of. Gave my secretary my cigs so I had to go to her to bum on off her. Did whatever it took to isolate myself and make it hard to do.

So you are right...the Celebrity approach is a major step up. You can now go and have a drink without turning and seeing someone light up and your 'voice' goes off in your head. And once you are away from it...you become one of those pain in the rear fanatics. Not because we are judgemental, but because we know how the 'inner voice' works and it doesn't go away for a long time.

gone for me now, but fully understand your post. Excellent view of it. I'm glad they did away with the Michaels Club cigar time....just too hard on us old addicts.

Going on the Princess in Jan 11 - don't have to worry about getting sucked in again, but it is a differnt atmosphere and that may color my view of the cruise.

I am what I like to refer to as a non-smoking smoker. I am the only one in my family that smokes and am constantly being harrassed by my DH. That is one of the reasons for booking our upcoming cruise on Celebrity. Having sailed on the Summit last summer, we had the best of both worlds. Hubby was able to enjoy a virtually smoke free environment and I could sneak away when the urge hit me to have a smoke. I don;t even like to admit I smoke to casual aquaintences. We (smokers) are definately in the minority these days, and rightfully so. I have tried to quit several (too many to count) times, and just hope that one day I will be successful. Sneaking off to the naughty smoking zone on Celebrity, does cut down on the amount I smoked on our last cruise.

I am also a smoker and my husband is not. I have found there are plenty of places to smoke on the ship port side. In the mornings I would go up and have coffee on port side aft or near the pool and met lots of great people up there doing the same thing. Kind of like a smokers club in the morning. I also don't like the smell of cigs and am glad you cannot smoke in the bars or casino or balconys. It really is smelly business. I am a very considerate smoker and try to stay away from people when I do smoke on a daily baises. I like Celebritys smoking policy just as long as I have one little spot I can go and not bother anyone I am fine.

I am a smoker that does not have a problem with Celebrity's smoking policy. If it was a deal-breaker, I would sail with another cruise line. I smoke only in the designated areas.

Yes, smokers are rightfully in the minority these days. I always try to be respectful of non-smokers and am grateful when that respect is returned. Unfortunately, there are some non-smokers out there that have no problem openly criticizing smokers, even to their faces about how they feel about our habit. A few years ago we were on a cruise (not on X) and myself and a friend were in a designated smoking area, yet this horrid man insisted on stopping and lecturing us about how filthy and disgusting we are for smoking. I returned the favor by informing him of how filthy and disgusting he is for being overweight. Maybe was not taking the high road, but seriously, mind your own business! As long as it is legal and I am in a designated area, keep it to yourself. (Thanks for allowing that mini-rant.)

I love you people. :D You all sound thoughtful and considerate. As a non-smoker, Celebrity's smoking policy was a big factor in deciding whether to cruise Princess, Royal Caribbean or Celebrity this fall. I still have some concern about those who smoke on their verandas. (We had a cigar smoker next to us on NCL in 2008.) We'll just hope for the best.

And Rothjer, maybe we'll see you and your wife on the Summit in a few months. We're all cruising out of San Juan on Oct. 30.

Chantix. Don't believe the bad things you hear. It is a miracle drug and I just celebrated my 2 year no puffin anniversary. I smoked almost 2 packs a day for 30 years! (bought a LV bag with my saved cig money, I call it my no puffin purse!)

As a smoker I have become accustomed to having to do something to have a smoke. At home, work, or at a restaurant or bar, I get up and go outside to designated area. So when I am on a cruise I find it strange to be able to light up practically everywhere, almost uncomfortable. Rather than light up in the casino, piano bar, etc. I generally go outside to a designated area.

So whether it's Carnival or Celebrity won't alter my smoking preferences.

By the way, I have recently started with Chantix and am having no adverse side effects. I have reduced to three or four a day (from a pack and a half), but am having trouble getting to zero - maybe a crutch at this point. I will keep plugging away.

As a smoker...who doesn't smoke much (1/2 pack or less per day).....our recent Equinox cruise would have been frustrating for non-smokers in some locations. Outside areas close to dining and bars are smalll enough (and there were enough of US) to overwhelm the neighborhood (forward and mid-ship). Admittedly there were tons of Europeans onboard this cruise....and they tend to have more smokers. But...If I had a cabin on Deck 7 or 8 port side.....the whole side of the ship must stink in the evenings when everyone comes out before/after dinner and drinking...not to mention casino pals. I think the cruise line would be better to break it up a bit.......I met the same folk out there every night (and in the same spot in the smoking area by the pool) and they tended to stay for 2-3 cigs because of the restrictions. Made the decks a smoky nightmare that even bothered me.

Keep it up with the Chantix. One day I woke up and didn't even realize I hadn't had a smoke till late in the afternoon. That is when I knew I was quitting. Good luck, I will be rooting for you. Jill

As a non smoker, I fully understand the serious health threats posed by this habit. However, I do believe that the other non smokers have totally covered this matter; hence, it would appear appropriate to move on to more productive endeavors. Let us not allow these threads to disintegrate to the level of the dress code threads.

Since when did covering a subject 400 times on CC become anything other than the norm? But I do nominate Jack as the Captain of the X board smoking thread police!
