NCL Sun: What outdoor activities?

Recommended Posts

Does the Sun have:

1) Rock wall? No

2) Mini Golf? A cage with a club

3) Large water slide? No slide

4) Shuffleboard? I think I saw the markings on the deck so probably

Anything else I am missing?

Thanks

The Sun is one of the older ships so has few innovations. There is a netted in sports court and I saw people playing basketball there.

What, you were expecting something like what is on the Jade?

If it says netted basketball court -- that's all there is. Think of it as RETRO-cruising when you had to come up with your own entertainment during the day.

I remember playing deck golf, quoits, and shuffle board on a 15 day crossing form L.A. to Fiji back in the '70s. No onboard entertainment troop, art auction, or trivia.

please tell what this is....

sounds interesting!!

sort of like "safe horsehoes"

here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quoits

and on the Lelani in 1958 crossing to Honolulu, we had "horse racing"....statues of horses that were advanced by random drawing of their numbers something like a Bingo drawing. Absolutely spell-binding!!

I have never been on a ship that did this but my mother won a pewter mug on a ship, I think they were on a cruise to Montevideo, having the winning horse.

We also did a lot of reading, and just plain deck walking. One of the passengers even re-painted the life rings with the ship's name on them. Whatever you could find to occupy yourself.

I was not expecting anything but hoping for some retro mods for outdoor activities like most other cruiselines have done to there older ships. Often times the cruiseline websites do not state everything that is available onboard so I was seeking some first hand knowledge. BTW I don't consider a ship built in 2001 to be that old considering CCL and RCL have ships from the early 90s retrofitted with various outdoor things like big waterslides, waterworks, mini golf, rock walls etc. that vary from ship to ship. I guess NCL has not done these changes. The Oct. TA cruise was the only one that fit my schedule and usage of plane tickets from the US to the UK this year. I don't expect anywhere near the TA cruise experience on the Sun compared to the RCL Jewel of the Seas in April but will try out NCL and the price was super low.

I guess the gym will have to do for physical activity.

Anyways thanks everyone who replied without the undeserved sarcasm.

Yeah like helps me out any. It does not list anything other than the basketball court so I don't know if that is a complete list.

Sadly, that is the complete list, unless you want to count the ping-pong table that was beside the pool bar when I was aboard in 2005.

This is NOT the ship you want to be on if you like active recreation. On our sea day they held a "golf challenge" that involved putting balls into paper cups in the atrium...I am not kidding . Good food and great hospitality though, if that is a priority.

Happy Sails,

Annette

the Sun is due for refurbishment in January so they may add extras then but it is a lot smaller ship than say the Jade anyway so could be limited as to what they can do.We were just on the Sun for a Baltic trip so with plenty of ports to visit weren't struggling to find anything to do -not sure about a TA though!

Besides the gym, there's long quick walks on the promenade deck, and

swimming laps in the pool.

Keep in mind that the Sun is a smaller ship than others that have been retrofitted with rock walls and water slides. There's not really room for such items. The Sun will be in drydock in January but I don't think they plan on adding things like that to it because of its smaller size.

Since you'll be on the 10/4 transatlantic, come join our very active Roll Call http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=25732924#post25732924

We also have our own webpage (see link in my signature) with a list of the activities planned that you can sign up for: Meet & Greet, Slot Pull, Group lunch, Gift Exchange, Cabin Crawl.

And there are links on our group's webpage to info about our two port stops. Also, if you will be in Dover the night before the cruise, some of the group is getting together for dinner in Dover. The information is on the web page.

Some members have also added their photo to the photo page at our group's webpage.

Explore the webpage and see what we are doing. You can sign up for as much, or as little, as you wish.

Come join our Roll Call. Some of us have cruised on the Sun before and really like the ship. In 2006 I did 18 days on her from Miami to San Francisco through the Panama Canal.

Sorry about the sarcasm. Just didn't seem like you were making much effort to find out what is on the Sun. I also signed up for the October 4 TA to take advantage of the low price and the second half of a round trip airfare. We also did a TA in April on the Grand Princess. I was fortunate to be in London to watch the London Marathon, which motivated me to get back into marathoning. This cruise is right in the middle of my training for a marathon in December, so I was also interested in what I could do to maintain my training. The good news is that the Sun has a Promenade Deck that somewhat supports running. From the NCL website - "Run circles around the other guests or get your daily walk in before breakfast on the outdoor track." The Promenade Deck actually has signs designating outside for runners, inside for walkers with direction arrows. The downside is the Promenade Deck is only open for runners after 8:00 AM, as well as the treadmills in the Fitness Center.

My experience on two previous TAs is that there won't be a whole lot of very active people on board, at least not the kind who would be attracted to rock climbing and water slides. There will be a high percentage of people who are elderly, because generally they are the ones who can take a 12-15 day TA in April or October.

Hope this helps, again sorry about any sarcasm, and I would also suggest you might take a look at the Roll Call. Some of the members have put a lot of effort in to the website.
