Eve Posted September 9, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Heading to Alaska next week and have a question. Will a very nice pair of black denim pants, coupled with a fancy top and moderate heels pass muster on formal night? I've been on other Alaskan cruises and the dress code is somewhat more casual. Looking for some input on this. Thanks~
Donder1 Posted September 9, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I think that even nice denim is too casual. Silk pants would be a better choice and an easy packable item.
taxmantoo Posted September 9, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2010 HAL's dress code does not change according to the itinerary. It's enforcement by HAL staff may vary, but that is an entirely different subject.
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2010 If you don't have a nice pair of slacks -- get a pair -- one pair of slacks -- 2 nice fancy tops -- you are set to go. Also remember that silk or linen dress slacks take up less room in a suitcase than denim does -- not as bulky. And as said -- HAL has the same dress code no matter what the itinerary is. Silk and linen weigh less, too.

Looking for some input on this. Thanks~ The dress code is exactly the same on any HAL itinerary - - Alaska cruises do tend towards being more casual, but that doesn't mean that denim of any color on Formal Night is appropriate. luvs2travl Posted September 9, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2010 ITA with all the above posters. Having made four cruises to Alaska, denim (IMHO) would be inappropriate for formal evenings. A nice pair of black dress pants and a couple of dressy tops would be acceptable, and lightweight dressy pants weigh much less than denim. Have a great cruise! :)
Jacqueline Posted September 10, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 10, 2010 I have just convinced myself that "jeggings" with appropriate accessorizing will be ok on smart casual...
adkkev Posted September 10, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 10, 2010 this thread was about a dress code for Alaska ... which would be Carhartts, 24/7. But alas, it's about formal nights on a HAL cruise. Perhaps sequined Carhartts would pass muster, but then again, maybe not.
Rare JamesEM Posted September 10, 2010 #10 Share Posted September 10, 2010 On my AK cruise this May, dress was very casual for Holland, lots of jeans on nonformal nights.
