dlabout Posted September 9, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Some of my fondest memories of cruising was being able to feed my sweet tooth with cheese cake at dinner. I'm not sure about the rest of you but when I think of cheese cake I assume it involves, oh I don't know, CREAM CHEESE!!! I realize in these tough times we all have to tighten up our belts but for the love of all things holly not the cheese cake!! The all to typical jello mystery cheese cake at most of the dinners and at the WJ are an insult to the cheese cake name. I say we rise up!! YES!! and DEMAND that cheese be involved in our cheese cake!! Or at the very least stop calling it cheese cake. Maybe squishy jello-ish kinda sweet mystery cake would be better. (I know, too long of a name).

wgraves Posted September 9, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2010 Could be wrong, but isn't cheesecake on the Chops menu? Surely, the cheesecake in there is the real deal...
i'llbesea-ingyou Posted September 9, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I understand all you lovers of the cream-cheese-type cheesecakes but have to tell you that I make a seriously mean one without using cream cheese and instead, use ricotta cheese. It is lighter and airer and yummier (IMHO) but would totally understand the complete and utter disappointment of a Jello-type one. Yuck!
luvscruising2007 Posted September 9, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I agree with you. Cheese cake should have cream cheese in it. I think this is just one example of where RC could improve their desserts. Their desserts were not the rich, flavorful treats that I want when I am on vacation and cheating on my diet. sjcruiser Posted September 9, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I thought it was just me. The cheesecake on RCI and Carnival does remind me of some type of Jello. The could use cream cheese, ricotta or marscapone cheese! Yum Yum Yum!!!
dixieva Posted September 9, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I know what you mean. On every cruise I threaten to bring a huge bottle of vanilla extract-the real thing!, and some real sugar to take into the kitchen on board. I don't think the chefs on board have ever heard of these two essential ingredients to a good dessert. I love good cheesecake but never get it on a ship. The best dessert for me on board is the key lime pie. Now that's always great.
jorapp Posted September 9, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 9, 2010 This was my primary complaint on our last cruise. Unless I had fresh fruit or ice cream for dessert, I was hard pressed to identify ingredients in any dessert...except for food coloring and sugar. Those artificially whipped/fluffy creations which would remain elevated for two hours on the buffet in the caribbean heat were nothing I call food. I declined to eat them. On the up side, I didn't gain any weight. lol

beachlovergirl Posted September 9, 2010 #11 Share Posted September 9, 2010 RCI uses that gelatin substance in a lot of their desserts......gross. They used to have good desserts.....:(
workingboy Posted September 9, 2010 #12 Share Posted September 9, 2010 I totally agree. The desserts, especially in the Windjammer have decreased in quality over the last couple of years. They used to have great cheesecake, but no more.
dlabout Posted September 10, 2010 Author #13 Share Posted September 10, 2010 those jello things are so stiff I don't know if I should use it for a floatation device or take it down to the ice rink for hocky practice. -Doug
sandinmypants Posted September 10, 2010 #14 Share Posted September 10, 2010 It's a cost-saving issue - if the desserts were good, they would have to serve a BUNCH of them! :D The A/I we go to is the same way, that puffed-up stuff they try to pass off as cheesecake......blech. dlabout Posted September 10, 2010 Author #15 Share Posted September 10, 2010 If they have a soda package can we get a Cheese cake package??? I want to be a diamond plus cheese cake cruiser. Consume 25+ cheese cakes in a single cruise!!! LOL.
tuffy0317 Posted September 10, 2010 #16 Share Posted September 10, 2010 Actually, we had decent cheesecake (carmel swirl, I think?) in the MDR this past cruise on Enchantment. What was really disappointing was the key lime pie. But I'm a Florida girl, so I may be biased :)
CruiseKeeper Posted September 10, 2010 #17 Share Posted September 10, 2010 RCI uses that gelatin substance in a lot of their desserts......gross. They used to have good desserts.....:( Substance? I've called it goo in the past. I gotta give them this though, they still make a nice ricotta pie and serve it in the WJ sometimes at dinner. There's none of that mystery gelatin substance in it. :)
wgraves Posted September 10, 2010 #18 Share Posted September 10, 2010 Desserts are just hit or miss. Something I always look forward to are the warm scones in the Windjammer mid-afternoon.. Mmmm.
Nekochan Posted September 10, 2010 #19 Share Posted September 10, 2010 I almost never indulge in the desserts on a cruise - too dissapointing (except for carnival's warm chocolate cake). However, I just assume that each pina colada/bahama mama/mai tai equals one dessert in calories, and since I'm watching my weight, not having dessert justifies an extra drink each day. I like your thinking! If I recall, but I've been usuing Nekochan's philosophy about froo-froo drinks, I am not certain, but I believe there was real cheese cake in the WJ one night along with ricotta pie a couple of nights. Their desserts were not the rich, flavorful treats that I want when I am on vacation and cheating on my diet. 1st time cruiser and will be on the Oasis, .... a serious cake/dessert lover. I will be truly disappointed, how awful :(:( RCI, if you're reading, please, please improve your desserts, before Feb 2011 please and thanks!! :D

(I know, too long of a name). Yes I love cheese cake too. I make it at home. It is very expensive to make. That is prob why we dont see good cheese cake onboard. Even when the economy was not in trouble... good cheese cake on a cruise ship was a rare find! I agree with you... RCI should call it "MOCK CHEESE FOOD CAKE" or "PRETEND CHEESE CAKE" LOL
