HALFans Posted September 17, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2010 We did the September 4th Alaskan Explorer R/T Seattle on the Rotterdam. Just thought I'd note a few things while I work on a review... 1) There were NO GOLDFISH at the bars. Only the assorted dry-roasted (good) nuts. :D 2) Unlike our last 2 Ryndam cruises, there was no garbage stench in the hallway by the Explorers Lounge. Missed that for about 1/2 a second. ;) 3) Screechy has left the HalCats. In fact, even the rest of the HalCats were gone. The Ocean Bar has a new group with a male vocalist. What a change! 4) Darn it, there was no one to feel like I wanted to 'Boo' at the new Showroom at Sea. The new entertainers can all sing their parts, the orchestra plays in tune, and the quality of shipboard entertainers has gone up all across the board. Kind of miss the glitzy Bob Mackie costumes, but glad they're spending the money on talent instead! 5) I know it's silly but I was delighted to see the HAL Logo napkins, chocolates and swizzle sticks that I missed on our last cruise. That lets me know that Holland America is as proud of that ship as I was happy to be on her. Great cruise, wonderful ship, fantastic Cruise Director (Anthony Choice?) and ever-friendly crew and staff. That's it for now. Review to follow. aliaschief Posted September 17, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 17, 2010 Glad you had a great cruise. Great to hear that shows are better and there is a vocalist in the Ocean Bar. Personally, I haved missed the Filipino bands. No Goldfish, no problem. Did they offer any jalepeno stuffed peppers! Love them!:D
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 17, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 17, 2010 Welcome Home!! Glad you had a great cruise!! WHAT -- no Gold Fish!! That would be a plus for us -- we are tired of them. Dry Roasted Peanuts??(Don't like them.) Those are not the GOOD NUTS!! Will be curious what we have on our next cruise.
sail7seas Posted September 17, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2010 :) Our recent Maasdam we had Logo bar napkins, swizzle sticks with Logo, good nuts as well as dry roasted and goldfish. Ship seems to have been well supplied. ;) ....and they offered jalepeno poppers as well. :)
cruisinjudy Posted September 17, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2010 Oh I wonder how long Anthony Choice will be on Rotterdam. We had him on Zaandam in March and he was great. We will be on Rotterdam in January. Maybe he will have his vacation and return to Rotterdam by then.

Krazy Kruizers Posted September 17, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2010 So Let's See!! I am trying to think when the last time we had GOOD Mixed Nuts!! AH -- yes -- in our Penthouse on the Westerdam in 2009. Not in any lounges or bars on any other ships.
aliaschief Posted September 17, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 17, 2010 We have had the good nuts on our last three cruises but only on formal nights.

Tailskid Posted September 18, 2010 #12 Share Posted September 18, 2010 Interesting - would love to see your full (detailed) review. Am doing the Rotterdam for the first time in November (Pacific Islands cruise) and 30 nights with more than half of those at sea frightens me a bit...would hate to have to tollerate all that time without goldfish! Had Goldfish and logo bar items earlier this year on the Oosterdam. Will miss them next year if they are not avail. since I like them in the afternoon with my Napcap. Usually go for a snooze around 4:00. Thank heaven no Halcats. I too still miss the Rosario Strings. They were classy and seemed to enjoy performing for us.:)
Vic The Parrot Posted September 18, 2010 #15 Share Posted September 18, 2010 3) Screechy has left the HalCats. In fact, even the rest of the HalCats were gone. "Screechy" is on board Veendam. A shame you missed her ... :D
Vogie Posted September 19, 2010 #16 Share Posted September 19, 2010 Thanks for the great review. I think we were in the Crow's Nest with you and traded our answers for trivia? Anyway, we felt the same about the cruise, it was terrific. This was our friends and ours first time cruising with HAL and we loved it! The boat was beautiful and a nice size. Food was great, enterainment was first rate and in spite of one rough sea night and sea sickness we will definitely cruise with HAL again! Crazy Gramps Posted September 19, 2010 #17 Share Posted September 19, 2010 Last cruise we had to ASK for nuts. I can remember when, the before dinner bars, had hot munchies for everybody. Gramps
sail7seas Posted September 19, 2010 #18 Share Posted September 19, 2010 There were hot munchies at Ocean Bar every night of our recent cruises. Some of the familiar ones we've had for years and a few new choices.
Rare Copper10-8 Posted September 19, 2010 #19 Share Posted September 19, 2010 Word has it, no more 'Good Nuts' in the dam bars! HAL has switched to 'Good Prunes!'
GmaPajama Posted September 19, 2010 #20 Share Posted September 19, 2010 Strange, those silly Goldfish. On a ship, they really hit the spot. I buy them at home and they sit around till they're stale. Must be the atmosphere - Get me on a ship! :)

m steve Posted September 19, 2010 #23 Share Posted September 19, 2010 I thought they were for kids. I guess my tastes for bar snacks are more sophisticated. We like unsalted roasted nuts, no peanuts, served warm when possible.
