E-500 Posted October 3, 2010 #176 Share Posted October 3, 2010 I don't know how to set up a poll --but think one would be fun for this! Do you think: A) The OP found the missing passport at the last minute? or B) Somehow was able to obtain a New and/or Duplicate Passport at the last minute ? I vote 'A'. If we were not being punked (I don't think we were) and she really is in Africa she had to have found it.

I think if she found it, she would have told us that. I think the full, long story will be coming upon her return.
Taxguy77 Posted October 3, 2010 #178 Share Posted October 3, 2010 Did anyone who have been following this thread not go look for their passports last night or today? I think most of us probably wanted to be sure where ours are. I didn't!:D DW went to lunch with a friend and checks that my passport is there with hers both going and when she returns.
Taxguy77 Posted October 3, 2010 #179 Share Posted October 3, 2010 I don't want to take this too far off topic, but how common/easy/difficult to "visit" a ship in port? Used to be common, now quite rare.

I don't recall reading that the OP was going on a cruise. Her signature shows a cruise later in the fall.
NoWhiners Posted October 3, 2010 #182 Share Posted October 3, 2010 I MADE IT....I am currently in Wamatu, Kenya right on the Indian Ocean. Internet access is not good so I will update you with the details when we return. There are lessons to be learned. Thank you to everyone. What a great group we have!!!!!! WOW--if you had told me 2 days ago you would make it, i would have bet a lot you wouldn't!! Not wishing bad things on you but it was so close to your departure and when the government "helps", well, let's just say that things go slower than we hope. I am so happy to hear you made it and i can't wait to hear how you did it! You may not read this until your return, so i hope you had a great trip. If you are reading it on your trip--quick, go to the nearest casino and make a big bet!! have a great time and RELAX--you made it!! ML

peaches from georgia Posted October 3, 2010 #185 Share Posted October 3, 2010 I don't think she found it for if she had she would have been home and I'm sure would have posted "I found it!". She posted at 6:45 a.m. that she had not found it and her plan, as you say, was to head to the Congressman's office. I agree that she did not find it. Otherwise her email from Kenya would have simply stated that she found the passport and made. It is more complicated than that in my mind.

It is more complicated than that in my mind. i think it is more likely they got to the passport office in their connecting city - detroit - and made a later flight. i highly doubt a congressman has blank passports sitting around the office waiting to hand out. the US passport is the gold-standard of personal identification because it is not easily obtained. hopefully we will get the rest of their story. then their misfortune can benefit others. navybankerteacher Posted October 3, 2010 #188 Share Posted October 3, 2010 I hope it is a true story with a happy ending, but the skeptic in me can't help wondering why OP was spending so much time online and posting the evening of Sept. 29 when the time might have been much better spent actually looking for the passport. Too bad the "happy ending" report didn't include the logically indicated explanation -- why just check in from Kenya - and not give "the rest of the story"? Anyone else curious? She said internet connections where she was were not the best. I think the story had a lot of details and she didn't have time to type it all up. However, I do agree a one-liner that she got her passport from ......... would have been nice. However, she had a very stressful few days I am sure and it was just nice of her to check in. "Scam" posts are typically from people who join the forum, make their one time post and we never hear back. This poster has a history on CC, which is why I do not believe it was a scam post to see how much of a reaction she could get. I think it is all legit. If not, oh well!! tomc Posted October 3, 2010 #192 Share Posted October 3, 2010 She really didn't spend that much time online and, no, there would not have been any time for a scam. btw: The latest thing going around is "I'm stuck in London, someone stole my wallet/purse with my credit cards and $$. Send me some money." It's signed by a friend. Someone has invaded the friend's e-mail address list. I got one of those from someone who I know is in the States. Some of us using internet connections abroad have often found erratic keyboard configurations, painfully slow connections, extraordinary lag time between key stroke and message appearance on the monitor and sticky keys, all leading to an overwhelming frustration tapping out even the simplest message. Plausible explanation for abbreviated message.

Recently my neice was traveling in Thailand and had her passport, money and credit cards stolen. When I got the email asking for help, I naturally thought of this latest scam. Making it harder, she had spotty access to internet, time difference, etc. etc. After a few emails back and forth and some trick questions I asked her, we did know it was in fact my neice. But you just can't be too careful these days. It took weeks for her to get a replacement, and she did have a copy with her. It was a nightmare for all involved. Not only does she have a history but that recent history was fully consistent with her story in this thread. Hoax crossed my mind, but it would have to have been one planned and executed over a substantial period of time and that did not seem reasonable she would take so much time planning a hoax that would not benefit her. OP posted three or more times that evening at hour or more intervals - - either being on line all that time, or else logging on at least three separate times -- it just is not how I would spend my time if I were desperately looking for something. That, plus surprising lack of explanation in the last post gives me pause to wonder.
vbmom87 Posted October 3, 2010 #197 Share Posted October 3, 2010 OP posted three or more times that evening at hour or more intervals - - either being on line all that time, or else logging on at least three separate times -- it just is not how I would spend my time if I were desperately looking for something. She was looking for ideas as to what to do to get a passport before her trip, at least that is the way I look at. She kept coming back hoping someone had an idea for her. In general I am quite the sceptic myself and I admit it crossed my mind, until I took a look at her history here on CC. After that I felt this was most likely a legitimate post. In my observations on this forum the ones who post scam posts, never come back. They simply post their crazy question and then sit back and laugh at all those who respond. I don't see that as the case here. JMHO.
sail7seas Posted October 3, 2010 #198 Share Posted October 3, 2010 What's the difference either way? IMO, this thread served a usefuly purpose, hoax or not. It was a good reminder to all of us to pay attention when storing our passports and not wait until last minute before traveling to be sure we have them accessible. If OP comes back and tells the rest of the story, that will be great. If not, we all learned a lesson so not nearly the wasted thread that some others have been. IMO...... Agreed - it's a good reminder. And, I suppose I tend to think too much about the curious aspects of things I read. But thinking about such curious aspects (even if speculations may prove incorrect) is never a waste of time. Reading all these posts without thinking would be a waste of time. IRL_Joanie Posted October 3, 2010 #200 Share Posted October 3, 2010 How many times have we all lost something in plain sight? How many times have we searched and searched until we are either in tears, tearing our hair out or ready to kick something in from the pure frustration of not being able to find what we are looking for???? I feel the OP was desperate for ideas on what to do. I feel that instead of yelling at her family and or becoming violent out of sheer desperation, the OP came to us for ideas of what to do. I also feel that the OP taking the time to sit at the computer was a time to calm down in order to renew the search for the lost passport. I do that quite often when I need to refocus. I am on cable and I NEVER log out of CC. I am logged on even when my computer is turned off. You cannot go by the On/Off Line staus. I feel the OP was able to get assistance somehow from her Senator or Congressman and was able to get either her/his flight out or the next one out. I also feel that since the OP's last post was a 1 liner from Kenya, that they are on the first part of their vacation and will get back to us as soon as possible. I do not believe that this was a hoax as; a. The OP never asked for money. b. The OP has been on CC for a while. c. I believe the OP. I mean, look at it this way, how many of us jumped to help Jimmy T last night when he posted about needing to reach his parents on the Nieuw Amsterdam because of his daughter. Jimmy T (cannot remember his CC Name) has been a member of CC since 2008, but last night was his first post. Was that a hoax?? I do not believe so, nor do I believe Matondo is playing one either.
