royal loose thousands of dollars on explorer ots

Recommended Posts

I think they lost quite a lot more than that.

They lost the on-board spending such as drinks, casino, pictures, excursions, drinks and more drinks.

If we can guess an average of $50 per person per day ( some drink more some less :D ) RCCL lost $350,000 and their staff lost over $68,000 in tips.

I wouldn't assume the things you mentioned are not included in their insurance.

UKSIMONUSAIf the Brits spend so much onboard in the bars, why did RCI have to drop the prices on Indy to get the high spending brits to spend??

I dont know if you mean the prices in the bar or for the cruise but its cheaper for us to fly to NY or Miami and do a 12/14 night caribbean cruise than it is for us to do a 14 night cruise from southampton on the indy and yes I do spend a lot in the bars and I tip:D

Royal caribbean lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as 700 UK passengers missed the 12.19.10 sailing out of new york. This was due to the heavy snowfall in the uk on the 18th of december.Food was already on board which had to be thrown away.people rang rci to say they would be late but royal would not hold the ship a few hours, for a few people .It turned out to be 700.It was made worse being a 2 week xmas and new year cruise to the caribbean, where they need to fill the ship.it ended up 75% full and rci had to give full refunds to uk passengers.

Thank you for starting this thread a month after the fact.

Apparently, the OP expected the ship to wait a month until MIL boarded.

I'm still waiting to hear from the OP what amount of time the ship was expected to wait. Were you expecting the ship to stay in NY until everyone got on board? That would have potentially meant 4 or 5 lost days for the other 3000 passengers.

Please respond to the repeated question: How long was reasonable to wait under the circumstances?

MM......it's a slow day at CC. Most of the other posts were about cruise points, and the good and bad of it.:D

Aquahound has the knowledge of how much it costs to hold a ship in a U.S. port. Leaving just one and a half hours later costs the company a great deal of money, according to many captains that I have chatted with.;)

Those that missed it may count themselves lucky in a way, as I heard from crew and reviewers that there were many unruly children, teens and adults on this 2 wk cruise. Many damaged areas. We followed that cruise on Jan 2, and yes EOS lost money not just on that one but on ours as well. (Direct from the finance/marketing manager). Also we ran out of some supplies on our cruise and had to take on food at some of the ports of call. Most meats and fish are taken on board frozen, that I didn't know until we took a tour of kitchen and spoke to finance/marketing manager at luncheon. Loses on longer cruises is due to passagengers having limited budget for trip be it a 7 day or 14 day, and they don't spend over that budget. In fact we spent less on our 14 day for the 4 of us this trip as well. Our trip was great by the way.

I have seen many posts about the reimbursement for missed, interrupted, canceled cruises as well as more posts about how differently European cruisers are treated.

The approach Europe has to consumer protection is quite different from the US. But it has its costs.

I have no idea if the difference in cost is only due to exchange rates, but there is definitely a stricter rule about booking and cancellation penalties. I suspect that is in some part due to how much more generous the refunds must be in case of problems that are no more the cruiseline's fault than the passengers. The Iceland volcano situation comes to mind.

I have no idea how much money the cruiselines make each year from keeping the deposits on canceled cruises, but I bet it goes a good way towards covering the refunds their insurance policies don't cover (or maybe it just pays the premiums for those policies).

They didnt miss anything the food was horrible anyway. In Dominica they brought 40 kids on the ship and fed them.

What a ridiculous comment that has nothing to do with this thread.

If you consider the food on the ship horrible, please invite me to yuor home so that I can taste GREAT food. :D

Its the winter cruises that dropped in price.

I did one of the cheap cruises. 11 nights and only 2 warmish days.

Doesn't bother me but for those sun worshipers its not a good pay off. Easier to fly to the sunshine.

Plus the Bay of Biscay is pretty rough and lots of cruisers don't like it (I loved it).

The drinks prices are also more than double P&O's prices. Royal Caribbean want to get those cruisers but its a massive price shock to them. Our cruise removed auto-tip on drinks completely (not sure if thats normal because I am an NCL cruiser usually and they have auto-tip for drinks).

Some of those Brits who couldn't get to the US, were 'rehoused' on the Indie - we were on the Indie and there were spare cabins, so some cruisers transferred. We have cruised many times in the Caribbean with few Brits on board and many of the US cruisers dodge tipping - not just the Brits!!! Don't know where you all get this idea from? We generally tip 10-12% and not the US 15-20%. But then your servers in the US receive very little in salary. Also, many of the agents in the UK include tips in the price.

Gunther and Uta - we live in Spain in the winter - on the Costa del Crime. Nr. Estepona - anywhere near you guys?

As has already been said as British cruisers we pre-pay our gratuities and have done for many years. If nothing else it saves converting sterling to dollars, we can just pay in the UK.

The onboard prices have not been lowered on Independence of the seas, in fact bar prices have been raised by 15% and the 15% service charge removed - can you see what they did there :) Culturally we are not used to paying a service charge in bars, only restaurants, so it was seen as a sensible thing to do.

Also as BMT said there were a number of people who came onboard last minute because they couldn't get out to the US for either a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise, so there was some damage limitation.

As for cheap winter cruises that is the case all round the globe. I think I'm right in saying the cruise straight after the new year is one of the cheapest cruises you can ever book on to. Certainly flights hit rock bottom once everyone is back at work or school after the New Year.

Henry :)

I remember following a wonderful Alaska cruise on the Radiance..a couple complaining because they missed embarkation and they didn't hold the ship (24 hours, by the way). They were flying from Ft. Lauderdale to pickup the Radiance in Seward, Alaska....same day. On Delta, they got as far as Atlanta when they missed their first connection. (They were first-time cruisers and I actually blame this on their travel agent. Not the flight, please read below)

I'll repeat what I used to say to my cruise guests in my travel agent days. The last thing you want to see is the back end of your ship as it sails away.

I always, strongly, suggested a hotel room the night before a cruise. It will, at least, give you a fighting chance to fix a problem if one arose like delayed luggage, for example.

We are sailing on the Explorer in December and live a 3 1/2 hour drive away.....and we will be staying in a hotel the night before. $98 is little to pay for peace of mind.

Coming from Europe for a cruise in the US in the travel world now a days......hotel the night ahead is a no brainer! (just my opinion)
