Dreaming...New Build, what do you want?

Voyager Class - 138,000 tons - 3114 passengers

Radiance Class - 90,000 tons - 2501 passengers

My preferred is: Celebrity Solstice Class - 122,000 tons - 2850 passengers

I loved all the passenger space on the Solstice with more lounges and 2 levels of shopping. I would also like to see cabins for singles and a bigger, better movie theater. I really liked the central entertainment lobby on the Solstice with different venues feeding off of it.

Sorry but I don't care about the inside promenade. I like all the glass on Radiance where I view the ocean and the light.

My dream ship would be under 1500 pax -- preferably 900.

Unfortunately, such is economically unfeasible these days ... which is why cruise lines are either selling their smaller ships, or redeploying them to ports such as the South Pacific. There are smaller ships sailing ... but cruises are expensive. It's just a sign of both the times we live in, and the metamorphosis of the mass-market cruise industry.

Lots of glass like the Radiance class ships would be great.

Radiance class is perfect combination of size and amentities. We've cruised on Solstice and felt it too was a very manageable size.

The lines can argue economics as much as they'd like, but they are alienating a good share of their customers by this movement toward megaships with all sorts of pretty much worthless bells and whistles.

I also question some of these amusments. They take up costly space, cost mega-bucks to build and maintain (and to insure!), generally cannot accomodate crowds, and their novelty is short-lived.

Well-put! Our comfort level is pretty much the same ... sailed just about everything out there, save for the monsters, which we have no desire to try. We found the Freedom class a bit too much, especially when being jostled around trying to get a decent view of the parade and other activities in the promenade. We're fine with Voyager- and Radiance-class ships ... something between them would very much interest us.

I'd like to see rooms that are both bigger and smaller than standard cabins. Back when cruising was for the newly wed and nearly dead, it made sense to have rooms that fit just two people. But with the steady increase in families, and single travelers, there needs to be a lot more rooms for these folks.

The family rooms wouldn't necessarily have to be as big as a Royal Family Suite; something more akin to the existing Family Staterooms (with the second "bedroom" being more like a walk-in closet) would do. This way, there'd still be at least some privacy available. They should have a half-bath (toilet and sink) in addition to the full bath. I think that families would be more prone to rent these rooms, instead of going for two separate rooms. They could be priced at about 1-1/2 times the cost of two separate staterooms (assuming double occupancy in each), to make it financially worthwhile.

The single rooms, of course, would be a lot smaller. Though it omits the half-bath, I still really liked the idea that another poster had on another thread regarding how to incorporate family cabins and single cabins (Post #11):

A Ships that aren't ridiculously big.

Staterooms that fit 4-6 without the price tag of a "Royal Family Suite". There should be at least a whole half of a deck filled with these types of cabins considering how many people sail with families.

And can we possibly get a new ship on Southern Caribbean route? Out of the last 4 new ships built, all of them basically do the same itineraries.

The FlowRiders are such a big attraction on the Freedom and Oasis Class ships, any new ship has to have a FlowRider. Two FlowRiders on the Oasis was a great addition. Just like the rock wall, the Flowrider must stay a signature feature of RCCL ships.

I've sailed the Solstice and loved it. On a new ship that would attract me I would love more emphasis on the cabins. Balconies that are large enough for a lounger and table for 2 so you can eat out there would be great. More electrical outlets, enough space so you don't have to dance around each other to get past the bed, a little thought to the placement of the closets so the doors open without hitting the bed or couch....

I do not need or want a flowrider, rockwall, or basketball court, but realize that having them pulll a crowd to that area, freeing up more deck space for me, so I'm ok if they are there!

I'd also appreciate more varied evening venues. We loved the Molecular Bar on Solstice (but of course if was more attractive because it was included in the alcohol package we were able to buy from X, so might not spend as much time there if RCCL doesn't offer something similar!)

A Lazy River!!

Wouldn't it be great to grab a tube and float around the edge of the ship with only a plexiglass wall keeping you from being one with the ocean. :D

BonVoyage

Dawna

That would be great. Did you ever see that concept cruise video by Carnival on their extreme megaship came out a few years ago? It has one but not exactly like that. I actually found the concept video on youtube. Check it out.

Dream BIG!!! :D

Catamaran design - Two hulls (Vaka), each the length and height of two Oasis class (so four Oasis in all) with a bridging deck (Aka) roughly half a mile across and 10 decks tall. On top is STOL airfield, nine hole Par 3 golf course, multiple pools & waterpark, running track, etc... You can do a lot with 130 acres. Power agumented by wind, solar electricity cracking seawater (plus Biomass composting) for hydrogen to be stored and used in fuel cells to drive 12 azipods (three rear and three forward on each hull). Central platform interior is entertainment zone (theaters, restaurants, casinos, skating rinks, etc...). Edges of platform containing suites and possible time share apartments. Passenger capacity 35,000 but so large as to not be any more crowded than typical small city. Crew of 15,000. Obviously this is a tender only operation but tenders can be Radiance class size. Port stops would be week long so two types of "sailing" - port stay like a hotel and "at sea" between ports. Like "The World" by ResidenSea but WAY WAY bigger!

$30 Billion ought to do it.

Tenders the size of Radiance ships!!! :)

I like the suggestions of more smaller ships.

oh my god, I posted this video on the Carnival forum, alot of kids over there. They immediately start bashing RCCL and say that concept ship is really dumb and no one wants those "gimmicks" and just go on a torrent against RCCL. Very pricky over there. How can anyone be against more options then just a basketball court and a swimming pool? People who bash more options are still a mystery to me.

Get rid of those dreadful shopping centre ships and bring back Radiance :)

Outdoor eating, lots of glass, sea views at every turn and fabulous aft balconies :p I can't think of one single thing I'd change about Radiance - or perhaps I could ... an ice rink maybe?

Slightly OT but it would be great if RCI would introduce the following fleet wide...

Balcony cabins for singles without the double occupancy supplement.

Larger balcony cabins for larger families without the suite price tag.

And a reduced rate for babies.

I think it is more the Loyal to Carnival than anything...Just like the loyal to royal. People dont like change to their product that they have grown fond of .But I guess Im in the minority since I just made Platinum on my 3rd cruise line

I started cruising with Carnival years ago but currently Im exploring the ships of Royal.

I like the Ideas that both companies come up with and they both have there place in cruising. I think they take design ideas from each other

And I think it was the shopping carts of Princess that helped Royal with the idea of the Aqua theater and the open boardwalk they have on Oasis/Allure

It's one thing to give an opinion but another to pass things off as "facts" which is what some are doing on that thread. There are people that come to the boards to learn about cruising and cruise lines. Most of what was posted is pure garbage. You be the judge.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1348604

I also agree that the cruise lines take ideas from one another but Carnival is clearly the one taking the ideas and not giving . RCI is clearly the innovator when it comes to ships. They are the first for many. About the only thing that I can think of that came from another cruise line first was MUTS and that title goes to Princess. I also see no relation to the Princess shopping cart handle and RCI's Aqua Theater. Not even close.

Retractable dome over main pool not just Solarium -- so you can sail from Bayonne in January and enjoy the pool the instant you're on board rather than waiting 1-2 days. The adults can still have their Solarium...and the younger groups still have a pool to use too. Seriously, the first line who has winter sailings from NY to do this will have a competitive advantage among knowledgeable cruisers in the market!

I like the ideas re: mixing Radiance-class glass with the Royal Promenade too.

With the rebuilding program announced making more ships feel like the Oasis Class (caliber of entertainment, DreamWorks, etc.), I wonder what Oasis features will make it over to smaller ships and become new standards. I really hope they transfer the Oasis-class' design elements that s p r e a d o u t the passengers desiring a similar thing among many different venues at a given time, rather than creating crowds in any one location.
