Staying later on ship due to later flight

Recommended Posts

You won't be able to stay onboard much past 10 a.m...they need to clear the ship in order to prepare for the next boarding..you also will need to be out of your cabin by 8 am...so no real place to relax & wait onboard either...

We've done it, in Barcelona last October. Our flight didn't leave until about 5pm, so we stayed on the boat until about 2pm.

It cost extra, but it saved us hanging around in the airport for hours! We were able to go in the hot tubs (for ages ), and get food and drinks as per normal. We were able to use the showers in the spa, as you leave your stateroom in the same way as normal. It was a bit strange being on the boat so late, as it was really quiet - far more so than you'd have if you stayed on board on a normal port day when most others get off. It was also a bit strange going to the baggage reclaim, and having a huge hall, with only our bags in, so we think we were probably the very last to leave to boat.

The only potential downside is that normally when you depart there are plenty of taxis there, but leaving it so late, the car park was virtually empty. Luckily a taxi arrived at just the right time for us.

royal Caribbean does not offer late departures from the ships on Caribbean based cruises like they do for European based cruises. You will need to be off the ship no later than 10am with everyone else.

We have the same situation. Our flight leaves at 6:40pm. We plan on renting a car for the day, but I would like to at least have a leisurely breakfast on debarkation day. How do you let them know that you would like the latest available departure time? I don't want to get stuck with a 7:30am departure time with others that are trying to catch a shuttle. Thanks.

when you do your on-line check-in to print your Set Sail pass, you have to tell them when your flight leaves. So they will know you have a late flight and will assign you the appropriate color or tag number. Your departure info sheet will tell you approximately what time your tag may be called, if you want to go sooner, go to Guest Services and get a different color or number.

Even if they give you an earlier departure time, you can certainly ignore the number call and just keep eating at the buffet. They're pickier about people trying to leave early with later numbers: if you're Number 38, I don't think they care if you leave immediately when they call Number 38. But, as pointed out, it's only delaying the inevitable by a few minutes. They want you out of the cabin ASAP. Let's say you leave the cabin at 8:00am. Even if you sat at the buffet until 9:00am, you're still going to be off the ship by 9:30am-10:00am with a lot of time to kill. You'd actually be better off with a later flight, which would make it worth your while to rent a car and go do something for a few hours (even as mundane as play the slots at the Hard Rock Casino). Leaving the ship at 10:00am with a flight at 3:00pm puts you in the "donut hole" of time where you're probably just going to end up sitting around the airport for 4 hours using WiFi...

Check out excursion options for Ft. Lauderdale. You can usually take a tour that ends up at the airport. Your luggage travels with you and it beats sitting around FLL.

That's a great idea. My parents live near FLL so I never thought of that option, as we just park at the terminal. But, yeah, if you have a later flight I think that might be the best way to go. Your luggage goes with you, it kills a few hours, and it beats sitting in the airport.

Subtract the cost of taxi or other transportation to FLL from the excursion cost also!

They do it by a number system 1-28. 28 is the last called (9:30-10 am). Breakfast is over by 9:30 and they close it at that time.

Another option is an airport hotel with a dayroom. Go there and relax until 12:30 or so then go on shuttle to airport. If you are flying in US only do the thing where they take your bags to the airport for you. Less trouble.

We did this 2 years ago and it was far more relaxing, especially as our flight to the UK wasn't leaving until evening. We left the ship around 09:30 and checked in at the hotel 10:30ish. We'll do the same again in October this year.

Our flight leaves out of FL at 3pm.

Quite honestly, 3 pm isn't that late of a flight. I was just reading on here yesterday about a passenger who left the ship at 8:30 am, got to FLL thinking they had a lot of time, and found the lines for check-in and security were unbelievably long. They just made it to the gate in time for their flight.

I know Fort Lauderdale airport is nothing special, but I certainly would rather be waiting there, checked-in and through security, than on an excursion or in a dayroom somewhere, worrying about whether or not we have given ourselves enough time. This airport can be a nightmare, especially with potentially thousands of Oasis and/or Allure passengers checking in after they disembark, plus other ships. Just a thought. :)

EDITED to add: You can go to the Florida Departures board and read other threads about those who have asked about what to do in Fort Lauderdale for a half day; there are others who have asked the same question.

I agree this is a good option, having done it once, but I have also had a departure day excursion cancelled at short notice (on the cruise - and possibly the day before). Just a note of caution that, like other excursions, they will not run if there aren't enough folk signed up, so at least have a 'Plan B' in mind.

We have hung out until we were among the last to leave. A leisurely stroll thru customs and immigration. Getting luggage etc. No crowds. Grabbed a taxi and then at the airport either checked luggage or took it with us to one of the restaurants at FLL and sat and had a nice lunch.

That sounds like a good idea. Where did you go to lunch and how did you arrange to get back to the airport after having your lunch.
