Wentletrap was on Strand, but considered part of the Tremont Hotel.

Had to dress for lunch also:(

Oh I remember! It was a little pricey too. Food was good though. However, you have to cater to the tourists on The Strand. Nobody down there wants to have to dress like that for lunch or dinner.

I worked for Mitchell Energy at the time he and Cynthia started their re-building of Galveston and spent many a day here going through properties and evaluating progress. Same with the development of Pirates Beach and Cove.
I lived in Pirate's Beach for a number of years, and remember George out there pumping gas into his Lincoln at Sasser's store.:)

The Tremont had the Wentletrap restaurant at one time, A project of Cynthia's. Unfortunately it didn't last. Coats for men and skirts for ladies were mandatory:( Today, it is only manadatory to have "dress" flip flops, though the Pelican Club does require men to have jackets (which can be removed once they are seated).
After a Dicken's on the Strand festival, we had dinner there with Charles Dicken's great great grandson. The old rip taught us how to drink a whole lot of Port. "I'll drink to Cardinal Puff for the 5th time!!" Our Rotary Club met on the third floor of the Wentletrap up until it closed. We relocated to the banquet room above Fisherman's Wharf, what a great view of the harbor.

I was a Pelican Club member at Gaido's for a number of years as I ran Southern Union Gas on the island. Much like downtown Dallas or Houston, Galvestonians love business lunches.;) The Yacht Club and Artillery Cub can do some good work as well, part of a different Galveston that the tourists never see.

Mitchell Energy did have some gas wells on the island and of course there were all the development projects. Were you living in Galveston at the time, or out in the Woodlands?

Sugar Land; but Mitchell Energy was downtown at One Shell Plaza prior to moving to the Woodlands. Spent many years downtown then drove to the Woodlands for about a year, but it was a killer and not worth the hours on 2 lane Hwy. 6:eek:

Knew the Mitchel wells -called Galveston Townsites - at one time had a fab photo of a well flaring, but it was lost in some moves.

We also are involved with Dickens, the Queen and entourage. Began giving school presentations several years ago the week of Dickens with the "royal entourage" and a member of the Dickens family as well as visits to Ronald McDonald House and UTMB Pediatric ward. Mark Charles is unable to make the trip due to his profession; Henry Dickens Hawksley is not well (loves martinis), but his daughter, Lucinda now represents the family.

Love the quiet of the Pelican Club and the stuffed dates are to die for:D

I've been out of Dickens and the Pelican Club for some years now. Although we'll visit Dickens in costume on occasion, it's always been a wonderful family event.

What do they stuff the dates with as I'm unfamiliar with them?

So you are bringing the Mariner to Galveston in Oct., and then in Nov. of 12? Will you join her in England or some other port?

The huge Mahjool dates are stuffed with smoked gouda then baked. Yummy!

Now I'm hungry:o

Joining the Mariner in Rome, this year and next. Plan to stay a week in Rome this year, visit Venice and Florence next year.

Tuna and Tini's at Olympia this afternoon before the band concert. Date night for our border collie:D - who meets up with our friends dogs.

Everyone say your final goodbyes to the old thread! It's going poof soon. :( LauraS says will be archived, but we won't be able to see it.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's already gone.

I saved all of the pages from the old thread as a picture on my computer. I'll probably put the pictures/files online sometime soon.

Large Thread Announcement

Apparently the large threads are the reason the forums have been really slow for the past couple of months. (Although I've noticed CC has gotten faster again the past 2 or so weeks.) So they're closing the large threads and starting new ones.

I'm not too happy that it's gone, either. :( However, I was able to save each pages of the old thread as a picture.

I was on the second floor of Fisherman's Wharf today and watched with interest as they are adding about 30 feet or so on to the end of the pier at Terminal 1. It's a little hard to see on the cruise cam, perhaps it's to help accommodate the Magic. They are pouring concrete so it is permanent.

Here's a link to a different kind of cruise ship out of galveston.:)

It looks like Rancher Dave is out of luck however.

Thanks, she is due to graduate September 1 and come back to the Air Force base in San Angelo. The nice cool weather was marvelous. The whole west coast has been clobbered by a very cold spring. There is till snow on top of Mt. Spokane here and I have not seen that during June ever here. They are still skiing over on the west coast of Washington there is still so much snow left in the Cascade Mts.

There is also news that Carnival and Princess will be limiting smoking to balconies on Carnival and Princess will go to no smoking in the room or balconies soon. That will make Carnival like RCI and Princess like Celebrity. Should be good for some good cat fights on the boards. :D

My sympathies to regular posters on those boards. At least we've already evolved beyond most of the worst threads on that particular issue. Of course, it just mutates into something slightly different but....;)

The cattle hauler ship in the picture sure looks small compared to ones I have seen moooving cattle from Australia to other countries in that general region.

Cost to move the cattle from here to Russia is pretty high so they must be working on serious breeding cows that get moved. Of course when they are due to have a calf upon arrival they ultimately get a 2 for 1 head deal so I can see why it makes sense to move pregnant cows/heifers.

It is good to be in my own house this evening. DW got a cold/the flu on the last day in China so had it for the entire flight home, all 9500 miles of it...including an overnight stop in Toronto where we all got only a few hours of sleep.

I am a smoker and just finished two cruises on Celebrity which has no smoking in the cabins or the balcony or in the casino. One was the Eclipse for a week, the other was a B2B for 27 days.

I had no problems dealing with it. I never smoked in the cabin to start with as a courtesy to my non-smoking husband and to whoever has the cabin the next time. Yes, it was a minor inconvenience not being able to duck out on the balcony with a cup of tea in the early morning before getting dressed and at night when we have showered and gotten ready for bed but nothing earth shaking. I don't spend that much time in the casino anyway so it was no great loss either.

One thing I noticed was that the non-smokers were much more considerate to those that were smoking in designating areas. In the past, when smoking in a designated area, you would have people that would be passing through fan their faces, hold their noses, cough excessively, and make remarks about the evils of smoking as if we don't already know. There were some complaints about people smoking in the Observation Lounge which was the only indoor venue available. On a trans-Atlantic and Baltic's cruise, you occasionally had the choice of being blown to bits/freezing outside or shelter inside. It was a small section on one side of the lounge--maybe a dozen tables--and was empty or only occupied by two or three smokers most of the time. During the Elite reception every night when it was the most utilized only eight tables at most were occupied by smokers (and some by non-smokers who preferred the view) and they were right by the window about as far away as you could get from the rest of the lounge. There was always plenty of room on the non-smoking side so no one was forced to be next to the smoking section if they wanted a seat. Those that complained were directing their complaints to the cruise line policy rather than the individuals smoking.

So, personally, I think this is a good move on the cruise lines to try and have an equitable balance between smokers and non-smokers. Smoke free ships just didn't cut it revenue wise which Carnival and Renaissance found out. Note that they will still allow smoking in the casinos because, if anything, that is where non-smoking could impact the bottom line the most. I appeared to me that the casinos on both ships didn't seem as crowded as those on the ships that allowed smoking. Whether the no-smoking policy fed into that, I can't say.

It didn't surprise me a lot to note you got a nonstop to Toranto as it has a huge chinese population as does Vancouver.

Yeah, I would have expected a ship the size of a RoRo for those cattle. It would be interesting to know the sanitation systems on that ship. About 1500 head 24 days; I guess we know what they will be using for ship's ballast!! I did see that the crew's quarters and bridge was up wind from the herd.

Carnival sent me their new smoking policy part of which states that they will still allow smoking in dance clubs. My problem with that and we love to dance, is that smoke doesn't recognize the non-smoker's side! Enough about this subject, for as Jerry Jeff sang, "we been down this road once or twice before".

Klingon, you can skip that 60 degree day stuff for now on, as we're still dying down here. I saw a bird trying to pull a worm out of the ground and he was using a pot holder!!:D
