Who cancelled a cruise because of the new smoking policy?

Good luck. I have tried since day one to cancel one of the girls in my party. I too needed proof. First they wanted screen shots of what John Heald said, so I sent them two different days. Then they still said no. Then my PVP said if I had the last name and sail date of someone that cancelled w/o penalty before Sept 1, he could get mine cancelled, so I posted asking, but no one replied.

Hope you get yours back.

All of this is because you can no longer smoke in your stateroom and piano bar?

I think some people were looking for a way to cancel with no penalties.. like above .. the person already wanted to cancel?

The thread here, on CC earlier, was like ok folks, if you were looking for a way to cancel, here it is .. just say you smoke.

They may lose a lot of business, too. ;)

True! NCL has already lost a casino patron (me). My last cruise, the casino was so saturated that I decided that it was not worth it to be there. I overheard a passenger saying that he primarily came to the casino to smoke. If the rest of the ship comes close I will not sail NCL.

That's my same thought, I am a smoker and I would not cancel just because I could not smoke in my cabin, I have no problem going up on deck.

I am an ex smoker of 30+ years. I do not mind when people smoke but my lord why do some have to stand right by the doors and puff away. I sailed on Oasis of The Seas and I could not stay in their casino due to the smell of the smoke. IMO, very bad filtration system. Too bad because it is a beautiful ship althought I thought that the WindJammer food wasn't that good.

I just think that some are trying to teach Carnival a lesson. Well they will probably be saving Carnival money on the cleaning and deordorizing of the ships.

All this because you need to wait 2 minutes to smoke..I wish life wasnt soo hard. Soo glad these people are changing there sailings to other lines as it just makes lower rates for us....;)

Enjoy see ya!!!!!

Hopefully.....as more smokers get upset and stay home because of more restrictive smoking policies......ship staterooms and lounges will not smell like ashtrays .....and cruising will be more enjoyable for all us non smokers......who make up 80% of the general US population.

I have not seen the entire policy change. That is all there is, no smoking in the piano bar and cabins? As a safety factor, I thought that no smoking was permitted in cabins. Wow! Cancel a cruise.

I am very happy with the change. I have asthma that is controlled and I am not anti smokers. I have also cruised 10 times with Carnival and enjoyed every one. However, I have to say that the smoking in the casino has made my time in there a lot less enjoyable. I think that Carnival is trying to do the right thing for the majority of people who travel on their ships. My favorite cruise was on the Paradise in 2003 because it was their only smoke free ship. I don't have a problem with smokers outside or in many designated areas. I just think that those of us with asthma, pregnancy and other issues etc... should have the right to enjoy our vacation too. I hope if people are unhappy with the new policies they are allowed to cancel without penalty. It seems fair to me. I do think it is just as drastic to cancel for the smokers though as it would be for people like me to not cruise because of the old policy. That's just my "fair" opinion of the changes. Good luck cancelling if it is really what you want to do.

The quote says 'if you are Early Saver'. Maybe the OP is not Early Saver.
If the OP is not ES, then it doesn't matter. They are well outside of any penalty period.

I guess I am not aware of the "new" smoking policy but here is my recent experience. We just returned from the Destiny yesterday (6/13 - 6/18). My brother and sister in law smoke, I do not. They were able to smoke in their rooms, on the lido deck on 1 side, in the smoking lounge & I think in the dance club. Maybe the new rule wasn't enforced on our cruise b/c the effective date was in the middle of our cruise.

However, if my brother and sister in law couldn't smoke at all on the ship they would never cruise again and that would ruin our family cruise vacations. I think limiting the areas they can smoke is a better option IMO.

NCL is the one all the smokers I know are moving to. NCL is going to get a lot of new business.

I'm doing some general checking for NCL. I am keeping my Carnival cruise as it is as it's Nov 26 to dec 1. (unless I find out the ban starts at the start of the cruise because of the end date) I read somewhere that if the ban starts in the middle of one's cruise, the ban starts earlier.

If I do book with NCL, it won't be on one way in the future, it will just be a matter of time till they change policy too.

I think a lot of people are forgetting this .. that if there is just one smoker in the group .. who wouldnt cruise because he cant smoke where he could before .. then the whole group wouldnt book the cruise. Saying well 80% of the US is nonsmoking .. it can affect the nonsmokers too.

If that is what is really happening, it'll be just the opposite my friend. You'll see.

Carnival will be the the one benefiting.

i do smoke but only on the balcony with what's known as a smokeless ashtray. Just checked an Princess is going to ban smoking in both the cabins and on the balcony as of the new year. Looks like we are no longer wanted on cruise ships. They are getting too expensive anyhow.

Thank you all for your advise and information. I booked an Early Saver cruise. I found out that a cruise critic member was able to cancel a Sept. 20,2011 cruise. Plus, there was another cc member who was able to cancel her cruise directly with Carnival with no penalties. I think there are others too who have cancelled.

The manager at my travel agency said that I would need proof that other people have been able to cancel their booked cruises before Dec.1,2011.

I don't have any real proof. I only have user names of 4 cc members who have canceled their cruises.

I have already been able to cancel two Carnival future cruises for 2012.

I plan to call my T.A. tomorrow and ask again if I can cancel my cruise with no penalties.

Those who say they've cancelled may have done it BEFORE Carnival realized what they were doing. I see NO sense to cancel if the cruise is BEFORE Dec 1! Smoking regulations are the same till then. The ONLY change in effect now is banning in a few public areas!

Miss Diva,

If a rule makes a person make a decision that the entire group of people does not agree with that makes a person selfish. Why can you call this one person selfish because they do not want to do something they do not feel comfortable with ? Personally, I think you are being selfish minded.

It's a fire hazard no matter where you smoke or what kind of ashtray you use. Even when smokers do smoke in designated areas on deck, you always see the one who's flicking his butt over the side.

I didn't say anything about an entire group agreeing with anything......I said I can't imagine an entire group cancelling because of ONE selfish person.....it surely wouldn't happen in our group.

Same goes for mom, dad and kids.....if just dad who smoked throws a fit and cancels the family vacation because he has to walk a few feet further to have a smoke.....yes I would call that person selfish. And I can't imagine that happening...

Being a smoker and reading all the comments from both sides on this issue, I feel the need to chime in. For the last ten years I've seen smoking laws continually change and I've adjusted, and for the most part, taken it in stride. I've always been a respectful smoker, I never smoked in restaurants even when it was allowed, and always tried my best to go where my smoking would not bother non-smokers. I have no problem with Carnival having designated smoking areas on their cruises, just as long as they DO have designated areas for us. That seems only fair. Heck, the last time I was in Chicago and was getting ready to board my flight home at the airport, my flight was delayed for mechanical reasons. In order for me to smoke a cigarette, I had to go all the way out of the airport and come back through the entire security process. That was completely ridiculous. At least here in Tampa the airport has a designated patio area just for smokers. After that trip I came up with a plan for such situations. I purchased an electric cigarette kit, or e-cig as they are known. According to John Heald, these are completely ok to use on Carnival Cruises, as they should be, except in the dining areas, which is completely understandable. I’ll still have the right to have a cigarette when I want in the designated areas, but will also be able to have my e-cig while sitting at the lido deck enjoying a cold drink. Now, if smokers are willing to adjust and be considerate to the non-smoking faction, then non-smokers need to be a little more understanding as well. If the non-smokers come after me for having an e-cigarette, which is nothing more than a water vapor that does not have any harmful carcinogens and evaporates as soon as it is exhaled, than I know that they are only out to take away our rights as individuals. Let’s hope this is not the case and that we can all figure out a way to co-exist. Maybe we can show the whole world that people ARE able to figure out ways to live together on this crazy bouncing ball we call Earth. ;)

If that one person has total control over a group of people to the extent

that everyone cancels their cruise because he/she cannot smoke where

they did, then yes that person is selfish.

This is the exact problem that the Paradise faced back when it was smoke-free, the inability to attract groups. Granted, the new fleetwide restrictions are nowhere near as severe, and given that the entire industry is inching in this direction, I doubt that we will see much dropoff after the intial pushback.
