Who cancelled a cruise because of the new smoking policy?

I hate smoke in general, and have been bothered by smoke a few times from other balconies. Even on Celebrity, where it is against the rules to smoke on the balcony or cabin. But my best friend smokes, and I don't think she would be willing to go on cruises at all if she weren't able to smoke from the balcony.

 

Just wondering if this change in CCL policy will mean a high % of balconies will now be booked by smokers. Hoping that it won't be a fume fest every time I step out for some "fresh air."

 

So it looks like NCL and HAL are the last mainstream cruise lines for those who don't want so many restrictions on their smoking.

 

 

This is our experience. We book family cruises and people who used to book insides are booking balconies so they can smoke. We never smoke in our cabins, but we do smoke on the balcony. I enjoy my coffee and cigarette in the morning in my PJ's before the kids wake up or at night while they are sleeping, and if they stopped smoking on the balcony we would choose another type of vacation. I like cruising, but could do without it.

I am a smoker and do not mind smoking in a designated area. In fact, more and more, I am grateful for them! However, this all or nothing attitude - from both sides - seems to be getting us nowhere.

 

I truly think that 'reasonable' compromise is possible, or could at least be tried prior to alienating one group or another. Why not simply designate a percentage of the cabins as smoking cabins? Then if a non-smoker chooses to book a smoking cabin, they have nobody to blame but themselves. Smoking cabins could all be on one deck of the ship, or perhaps a chosen number on two or three decks - all aft on the same side of the ship (smoke's not blowing in on any non-smokers!). Then, by grouping the smokers together, the non-smokers are automatically grouped together also.

 

I know that many people will not be happy until entire ships are smoke-free. However, until that comes to fruition, workable alternatives should be considered.

 

Logistics and percentages would have to be worked out, but I definitely think that CCL could make more of an effort to keep all its customers happy. The Spa Deck is already smoke-free, so smokers don't book there. I haven't heard any complaints about this, have you? Why not make the same adjustments ship-wide?

I can't help myself. Sorry. But the reality is that, within a short time, all the cruise lines are gonna have policies more restrictive than Carnival does. Most already do. In fact, I would venture to guess that within not too awful long, the only place to smoke on any ship will be in some closed in little room made of steel and glass. I used to smoke. It became (1) a hassle (2) too expensive, and (3) stupid to do considering the risks. But each to their own. Just set back and think about all the restaurants, hotels, and airplanes that people can smoke in. Heck, there are some cities that are trying to ban all smoking on its streets and parks. So, bottom line, pretty soon, if you want to cruise, you're gonna have to deal with it. Not my idea. Just simple reality. Now, can't we all just get along and love each other? First drink of liver rotting booze is on me!!

HAL is also banning smoking in cabins. So they will be similar to Carnival.

What ever happened to all those who were preaching with vehemence that Carnival would NEVER change their smoking policy?

 

Many of us were mercilessly flamed for simply stating that it was inevitable.

 

It's a welcome and long overdue change that benefits non-smokers and the stewards who have to clean the rooms.

You should be able to cancel your cruise without penalty as you are still way more than 75 days out. Now, if you are booked ES then you'll have to pay the $50 per person change fee, but as others have said, if you are canceling just because you can't smoke in the piano bar which is the only restriction that you will face that's a pretty radical thing to do IMO.

I have refrained from addressing smoking issues but must make a comment. I enjoy cruising and I am a smoker.I always book a balcony and will continue to smoke on my balcony.

 

If and when all cruise lines abolish smoking on balconies then we will return to our favorite island Aruba.

The people are gracious,the food fantastic and the water sublime.

You are able to smoke in your room,on the beach and all lovely outdoor resturants.

So you are worried about Javier, who is in the cabin for 15 minutes with the door open (and lets be honest, I bet Javier isnt a cabin steward for 15 years). An extreme case.

One person in a family or group smokes....then they can get a balcony after dec 1 and smoke there and on the one side of deck and in the disco and casino....and on Conquest ships in the "smoking aft" lounge

 

It is not like they have to NOT smoke at all...they are simply more limited

 

Most vacation options will limit them today....all inclusives like Beaches and Sandals have been non smoking indoors since 2006.

 

Sorry to tell you I smoke in my suite at Sandals everytime I go. Last year and the year before the butler that was assigned to me brought the ash tray and put it by the bed

Well, back in the late 80s I worked in one of the old CareUnits / alcohol & drug treatment facility. Smoking was allowed pretty much anywhere inside the facility. Heck when I first graduated nursing school, patients would smoke in their beds & the hospitals allowed it.

 

I have asthma, my asthma got so bad working around it that I was on 2 different oral meds plus my inhalers, & would regularly wind up in ER looking so bad they'd run get the crash cart when they saw me. :eek: It really is an issue, and if decades later the non smokers come up with lung cancer - they may wonder if it was from their work exposure but really no way to prove anything.

 

But I digress. So HAL has now banned smoking in cabins? Wow! HAL, which seemed to be the last bastion of the cigarette lover. I better pop over to that board and watch the fireworks show for a while.

 

And no hating on cigarette smokers here - I know even if people would give anything to quit it is monstrously difficult. We all have our drugs of choice. If a cruise line wanted to take my coffee away they'd see flames shooting out of my ears.

I am the OP and finally Chris41 answered my question. I had asked if anyone had cancelled because of the new smoking policy and he is the only one who said he had cancelled some cruises. He even cancelled a Nov.2011 cruise.

 

Chris41, did you have an "early saver" booked cruise for the Nov. cruise that you cancelled? Lucy R.

 

 

No Lucy I wasn't booked on early saver so I can not help you on that one.

 

When I get a chance to talk to some of the other people that were booked along with us that also canceled I will ask them

I think you or taking my statement which was general.. did not apply to 100% of people too personal. Some people are going to try and cancel, for other reasons, I already know some who are.

 

Lets not take a general statement of fact and say its not true because you really do want to cancel for legit smoking reasons.

just back from NCL..no indoor smoking venues but the casino and I guess a Cigar bar if they have one...and when someone lit up on the wrong side of the Lido he was promptly told by the crew to put it out....

My husband and I both smoke as do the couple that often travels with us. I am sailing in September but did cancel my cruise in February. Reason being, of course, is the change in the smoking policy. I have never sailed that time of year and personally don't want to stand on a balcony and freeze my backside off while I am on vacation while waiting to get to warmer climates. That's my choice.

 

When I called to cancel (after John H.'s post), my PVP didn't have a clue about what I was talking about. Now mind you, this was days after he'd posted this information on FB. I ended up telling her the time of the posting so she could see for herself and once everything was said and done, our Feb. cruise was cancelled without penalty and no hard feelings from our fabulous PVP. She's a smoker and more than understood my reasoning.

 

Will I cruise again? Most certainly. Yes, we will get a balcony (priced higher than our normal rooms and no we've never stayed on the lower decks) and enjoy our smokes. I will offer my apologies if there happens to be someone on the balcony next to ours that doesn't smoke because yes, I will smoke. Non-smokers need to understand this is our only option where rooms are concerned and both my husband and myself will fully enjoy OUR vacation and the facilities WE paid for.

And on a side note, thanks for the heads up on Aruba. Now to just find the right resort and the right deal to go along with it.

Just my opinion but most of the uproar is from smokers who book inside and oceanview rooms. Smokers who book balcony rooms, like us, don't seem to be kicking up much fuss at all or canceling cruises. That being said, I smoke and smoking in one of the IS or OV rooms would be too much for me.

 

I have chosen to take my vacation $$ elsewhere though as the value of what you get on Carnival is not what I can get elsewhere.

Ok on your say so....I wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken so I went to the desk and asked and they said no problem......Maybe it was because I only book the suites with butler service that is why they cater to me.

 

By the way which Sandals did you stay at and which room catagory as I have stayed at all of them except 1 so we may have a lot to talk about

I am trying to cancell my Oct. 30, 2011, cruise because of the Carnival new smoking policy as of June 15, 2011. Carnival doesn't want to cancel my cruise. I know for a fact that some people here have been able to

cancel their cruise for Nov.11, 2011....because of the new smoking policy that took affect as of June 15,2011.

 

I have not been sucessful in canceling my cruise. I need HELP!

I booked through a Travel agency. He told me the Carnival resolution dept. would not approve my canceling without causing me to have to pay penalties. According to John Herald sp we are allowed to cancel cruises earlier than december.

Does anybody have any new information?
