I've heard that Cpt. Karin Stahre Janson is resigning from Serenade of The Seas because the authorities in Dubai doesen't want to have a female captain.. Not sure how true that is though.

Yes, its true, women can't drive cars in the Middle East, much less a ship! Tjukka told me this last week, Capt Karin isn't resigning as much as RCI has to move her. She's supposed to go on vacation February 11 so I imagine she won't return to the ship. She would have been due to come back in time to take Serenade over on the TA to Barcelona. So we will have to wait and see when RCI moves her.

Does anybody have recent information about Captain Rune Lokling? He left RCCL several years ago, and I think he was trying to start a small, not-for-profit cruise line. I've also heard rumors that he might consider returning to RCCL, if the other venture doesn't work out. With all the events in the news lately, I've been thinking about Captain Rune (my all-time favorite RC Captain). In an at-sea catastrophe, I'd be willing to bet that he'd be the LAST person off the ship -- certainly not among the first! :rolleyes:

 

I think he's the only one keeping his pipe dream alive, nobody will lend him the start up cash. So he's remarried and is teaching at the Maritime College over there (in Oslo?).

In certain middle east countries women can't drive, not all countries! for example in this case in UAE (Dubai) women can drive freely around.

Hi karen

I saw some people asking about Rune Lokling.

He is Managing Director of ‘Norwegian maritime Education center’ in Horten, about 1 hour south of Oslo. It moved into new buildings last year, after having been in the same place for 50 years. Bill Wright is educated here.

nothing happened except she was born female and Serenade will be deployed in a male dominated country. Women aren't allowed to drive.

She can swap with Captain Kasselas on the BR.

 

she could, and it would make my husband's day if she were the master for our October cruise on BR. RCI can move captains around anytime they want but Capt Henrik has been working on BR longer than Capt Kasselas (I think).

Perhaps some of the ports of call are in countries that don't allow women drivers?

 

It doesn't really matter whether she can legally "drive" or not. It boils down to an issue of respect. Respect for the uniform. If passengers challenge her, her authority is undermined and who knows what will happen. Like it or not, you have to yield to the apparent desires of the local culture.
