Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway

Selected as Names for Norwegian's New Ships

Norwegian Cruise Line has selected the final names for our two new ships: Norwegian Breakaway, Launching in April 2013, and Norwegian Getaway, Launching in 2014. The names were selected as the culmination of our "Norwegian's Cruising for Names" contest that was held in conjunction with USA Today.

These names best reflected the innovation of the brand along with the freedom and flexibility of the line's signature Freestyle Cruising and invoked the feeling that these ships will provide a "break" at sea from the stress of everyday life.

Breakaway is defined as "a departure or break from routine or tradition" and Getaway is defined as "a place where one escapes for relaxation, vacation, etc."

The contest winners are Kimberly Powell of Lafayette, Louisiana, who first submitted Norwegian Breakaway, and Dennis Hultman of Vienna, Virginia, who first submitted Norwegian Getaway. They will both receive a trip for two to the first ship's inaugural festivities, including the Christening Ceremony.

The Breakaway class ships will each be 144, 017 gross tons and will have approximately 4,000 passenger berths. These new ships will take the best of the best from all of Norwegian's existing ships drawing on the line's experience of having launched 10 ships in the past 10 years. Really! thats the best they could do.

They selected the name breakaway because they are going to break away from tradioion.

They are going to allow smoking everywhere including cigars, they are going to allow everyone to bring on booze at no charge so that they don't have to but any more xray machines.

They are also going to continue to allow kids to roam free without supervision but instead coral the inconsiderate parents and force them to eat at the kids buffet.

They are also going to sell passes for the sole purpose of chair hogging.

I don't care for the names at all. These names have no hint of prestige or luxury. I don't think in conversation these names even convey a sense of being innovative. Example: "Hi Jennifer - do you and your husband want to go on the Breakaway with us?" Sorry to offend - but it just sounds dumb.
