BengelaCruisers Posted December 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 11, 2011 For the 1st time, we are actually driving to the port and want to bring a wheeled cooler on the ship to put on our balcony so we can keep cold drinks out there while we sit/relax. How big of a cooler can we bring and still get it thru the port security? It just has to fit thru the xray machine? And if it doesn't, can we just pawn it off to the porters w/the rest of our luggage for them to bring it aboard? Anyone ever dealt with this? firefly333 Posted December 11, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 11, 2011 I would ask this on the particular threads for that cruiseline as they all probably have different rules. Carnival for instance allows a 12 x 12 x 12, and if its even 1/2 inch larger sometimes will confiscate those rolling coolers. They dont want them aboard. BengelaCruisers Posted December 11, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted December 11, 2011 thanks--I am sailing on HAL, so I will post a thread there too.
sail7seas Posted December 11, 2011 #4 Share Posted December 11, 2011 I saw this question on the HAL board and asked "what are you going to do with such a large cooler"? Why would you want to lug it?
jdvmd Posted December 11, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 11, 2011 Why not use the refrigerator in the cabin for your drinks?
BengelaCruisers Posted December 11, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted December 11, 2011 with wheels, a cooler can be used as just another piece of luggage...u can put food, drink, whatever in it when boarding the ship...i plan to sit on my balcony w/a cold beverage and not have to walk down to a bar or even inside my room to refill it...come on, I'm on vacation!!! trying to minimize any work that i have to do!!! :)
sail7seas Posted December 11, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 11, 2011 We just returned from two weeks on Nieuw Amsterdam. I see you sail December 18. Hope you have a great cruise.
PennyAgain Posted December 11, 2011 #8 Share Posted December 11, 2011 You can't store stuff on your balcony, so you will have to live with your cooler as furniture in your room when it is not with you on the balcony. Cruise ship rooms are small, you won't have far to walk to get a beverage.

No, never brought a cooler on a cruise. Can't you just bring one of those collapsible coolers that fold up and fit in your luggage? We often take those to beach vacations. They certainly are large enough to hold whatever you need out on your balcony.
griffy116 Posted December 12, 2011 #10 Share Posted December 12, 2011 You're walk to get a drink from the frig will be minimal. The cabins and the balconies are very small. It's not even worth it, for me.
kitty9 Posted December 12, 2011 #11 Share Posted December 12, 2011 One of the biggest rules on cruise ships is keeping things on the balcony. It's prohibited. I think a small collapsible cooler would be much easier to negotiate.
bbwex Posted December 12, 2011 #12 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I can just see the cooler on wheels as the ship starts to roll and/or pitch and the cooler goes flying from one side to the other. I know the wheels are only on one end, but it is worth a chuckle.

Krazy Kruizers Posted December 13, 2011 #14 Share Posted December 13, 2011 I have seen people take smaller coolers onto HAL ships. You would have to bring it inside for night and sea days. Your cabin steward can fill it with ice for you.
Colorado Kat Posted December 18, 2011 #15 Share Posted December 18, 2011 I bring a small, foldable cooler with me, mostly for shore excursions. I pack it inside my luggage, with clothes inside it. Packed that way, it does not take up much room.
