Gerald Cayhill Steps Down

actually, it's cramming more and more people into slightly larger ships.

Certainly that's one more way to maintain low cruise fares. I cruise Carnival because the extras some miss are not a factor for me enjoying my cruise. I look forward to my balcony, a lounge chair in the sun with a book, a workout, nightlife (alcohol), the ports and being on a ship surrounded by water. I will cruise as long as rates stay where they are in relation to an AI vacation. Cost is the biggest factor for the largest number of vacationers. For those where pampering and the finer things are critical there are plenty of alternatives. Don't try to change a successful product like Carnival into something it can't (and doesn't want) to be - just jump on a different cruise line and pay for it. It's laughable to read all the posts from people who complain about the necessary changes over the years - inflation either forces the prices go to up (they haven't) OR costs must be carefully managed (they have been). It HAS to be one or the other. That means cutting things out that used to be there.

He's keeping cruise prices flat - which keeps the ships sailing full - which means he is doing exactly what he was hired to do. If cruise fares were to go up to any significant degree I would just go to an AI every year. Cruising is already more than expensive than the AIs I go to and additional amenities on a cruise would increase prices. If a cruiser wants more amenities and is willing to pay more then there are plenty of cruise lines (like Carnival's sister lines) that already offer what you are looking for. Why would Carnival add these budget busters back in...which would raise prices when it's already offered by the other lines? They own the market they have positioned themselves in - to suggest that they should reposition themselves so they can go head to head with the competition is naive.

Take your logical thought elsewhere!:) I totally agree. Unfortunatly people will always pine for how it used to be 'in their day'. The product is going to be what makes the company the most money, if you don't like it, look for a product that fits our needs better.

Im no fan of the changes that he has brought in, but I have to say this; that "sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you dont know"! Whoever steps in could be wielding a chopping tool worse than his! I shudder to think of what else they might do away with or begin!

However....if this were the case; yes I also would not mind the return of the steel drum band on Lido deck, but mostly I would like to see the return of 150pc pricing for certain staterooms for solo travellers. JMHO.:)

Oh yes, afterthought...bring back the Captain's party like it used to be. That was really nice, but then again in those days they called it formal night, now it is cruise elegant night, or something like that, so it is a couple of steps down from what it was. I much preferred the older version of Captain's party.

We are now paying less for cruises than we did 10 years ago.

Cutting costs has allowed this to happen so be careful what you wish for.

You are paying less??? How is that possible....we are not...let us in on your secret....prices have been steadily going UP and UP....kind of confused with posts like this!!

even the new commercial i saw this morning said 3 day cruises start at $299. that used to be for 5 day cruises. i'm watching tapes from 10 years ago that show that.

If we got Uncle Bob back, we'd probably get commercials with Kathy Lee Gifford back, too. Those were fun years, and Carnival was fun, too. The midnight buffets, the Captain's parties, the sequined gowns on formal nights. Cruises back then were more traditional, and food was a good part of why people enjoyed them. Now it seems like people sail for the multiple experiences like sliding tubes at the pool, adventure shore exes etc., but not for the food, and not for the feeling of being a millionaire for a 3, 5, or 7 day cruise. I don't know if I could afford the cost of the type cruise I fell in love with

free rum swizzle partys in the casino on the day of sailing...

Oh, how I used to love the first night. Trays and trays of those rum swizzles--the waiters were so generous with those things. And they sure were tasty!!

We've paid pretty much the same for the past 8 years. We usually pay between $500-$850 for a balcony for a week. Hasn't changed much that I have noticed, except during the recession when prices did drop quite a bit.

What do we want Carnival to bring back that we once had when Bob Dickinson was at the helm?

Won't ever happen. Mr Cahill is doing good by the stockholders, and that is all that matters. Good for Carnival's bottom line, good for me!

I agree with you and I remember those times as well. The midnight buffets use to be the big thing that you remember mostly. It just seemed a lot better back in the day.

We too are paying less for a 7 night cruise than we did years ago.

In 1981 we paid $1050.00 per person for an inside cabin on Home Lines Oceanic on a 7 night cruise. In 2011 we paid $819.00 per person for an 8S spa balcony cabin on the Carnival Magic for a 7 night cruise.

Exactly. It's not like Mr. Cahill makes all the decisions by his lone self. There's surely a board of directors and some highly paid market research people, along with other "beards" who make suggestions and bring ideas, and as you say, the stockholders. I think placing "blame" on Mr. Cahill for all the changes people don't like is kind of silly. He's only one of many who are responsible for changes.

And, let's say he retired tomorrow and there was someone brand spanking new in his seat. Do folks really think they would turn the clock backwards towards the past? The "good old" days never come back, things just always move forward. I've always enjoyed my Carnival cruises and as long as I continue to do so, I could care less who holds the title of President.
