KatetheWanderer Posted February 3, 2012 #256 Share Posted February 3, 2012 For all those who have never sailed Costa and wish to get an idea of how their ships are appointed. Read this article. When I sailed the Atlantica, I marveled at some of the beautiful pieces of art, even in the elevators. http://travel.usatoday.com/cruises/story/2012-02-02/Riches-left-in-Costa-Concordia-a-lure-for-treasure-seekers/52938946/1 "The Costa Concordia was essentially a floating luxury hotel and many of the passengers embarked on the ill-fated cruise with their finest clothes and jewels so they could parade them in casinos and at gala dinners beneath towering chandelier ceilings. On top of that was the massive wealth belonging to the ship itself: elegant shops stocked with jewelry, more than 6,000 works of art decorating walls and a wellness spa containing a collection of 300-year-old woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese artist most famous for his work of a giant wave framing Mount Fuji in the distance." "Their finest clothes and jewels" could have easily come from Wal-Mart. One mans treasure is another man's trash. Somehow I have a hard time believing that truly wealthy people with high end clothing and jewelry are sailing on Costa. The wealthy people I know cruise on luxury or at least premium lines. Costa is near the bottom of the mass market heap.
KatetheWanderer Posted February 3, 2012 #261 Share Posted February 3, 2012 "Their finest clothes and jewels" could have easily come from Wal-Mart. One mans treasure is another man's trash. Somehow I have a hard time believing that truly wealthy people with high end clothing and jewelry are sailing on Costa. The wealthy people I know cruise on luxury or at least premium lines. Costa is near the bottom of the mass market heap. You're right. I didn't see any really wealthy Americans but I did see some very wealthy Europeans. Most TA's will tell that the more expensive the cruise, the older the demographic and the less chance you'll get of having good kids programs and a more active holiday atmosphere. Italians love Costa for obvious reasons. And there are apparently many wealthy Italians who like to cruise on ships with a wide age range and with kid programs, etc. I saw multi-generational families turned out in gorgeous clothing every night for dinner. In Italy, it's all about the family. When you go to Italy, you'll see how beautifully many people dress in the best designers just to go to the grocery store. France and Spain are the same. Save some room in your bags for the shoes and purses. The selection is amazing. Even the shops on Costa had some really nice Prada, Versace. Pricey of course. Americans tend to leave our good jewelry at home. We are scared of getting jacked in some back alley in Rome trying to find the Pantheon. Then when you get there, you see all these Italian woman wearing nice stuff and you think, how do they not get robbed. Even with my limited travel collection, I would have lost about 8K in jewelry if the Atlantica had gone down and I had not grabbed my little satin bag out of the safe when I got my life jacket. Gold is through the roof now.
KatetheWanderer Posted February 3, 2012 #262 Share Posted February 3, 2012 The fun is only beginning. Ron PS. Always room for another!;) Love the ship pic Ron. We have 37 confirmed for the nups. They are all the poor and downtrodden who can barely afford to scrape together the necessary cab fare let alone the cruise ticket. Except of course Chuck from Capri who is probably on his fifth $200 massage.

Kate, the "Magnificant 37" maybe poor and down trodden with only WalMart finest clothes and jewels, but they enrich one's life with their friendship. One cannot choose the family but one can choose your friends. Ron PS. I think Grumpy is getting cold feet, I certainly am (was 5°F this afternoon, Siberian winter). I could do with a foot massage, still nothing from Chuck about his session with Suzi.
