Norovirus - have you had it?

Twice and both times I ended up in the ER. Never on a ship..

And 1st time was when it went around over 10 years ago. It was flu season I had not gotten my shot. I felt fine when I went to bed and woke up at 5 am sick. I thought I was dying. Could not hold down water. It was bad and did not get better with time only worse. It took me 8 hours to go to er and 2 bags of fluid and the good drugs later.. But at least I didn't pass out until I was in the er. I thought I was going to die. Cut to 2010 2 days before my wedding.( too early to get flu shot) I had gotten in at 3 am from picking up FIL at airport up at 6 sick. This time I tried to tough it out, I told my husband I was feelign better so he would not stay home with me. he was going to the sox game with the boys that night . i went to the airport to pick up family with MIL and got sick in the car. I ended up in ER after passing out. I had to call MIL to bring me to hospital. It took me over 12 hours from onset to go to er. And I got the I should have gone sooner lecture. 3 bags of fluid. 2 shots and they tried to tell me no food for another 24 hours ( it would have been 2am on the wedding day before I could eat. I told them my rehearsal dinner was 14 hours away and tell me my bed food choices as I can not watch others eat and I had not eaten in over 24 hours already

Now I felt like death and was tired too. But the fluids make your skin glow!!

Never had a feeling of something coming on it was a I woke up and ran to the bathroom . I also spent some quality time napping on the bathroom floor.

I do not wish this on my worse enemy. Somehow no one else got it.

Had a "mild" case of it 2/17. Was supposed to leave early pre-cruise on the 18th. Was enough to make me cancel my 2/19 cruise. :(Sucked to miss the cruise. Didn't really feel better until the evening of 2/20. By then I would have probably contaminated everyone at JFK airport, MIA airport, InterContinental Hotel, the cruiseport, and on the Glory if I had gone!:p

Unfortunately, our family had it on the Celebrity Soltice Cruise a year ago. It was the most dreadful vacation of our lives. If came on fairly quickly, with stomach cramping and then explosie diahhrea and projectile vomiting (our kids), and sometimes at the same time = ( We were quarentined to our room, as was a large number of people on the ship. There were hazmat type teams everywhere cleaning spots where people had their suprise events in public areas. I am a Nurse, and I really did not realize how awful you do feel with Noro. We all felt weak, and had residual stomach aches for weeks.

I had it on the Princess Crown Cruise of Dec. 17-Dec. 24,2011. You are right..It was the worst vacation of my life. I felt nauseous on Monday Night. But the waves were awful. We were sailing through a gale. My DH and I went up to Cafe Caribe to eat..and I could not no. When we walked across the deck.......the water in the pools was being whipped out by the strong winds.

that night I had some tummy issues. I called the nurse the next morning..she brought me some seasick pills..some diarria(sp) pills.....AFter 15 minutes I was no longer nauseous. Never had any more tummy issues. I did the Hazemat folks bringing bland food and cleaning the cabin..and they were dear souls. I wound up tipping them a good deal of the money I had intended to donate to the casino.....

THE MEDS MADE ME SLEEP. I THINK I SLEPT FOR TWO DAYS. I HAD A BOOK I WAS INTERESTED IN...WATCHING TV..DID NOT KNOW THE SCHEDULE..HELL IS GOING TO BE WATCHING NOTHING BUT CNN INTERNATIONAL.....FOREVER.

RUINED MY CRUISE. DIDN'T MAKE ME ALL THAT SICK..I WAS LUCKY. HALF THE PEOPLE ON THE SHIP WERE SICK..UNORGANIZED. STAFF WAS SICK TOO..BAD TRIP. SINCE THEN..WE HAVE SAILED ON CARNVIAL..BOOKED TWO CRUISES ON NCL AND MIGHT BOOK ANOTHER ON CARNIVAL.

PRINCESS? I WOULD BE AFRAID TO TOUCH ANYTHING.

HAVING BEEN A VICTIM..I KNOW THE PREVENTION TIPS

Wash your hands. Soap and water work best. Just holding your hands under running water for 40 seconds + washes the wicked virus from your hands.

Sanitizers do work........if you dry your hands.

Use your own cabin restroom when possible. avoid the public ones.

take a jar of Clorox Wipes. When you get in your cabin..wipe down your bathroom wipe the handle on the toilet..that is the most dangerous place on the ship...your toilet. the handle.

wipe your phone. anything you will touch a lot..the remote for the tv...etc.

carry sanitizer with you..and use it. often.

Happy Sails!

Yes, in 2005 on the Conquest. It was miserable. Not sure if I actually contracted it on the boat, or on the plane on the way down or the 24 hours in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

It was perhaps the third day out, and I felt odd all afternoon, but got dressed up and went to the captain's party and then to the MDR. Suddenly, I knew I had to get out before I turned into Mr. Creosote. I tell you, it's the kind of virus that makes you appreciate the compactness of a cruise-ship bathroom.

What really struck me as odd was that the infirmary had a sheet iincluding a basic menu of what to eat during recovery, and none of which was available through the ship's food-service! What, it's too much trouble to keep a couple cans of chicken noodle soup on hand? I had soda crackers and Sprite for two days until i could graduate to apple juice and toast.

The stewards and housekeepers really spent the rest of the week disinfecting bathrooms too. I don't think I was the only one who had it.

Now I front-load with probiotic drinks for a couple weeks before making the trip, and haven't had any issues since.

Adding to AmberTeka's post above - the steward cleans your room every day and probably uses the same cleaning cloths on multiple rooms, so we also take Lysol or Clorox spray and give a quick spritz over the door knobs, bathroom handles, etc. every single day. The wipes work very well too and take your hand sanitizer everywhere with you, use it often! Thankfully, have never had it - and hope I never do.

.

I had a bout of it 2 weeks ago. Wasn't on a cruise and don't know where I could have contacted it from. There was only 2 places that I was at the previous 5 days. One was our church and the other was at a friends.

There was also a outbreak of it at a local ice rink. There was a hockey tournament and a few teams got infected.

i'd be surprised to find even one person that has never had it.

when you were in school, it made the rounds every year. it just had a different name then.

but having it as an adult, in my experience, is so much different and painful. have had it twice so far, never on a ship, and it took like 4 to 5 days to start feeling halfway normal.

DW and I have both had the misfortune--although not on the same cruise.

Comes on fast and then you stay tethered to the bathroom for a day or two. You'll feel a little puny for a day or two after that.

One tip--if it happens to you, it's important to stay hydrated. You can buy bottles of sports drink (like Gatorade, but a different brand if memory serves) at any of the ship's bars.

Yes, 2009, Mariner of the Seas. Last day of our cruise. Woke up feeling fine and went for breakfast and our usual walk around the deck with my husband. We got back to the cabin and I felt a little tired, so I tried to take a short nap, and then the nausea hit me. It was horrible. I had my husband bring me saltines and ginger ale throughout the day, and I missed our last dinner in the dining room with our friends and family. I never reported it, and by later that evening it passed and I had room service bring dinner.

It definitely wasn't motion sickness.

My daughter brought it home from school in late January/early February. She goes to a babysitter, and my MiL watches her after work. It took a few days for me to get it, long enough that I thought we had somehow managed to avoid her illness. Nope. Suddenly the baby started with symptoms, and then hubby and I got the symptoms , then my MiL and FiL got them. Everyone in the family went down like dominoes for two days. Plus, I visited my sister when I was apparently incubating, and it blew through her family too.

Debilitating nausea/vomiting/diarrhea with headache and dizziness. And then another week to get over the associated weakness and decreased appetite.

I am sorry to say I have had it a few times. With kiddos in school they bring home and share all sorts of things! The first cruise my hubby and I took on the Pride with another couple, we got sick on the 6th day of the cruise. It was just my husband, me and my girlfriends husband that got sick. We thought maybe it was food poisoning from the fried chicken on the Lido deck. But as we were debarking we heard others talking of being ill as well. The plane ride home was horrible to say the least. My husband the friend were only sick for about 3 days. Mines however lasted almost 2 weeks of vomitting just really not being able to keep anything down. Finally I went to the doctor to find out what was going on. Turns out, my vomitting was due to morning sickness....lol....Baby #4, Made in Mexico!!

yours sounds more like food poisoning or something else. Noro isn't usually done the same day, but who knows I am not a doctor and don't even play one on the internet either.:)

Yes..DH got it first ..one upside was we were already off the ship..on a bus on our way home. He started feeling lousy..all he could do to make it home on a Sun...by Mon..I drove him to ER cause he was so dehydrated.. I started feeling lousy a few hours into Mon after he was released from Hospital..by Mon nite when he decided he had to go back to ER I couldn't even drive him I was so sick also..
Two more upsides..we have 2 bathrooms in our home and there is another hospital right down the street from us so he drove himself!
Two days later he came home...I was starting to feel better and so was he...BUT ...I have decided after having 2 children and a major surgery some years later I would choose any of those as opposed to Noro. I truly thought I was going to DIE!
We ALWAYS carry antibiotic wipes and hand sanitizer ...I wipe everything down in our stateroom...carry a wipe in my hand for elevator buttons and handrails..and carry small hand sanitizer in the casino for the buttons on the machines. May sound paranoid but I NEVER want to be that sick again.

unfortunately, they do nothing to prevent norovirus.

but they do kill the good bacteria on your hands that can prevent it.

this is why most people that do use it are sicker than people using their auto-immune system and white blood cells.

I caught it but it wasn't from a cruise. It was from a airport that we got stranded in over nite. I had a high fever, throwing up and was so sick for a few weeks. Then I caught celiac from the stress of everything. That was terrible.
