Maasdam now has non smoking casino areas

GRACECRUISE

Recommended Posts

As of this leg of our cruise which began on Friday, the Maasdam has a section of the casino deginated as non smoking. Per the casino host, it is a policy change for the company and became effective with our cruise. The areas for smoking state that the area is for players only.

We are in beautiful Charleston today and heading to Rhode Island next.

When we were aboard two weeks ago, we were told they would begin this policy. Hopefully it is a first step toward making the casino usable by all. We were unable to use any of the machines during our cruise because of the heavy smoke.

I can't imagine how they are going to keep the smoke from drifting from one area to the other area as the Casino is one open area -- no dividers.

Yeah that's my worry too. I can't use the casino on HAL due to the smoke, it's just too thick. Even when it's closed, it stinks in there from the use from prior.

I sailed on X and their casino was smoke free and still had tons of players, so...not sure they are losing money on the change.

We got off on Fri. We don't use the casino because it's so smoky. In fact, we do our best to avoid that whole area, including the shops, Mix, Piano bars, etc.

We would visit the casino & surrounding area if it was less smoky. I would have liked to have judged for myself the difference a non smoking area would have made. I'll be watching to see what others report about it.

I do have to say that I noticed less smoke (except in the casino area) overall on this last cruise than I have in the past. So, I think the changes they made in the smoking policy had a positive effect.

Hmmm.....I guess we'll have to book another cruise to find out!

So, cigarette smoke doesn't 'drift'?

That is the point, as KK said, you can't keep the smoke from traveling into the non-smoking section. But the only thing is, at least you won't be sitting side by side with the smokers. So there will be some relief even though your not going to get away from some of the drifting smoke. It is an interesting concept, some of the Casino's I've been in do that. At least Hal is trying to do something to appease both sides because it is still legal to smoke and smokers have rights as well as non smokers.

I can't imagine why smoking is allowed in the casino anyway since it isn't in other areas. We avoid it for that very reason. What about the Crow's Nest on this ship? Is smoking allowed there as well? I'm hoping it will be totally non-smoking as we are sailing on her in mid May for the Canada/New England northbound run. When we cruised on the Ryndam, which I understand is a sister ship to the Maasdam, in the fall of 2010 the Crows Nest allowed smoking and we couldn't stand to be in there, which put a little bit of a damper on that cruise.

Smoking is not allowed in the Crows Nest on Vista and Sig class ships. It is allowed in the Crows Nest on the S&R class ships.

We spend a lot of time and money in the casino and I would hate for that to change.

I arrived back on the Maasdam on March 23 after a 21-day Collector's Cruise. The starboard side of the Crows Nest had ashtrays on the tables alongside the windows. I stayed aboard one day in port and decided to read up there and enjoy the view. A woman sat next to me and lit up. When the smoke drifted towards me, I moved to the port side of the Crows Nest which was non-smoking (no ashtrays on the table). Perhaps Sail was seating on the port side.
