GrammieMame Posted June 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2012 We are thinking about South America on the Star Princess. Could you tell me what is not included in the basic cruise price? I know gratuities and excursions, but how about other extras?
Pam in CA Posted June 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2012 Beverages, both soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. Bottled water is also extra, water out of the tap is just as pure and is free. Coffee is free but if you want specialty coffee, there's a fee for that. There's a charge for a few activities, such as Bingo. Specialty restaurants are also not free. I think the tap water out most ports are better than bottled water.

cruis247g Posted June 6, 2012 #10 Share Posted June 6, 2012 As you can see from the above, almost every necessity is included (many food choices, a few non-alcoholic drinks, a variety of entertainment, etc), with the exception of gratuities. You can spend a great deal of "extra" money (special dining venues, drinks, gambling, shopping, etc) or not very much. It's a personal decision, but we can enjoy a cruise either way ... without feeling deprived! There are so many fabulous choices that are included. Have a wonderful time in South America! Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted June 6, 2012 #11 Share Posted June 6, 2012 Shuttles from the pier into town in the ports that require it (ie. Buenos Aires because you dock in a large freight port) are not included but may be available for a fee. Otherwise, you'll need to have an excursion arranged or take a taxi to see anything of the area. Laundry/dry cleaning or the self serve laundries are not included. You will spend money to do local excursions whether you book them through the ship or independently, but that could be your largest expense category. We cruise quite happily purchasing only a soda package and one or two drinks a day, and have happily never had sticker shock at the end of a cruise. All ports (Diamond Princess 4/15 -5/19) where we were not allowed to walk out on our own had free shuttles.

These may get you to the port entrance, but that could still be far from anyplace you might want to go. Of course this is true even if you are allowed to walk to the port entrance. cruiseri Posted June 6, 2012 #14 Share Posted June 6, 2012 Should you do any guided port tours, either privately or through the cruise line, you'll have to pay extra for these. SAS
