bandlady74 Posted June 27, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Hi, Do staterooms on Ryndam still have ethernet connections? I thought I might pack my laptop, hoping that the wired signal would be faster than wifi. Any thoughts? Thanks, Amy:)
catl331 Posted June 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 27, 2012 No Ethernet, but there is slow wi-fi. To my knowledge there never has been wired connections on the Ryndam. The Vistas had a dial-up ports in the rooms at one time, but they never worked well.

Mary Ellen Posted June 27, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 27, 2012 It wouldn't help with the speed. You'd still have to be going through the satellite connection. When we've had to use our cells on board (also going through the satellite) we've really noticed the lag in being able to talk. Not going to be fast. Period. dakrewser Posted June 27, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 27, 2012 There are no ethernet ports available on any HAL ship, nor on Princess or Celebrity (as I recall).
PathfinderEss Posted June 27, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Sorry, but there is no ethernet on the Ryndam or any of those other 'dam' ships. Nice thought though.
catl331 Posted June 27, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Nice thought though. As Mary Ellen said, it wouldn't make any real difference since the speed problem is in the satellite link.
Rare rafinmd Posted June 27, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 27, 2012 There are no ethernet ports available on any HAL ship, nor on Princess or Celebrity (as I recall). Actually, Celebrity Solstice class ships have ethernet as well as the Crystal Serenity. I prefer the hard connection, but the difference in speed is minimal. bandlady74 Posted June 27, 2012 Author #9 Share Posted June 27, 2012 Thanks everyone. That makes sense about the data speed vis a vis the satellite. Sounds like it will be more logical to take just the iPad and leave the laptop at home. Amy:)
Mike91711 Posted June 28, 2012 #10 Share Posted June 28, 2012 For a fee, the Ryndan has WiFi in public areas, but not in the staterooms. I plan to use my iPad for email on the July 7th sailing.
RuthC Posted June 28, 2012 #11 Share Posted June 28, 2012 For a fee, the Ryndan has WiFi in public areas, but not in the staterooms. WiFi extends to the staterooms. Reception can vary, depending on how far from an antenna your cabin is, though.
sail7seas Posted June 28, 2012 #12 Share Posted June 28, 2012 All HAL cabins have WiFi though as Ruth says, it can vary how strong a signal we can get in our particular cabin. We just left Oosterdam and our cabin was immediately across from Neptune Lounge where there was a strong signal yet I could hardly get any signal at all two feet across the hall in our cabin. I went into Neptune when I wished to use my netbook.
catl331 Posted June 28, 2012 #13 Share Posted June 28, 2012 Here are the wi-fi antenna locations on the Maasdam. They will probably be similar on the Ryndam. dakrewser Posted June 28, 2012 #14 Share Posted June 28, 2012 For a fee, the Ryndan has WiFi in public areas, but not in the staterooms. I plan to use my iPad for email on the July 7th sailing. I had no trouble getting wifi reception on Ryndam in April, at least for my laptop and Kindle Fire. The iPad I had to take to the library to get any decent connection.
