Great pic, on of the best I have seen of Arcadia, thanks. Arcadia was our home for 49 days this year, Syd-Sou. When we docked at Piraeus we did a Athens city tour, this closed, that closed, demos every where. The Greeks were not happy chappies in April when we were there, are they still a little excited?

Hi Les

We are also from the Bay - what were your impressions of Arcadia - I see it is here in Oz again during the summer

G'day you are from Batemans Bay, I will give you the info on Arcadia which was our first P&O UK cruise, briefly, fine, but different from Princess. ..E Mail me if you like rather than go on here: lesmarycarter@aapt.net.au

No rush, away in Vic next week. Who knows, we could always meet for a Latte at the Village Centre ! or my second home, Catalina Golf Club!

Hi Les,

Different thread from the guy who got heaved from the Dinning room for no jacket, but see you are a golfer.

How did you fair on on the Arcadia afternoon sea days golf chipping ?

Me and the good lady are keen golfers over here in the UK so we were there every afternoon. Guess what she beat me most days and and came away with all sorts of goodies.

There is a cruise line Fred Olsen that does Golf sections for about £450 and we have been thinking we might try them one day.

Sorry to hear about the Arcadia Cough, I kept it at bay with the whisky mouthwash, but swallowed.....

Take it easy....Paul

Been on Arcadia before, its a very formal Adults only ship, my wife and i found it to be a bit too "stiff" and prefer Ventura and Aurora.

The buffet at the top of the ship was nothing special, room service for snacks is a better option in the evenings.

Also (i don`t know if anyone feels the same) its the most unstable ship we have ever been on, a slight swell and its seems to pitch and roll, a force 7 in Biscay and it was dreadful, we have been through similar conditions on other ships without the drama of Arcadia

We will continue to sail with P & O but we never look for Arcadia cruises now

Hi Rich,

Just shows how everybody has different opinions.

We loved the Arcadia as its an adult only, and we like the formal feel.

We tried Ventura and didn't like it as much as we felt it was too informal.

That's what's cruising is all about tho.

We were on the Arcadia when the sea was calm all the time so not sure how bad it could be.

Anyway happy cruising......

Indeed different ships suit different people, we also have had great cruises with Fred Olsen, Balmoral in particular is one of our favourites, smaller but able to get into ports the larger ships cannot get to.

Arcadia we felt was just a bit to formal for us, i understand that there a lots who enjoy that, as you do, its just not for us

The rolling and pitching just about put paid to us sailing on her again!!

Rich12, I'm quite surprised that you found that Arcadia rolled more than other ships because the stablisers on these Vista class ships are very effective. They also help, but less so, against pitching but have no effect on the other four types of movement: yaw, heave (the whole ship going up and down), surge (forward and back) and sway (the whole ship being pushed side to side).

The forces of nature are very powerful and no ship is perfectly stable but, for a cruise ship which is a block of flats on top of a hull, Arcadia is one of the better ones.

For maximum comfort in heavy seas, travel as near the centre of gravity as possible. This is obviously midships where you will not feel the pitching or yawing and due to the heavy steel engine room plant and light superstructure, is low down where the rolling and yawing is less. Finally, an inside cabin is closer to the lateral C of G than an outside and rolling will be felt less in these. So, a larger inside cabin such as G73 or G74 on deck 1 would be most desirable, being midships and nearest the centre of gravity.

Unfortunately, you can do little about surge where the swell makes the ship slow down, then surge forward rather than continue at a constant velocity, or heave, or sway. All ships suffer from these but the bigger the ship the lower the displacement fo the whole ship.

But, you're still very right: different ships suit different people.

Arcadia very formal eh!

It should be fun on her next year when I take my DJ of after dinner on formal nights. Lots of tut-tutting I expect ;)

Of course I am going for the itinery not the ship or the formal ambience.

Now if I had access to a copy of the in-cabin guide I would know how formal P&O, not the passengers, believe the ship is.

I am not trying to be controversisl but I have tried to get information on which venues require formal dress. No, not what it says in the brochure or on the web site. The only true information is in that in-cabin guide. :(

Any topic on any forum about Arcadia will have me asking the question but so far no info. i have the info for Ventura, Azura, Oceana and Aurora bu not Arcadia.

Dave, I quote from the Cruise Overview:

"Dress codes or Black Tie and Smart nights will be enforced in the Crow's Nest, Intermezzo's, Meridian Restaurant and the Ocean Grill"

Note that this does not include: Piano Bar, Palladium Theatre, the Orchid Restaurant and Bar, the Globe, the Spinnaker Bar, the Rising Sun, the Casino or the Belvedere.

So, there's choice for all.

Thanks, I can now forget about it until next May :)

I am doing the Baltic which will be all new ports for me.

I will be wearing formal gear and will take a cotton/linen jacket for semi formals but it is nice to know i won't be thrown out of the rising sun or the Casino if i change after dinner.

ARCADIA

Piraeus 6.9.2012

I keep coming back to this - it's a good video of a ship I like and some excellent music.

Please, what's the first track? - from the beginning to about 4:58?

Goodness, how different we all are. We did a 24 night cruise to the US and Canada on Arcadia, had some rough seas, she handled it beautifully. We didn;t find it stiff at all. Very friendly, bags of deck space and a wonderful Prom Deck. No problem with sunbeds either.

Dave I hear it has gone beyond tutting, another thread suggested that a good flogging was in order.:eek:

I said that I had not realised that this was an option....but if it is in the rules:cool:

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone, we are looking to join the Sydney to Southampton world cruise sector in FEB 2014. We have never cruised with P and O before and would welcome some help.

Is room service dining offered and if so is it free?

Do you suggest taking a dinner jacket or can you rent these on board?

How many formal nights on a 46 night cruise?

What are the prices for the non MDR dining venues?

How far out should we book, any real advantage to booking this far out? ( we want a b/c deck cabin and none are on offer only A deck cabins!)

Any other suggestions would be very welcome and thank you very much in advance
