Cruise passenger arrested for with child porn

My thought was if he's going through RC online for his internet searches while on board, that would have been a huge red flag. I know RC can see where you've been surfing, that was probably his first mistake. From there they may have decided to check his laptop.

 

Yes, I agree with the other poster, save the rest of us law abiding, tax paying citizens from having to pay for this moron once he goes to federal prison. (that's a 3rd degree felony to have it in your possession in the state of Florida) Just toss him overboard. Absolutely beyond disgusting.

I don't know what makes people want to have sex with children. It's just awful.

 

Fortunately- kids are far safer on a cruise ship than on land. I had an ideal childhood but we had a creepy man in our neighborhood that molested kids and I had the misfortune of living two houses away from him. Another kid was molesting his own mentally disabled sister and went to jail. I used to swim in their pool and play on their trampoline! Yikes. So I prefer ships to the real world.

 

Bravo to the police for catching this menace. The scarey thing is the mention of "missing and exploited children". That's just awful that these kids have obviously gone through hell. Sadness

 

Unfortunately, this isn't true when you consider the passengers onboard any given ship is a slice of American society as a whole. I would be willing to bet there is at least one pervert on every cruise. Sad, huh?

 

BTW...I spent my high school years in Timonium (went to Dulaney). Small world!

That'd be my guess (authority of customs). I was stunned to learn in law school the power customs & border protection have when you're in that limbo phase (awaiting customs screening) reentering the country. They can search your laptop and all of your possessions. Raises all sorts of concerns in the international business community about confidential trade secrets, etc., but it's the law.

 

Cruise contract wouldn't govern the actions of US Customs. It's just a legal agreement between you and the cruise line.

I always wondered about that too. There was a highly publicized case of a guy crossing the Canadian border that had his laptop inspected and was also arrested for child pornography.

 

There must be some sort of watch list or maybe it is based on internet searches. Horrible, unlawful behavior, for sure.

 

No authority has ever asked to look at our laptop when we travel with it.

 

He probably uploaded child pornography using RCI network -- all companies watch for that

You use the ships server with your pc or theirs and they know every site you visit if they want. They also could have certain flags set up so if you visit certain types of things they will get a notice up on the main.

I am happy that they got him before he got on the ship. Just goes to show you that you never know who is on a cruise and to keep an eye on your young ones.

Feds can inspect pretty much anything on board the ship. If you don't want your laptop searched, Google about encrypting your hard drive.

 

Would you really want to do that? If you have nothing illegal on the computer? If Feds do search it and find the whole drive encrypted they are going to be suspicious. Also the Feds, at some level, can break any commercially available encryption. My advice if you do have anything on there you're worried about is either don't take the computer or reformat the HDD and reinstall the operating system and applications.

 

Of course, unless they're already suspicious of you for some reason, the odds of the Feds taking your computer at Customs are probably pretty close to nil.

In US prisons, child sex offenders are considered the lowest of the low. It is very difficult for a child SO to be in the general population of a prison. Usually they must be kept in protected custody which means a lot of isolation and spending the majority of their time in their cell. He will be doing harder time than the average person in jail.

I so don't care what the cruise line, border or US gov't has access to. If you have nothing to hide- who cares? I'm an open book.

If he was arrested at debarkation, he probably had a warrant. Local law enforcement will run the names and socials of cruise passengers to check for warrants. Then, just wait for the ship to return and ...... you are busted.

 

We were on a Mex. Riv. cruise once as they arrested TWO different guys when we returned to Long Beach!

What's worse is just google crew member and child porn and you'll see a slew of articles on that. They just took a crewmember off the new Celebrity ship. Lots of these arrests are due to "tips". And my last few cruises I saw so many young children running around, in the elevators, all unsupervised. Parents think their children are oh so safe on board, but they need to be wary.

I agree with you. A cruise ship is a small floating city where both good and bad people can live.
