travlinbug Posted February 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2013  I have been a Princess gal(platinum) but that new Norwegian ship looks pretty awesome. I have always considered that line as below the other mass market lines due to so many negative things I have heard. However,I really like the way Breakaway has some venues that actually face the sea along a promenade. Also, the "Haven" concept appeals to me as one who has been willing to spend $$ on high end cabins. I was in the Grand Suite on Caribbean Princess (there is only one on ship and it is huge and lovely) but I found no added service related to my expenditure. I'm not a snob, but I thought I might at least be escorted to my cabin. No one even pointed the way! I have believed the food to be better on Princess than what I have heard about NCL,but last cruise, wrapped sandwiches??? Like a vending machine! I know this is a Princess forum, but please don't flame me and tell me to just get my whiney a-- to NCL. I really need some honest input. Thank you all. EddieCruzer Posted February 10, 2013 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2013 The only way to know is to try it. It's one cruise, not a life long commitment. Who cares what other people think? One man's trash is another man's treasure. ;)
Rare Coral Posted February 10, 2013 #3 Share Posted February 10, 2013 The ship intrigues me also! My friends who have sailed on NCL who have really liked it, have been in Suites. I would plan on spending money on speciality restaurants (based on what my friends have done on other NCL ships). My TA is booked on a short cruise on the ship and I can't wait to hear her impressions.
Shogun Posted February 10, 2013 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2013 Hi There Why not try it, you might love it, you might hate it, but you will never know unless you do it. yours Shogun
dmwnc1959 Posted February 10, 2013 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2013 Norwegian Breakaway has lots of interesting innovations and fun things you just won't ever find on a Princess ship. I definitely think it's worth a try. I have a friend of mine who cruises several times a year and has done just about everything from Cunard to Carnival. As a matter of fact, he did the Queen Mary 2 this past December, and is boarding the Carnival Breeze today. In between the two cruises he also did the Disney Dream and Oasis of the Seas. He is a repeat guest with all of those lines and Norwegian Breakaway peaks his interest too. One of my other board buddies here on Cruise Critic just booked the Celebrity Silhouette for March and is also going on the 2nd sailing of Norwegian Breakaway. So yes, give it a go. 'Different' is sometimes a good thing. :D .
skynight Posted February 10, 2013 #6 Share Posted February 10, 2013 Try it. If you like it in five years you may be posting "should I break away from NCL?"
KruzPrincess Posted February 10, 2013 #7 Share Posted February 10, 2013 You never know if you'll like something until you try it. I always tell people to try a lot of different cruise lines and then you'll know what really matches your personality. In defense of wrapped sandwiches.... Princess has had these for years. Some people like to grab a sandwich and take it somewhere else. It's nice for it to be wrapped to keep some freshness during the trip. I've only ever taken one once, but you can take them and put them in your fridge for a snack later in the day. It's a grab and go offering. Pre-made sandwiches dry out pretty fast. Nebr.cruiser Posted February 10, 2013 #8 Share Posted February 10, 2013 We've sailed on Princess more than any other line, but we still enjoy different cruise lines and ships; so far we've never had a bad cruise. We have sailed on NCL once, the Jewel, and had a terrific cruise. I was worried as they get so many negative reviews, but it was fine. This was several years ago, but I thought the food was good, and we never ate in a specialty restaurant. The entertainment was the best we've ever had--this was a TA. We had a minisuite, which honestly was about the size of a Princess balcony, except it had a great bathroom with tub. We did a cabin crawl and the balcony cabins looked tiny. If you can splurge for one of their big suites, like the Garden Villas, they are heavenly! And, this is the only cruise we have been on where we saw someone turned away from the MDR in the evening because they were wearing jeans. I was shocked, knowing NCL's freestyle concept. Many people dressed up just as much as on any other cruise. I don't know much about the Breakaway, but it and the Epic sound intriguing.
Rare philv Posted February 10, 2013 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2013 I entered the contest for the free cruise on the Breakaway and spent some time looking over the ship. It does look cool and if I win, I will certainly enjoy! ;)
sunlover5 Posted February 10, 2013 #10 Share Posted February 10, 2013 We have only sailed RC and Carnival. We will be experiencing Princess for the first time this Fall. Like my husband always says..."try anything once, if you don't like it, you never have to do it again!!":D
Caribensun Posted February 11, 2013 #11 Share Posted February 11, 2013 Recommend it, we also are looking at NCL suites from or Lux lines from now on. The new ship does look amazing, I think (my opinion) better than the Royal.

The new ship does look amazing, I think (my opinion) better than the Royal. Yes,I think for the price of a suite on Royal, one could get more perks on Breakaway and,as I mentioned,I like the eateries,etc...,that are on a promenade facing the sea. Would be nice to see the ocean more than just when using the pool/sundecks.
