SW USA is burning--wish I was on a cruise

We'd like to be back on that great, cool Alaska cruise today! Looks like a slight cool down by next weekend.

Hi Dave, hope you and Diane keep cool. Looks like we are at 100 not at 9am. Tom has been off the yesterday and today but will go back to work tomorrow and I am actually concerned for him since it is even hotter on the tarmac of the airport, it will probably be more like 128 around the planes. definitely will not be fun working for him on Sunday Monday and Tuesday then hopefully the temps come down a bit.

The entire southwest region of the US is expecting record temps thru the weekend. California, Phoenix and Las Vegas get all the publicity but NM is very hot as well. We get no respect :). Plus there are a lot of wildfires in NM, Arizona and Colorado.

As I sit here trying to stay cool, I am thinking that being in Alaska (like Glacier Bay) would be great. Saw the weather in Ireland watching golf this morning--players were wearing jackets. I am so jealous.

What other places are cool this time of year? Norway? Iceland (are there cruises there)?

Sweating and no oldies

ML

I see you're in the northern part of our state so are also in 100's. We have been over 105 for several days and, as a native southern Californian, I really miss the ocean. Our cruise isn't for three more months. Can't get here soon enough.

Yes, there are cruises to Iceland. I think NCL Star has a port stop there in September. We had a port day there three years ago in September on NCL Sun. It was sunny but cool. Really nice. Our ports stops in Norway were drizzly and cool. I'd love to have some of that weather right now.

Because of dryness we have evaporative cooler('swamp cooler') rather than a/c. It is on roof so now water to it gets warm and interior of our double wide is in high 80's but that still a lot cooler than the 102 outside. I stay mostly at our kitchen table though since we have window a/c there.

We have lots of haze, smoke from Gila area fire. Some might also have drifted from CO. My heart goes out to those in fire areas and especially the firefighters.

The Northeast and Calgary are having rain and floods, opposite of us who are suffering from third year of drought.

That is so awful to have to work in that heat. I heard flights may be cancelled because it is too hot for them to take off. Please be sure Tom takes all possible precautions. No one's health is worth being risked when it is so dangerously hot. Surely the airlines will find ways to get them relief.

All of you in hot spots........ please stay safe. You don't need us to advise drinking lots of water.

Phoenix shut the airport for one day when it hit 120 degrees. Apparently their charts didn't have the configurations needed for air temps higher than that. From what I heard, they've now been adjusted.

Phoenix also shut the airport when the fog was so heavy you couldn't see ten feet in front of you. Naturally this was the one time we decided to same day flight to San Diego for a cruise. Luckily for us the fog had burned off enough so they were able to put us on a later flight, and we made the ship (as it's only an hour's flight). I can still see the poor people standing at the Baltimore/Washington counter being told they still didn't have a flight when we finally boarded. Another reason not to fly the same day of a cruise!

The temp today is supposed to hit 115 with 10 percent humidity. When I get the mail out of the box, it's as hot as a piece of toast that just popped up. I will say that I am so used to this that any humidity wipes me out. I'd love to retire in FL to be near the cruise ports but I don't think I can handle the humidity.

Tuesday we're taking a bus trip to San Diego for some sightseeing, and right now SD is showing temps of around 77 degrees. But I wish we were boarding a HAL ship when we get there :)quote]

Yesterday it was 98* in the east San Diego county.

Right now, it is 8AM, and 77*. My AC is usually set at 77*.

Pat

I won't tell DH, he can't wait to get there and cool off!

Officially 105 here in Houston this afternoon with 27% humidity. Record heat.

The outside temperature showing on our thermostat is 114.

We were on a cruise to Alaska in May. It was freezing. We love taking cool/cold weather cruises prior to the summer inferno.

I talked to a friend in San Francisco this afternoon. It's 75 degrees there...

Got back from playing golf at about 3;30. we started at 8 am and it was Ok until about noon, then it got really hot. Only hit 102 at our house today. last night we had 2 short rain storms, about 10 minutes each. Not nearly enough water but it cooled us off nicely--dropped from 96 to about 73 in about an hour--really nice. Clouds are building up again here, maybe we will get a little more rain.

Dry heat at least keeps it a bit more comfortable but once it's 100, it's hot. If it was 100 and humid, like Houston, it would be pretty miserable. i'm not going to try the oven thing noted above by DizzyDallas!!

Can't believe how hot Las Vegas and Phoenix are. I wonder if all the water in Alberta/Calgary will flow down to the US and help the drought out? Doesn't water all drain downhill, so it has to go somewhere. But it is a lot of water.

Hope everyone stays cool. As NMLady noted, we use swamp coolers (evaporative air) and they only lower temps about 15 degrees, so it can be hard to actually cool things off. Nice to have AC as a backup or in 1 room.

I'm going outside to run thru the sprinklers!!

It appears we may not break the all time records like they thought they have revised the forecast since this morning. We were to hit 117 today, tomorrow and Monday, they are now saying a high of 115 today, 117 tomorrow and 115 Monday. We just got back from going to get groceries and my car said it was 117 and stayed 117 all the way home. Although there are scatter clouds and definitely more humidity than we are normally get. But we do have a 20% chance of rain this evening with thunderstorms.

Oh I would sure love to be back on our Alaska cruise about right now. Juneau is currently 70 degrees and 57% humidity :)

I'm so sorry to hear about all the high temps so many of you are enduring. I hope the heat breaks soon. Meanwhile, try to drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty, and stay inside where it's air cooled.

I am soooooooooooo jealous!!!!!!!!!! We did not get any rain at all:(

Sheesh 7 miles makes a big difference:(

I still swear it is those volcanoes on the West Mesa...The rain splits when it gets to them. 1/2 the rain goes south right at the I - 40 and Coors interchange and North of Sequoia, totally missing us in that 3/4's of a mile area and comes togerther again just across (East) of the Rio Grande:(

Glad to see you did not suffer heat stroke playing golf and hope you stay safe!! Considering this is not even the hottest month yet..........

We got some clouds and a bit rain. Also some lightening which I hope has not started any fires. Temp now is 75 which is not too bad... it cooled off really fast when the shower came through. My brother lives in Phoenix.... have not heard from him but know he is suffering. They just moved there from Ann Arbor!!!!!

So last night DH took me to the Sky Room in Long Beach for a romantic dinner & dancing, it was great.

BUT it broke my heart to see the lovely Carnival Inspiration sail away into the sunset and not be on her! Ugh. We needed to be on that ship.

Today we spent the day at Morongo Casino & Resort near Palm Springs. It was 118. Good thing pools were cool!

Thank God I never agree to work weekends before or during holidays.

Could you imagine setting up a wedding, maybe outside today, possibly somewhere where it was probably 105 or higher here in CA??!! So glad I was off this weekend.

SO glad my dogs are indoor dogs.

Getting a break here in San Antonio this morning. We were around 103 at our house yesterday and right now at 9 AM it's 76 on our patio and still dropping. It's pouring rain, about 1/2 inch in the last 15-20 minute, with lightning and thunder. Got so dark that my landscape lights around the pool, which are on a sensor, came on about 30 minutes ago. They'll shut off once it lightens up again. I need to run out to the drugstore to pick up a prescription renewal and get big mailing envelopes for our passport renewal that we put together yesterday since it was too hot to be outside much. No real pressure to get those mailed since we won't need them until late next April but they expired in January 2014 so it has to be done. Actually took our own pictures here at home and used the passport picture tool on the Department of State website. Worked well and I think they'll be acceptable, certainly better than our old pictures which were taken at a UPS store. :)

So true!! I was thinking about this yesterday, as we drove the cart off the golf course at about 1 pm, 100 degrees. The kids who work at the course come out and get the cart and take your clubs out front. I would normally do this for myself, but i was so hot and tired, I let him do it--and gave him $5!! Then I went and sat in the nice AC bar, had a cold beer while we totaled up scores and did our fun raffle. I saw the kid later when i was leaving and told him to go home, it was too hot to lug golf bags. he he "I wish...". I must be getting old. Even though the kids are young and strong, they still need to be careful whne it is this hot.

We had some nice storms last night. really cooled off as it blew in, only a little rain, then after it was over, it started getting hot again!

OMG--Ann Arbor to Phoenix!! he is definitely suffering, from heat and culture shock ;) My hubby is from Dearborn, went to school at UM, then took his first job on Phoenix. He was only there for about 6 (hot) months, then got moved to Albuquerque. he likes Albuquerque a lot better!! More to do and better shopping in Phoenix but too hot. When you talk to him, maybe don't tell him how nice Durango is, especially at night!

We are off to Vallecito lake in 10 days--can't wait!!

Wow,congrats on the nice rain, you lucky dog!! I wish we could get something like that, instead of the short, not very helpful rain we have been getting. Maybe our summer monsoon will kick in later this week--that is the forecast. I hope they are right.

Go out and dance in the puddles--like in Singin' in the Rain!!

We got those storms yesterday afternoon, too and it did cool off and highs today on mid to high 80's. Not too bad and it does cool off at night. Heard from my brother.... guess the heat really does not bother him as much as it would me. I think he found Ann Arbor too cold so he must be a heat lover.... I prefer cool or cold.

Even Alaska is hot now but a nice cruise with ocean breezes sounds sooooo good. Have friends on the VOV at end of this month and I really envy them.

Rain is pretty much over now. All in all we got just barely under an inch here at the house...and my gauge is pretty accurate....though I don't know what the official rainfall was at the airport nine miles south. It's 73 on the patio so a whole 30 degrees cooler than yesterday. :)

In Las Vegas, the temperature hit 117 degrees at McCarran International Airport on Sunday, tying an all-time high for any month of the year, Weather.com reported. That temperature was last reached on July 24, 1942 and July 19, 2005. The normal high temperature for this time of year in Vegas is 103 degrees.

A cruise to anywhere would be nice for anyone in this heat wave...

Just read about the utterly tragic loss of the Arizona firefighters. So heartbreaking to see the a group of such fine young people lose their lives while fighting to keep others safe. May they rest in peace...

Must have been awful conditions for him at work.

Hope he stays safe.

I just heard about those brave firefighters on the news a short time ago. My heart breaks for that their families, friends and their community. What an awful loss.
