aeegee Posted September 17, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Can someone please tell me when they think the muster drill would be if a ship leaves port at 4:30 from FLL? I'm asking because we're trying to plan a Sail Away for our CC group and don't know if we should meet at 4:30 when the ship sails or after muster. Can anyone just give me an idea of what they think. For the life of me I can't remember if we had muster before we sail away or not. Thanks

aeegee Posted September 17, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted September 17, 2013 They do it before you sail I was going to say that we are sailing with Celebrity, but I don't think it matters. Thank you for answering so quickly.
Rare Scrapnana Posted September 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Usually, it is about an hour before sailing.
navybankerteacher Posted September 17, 2013 #5 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Every ship I've sailed (including a couple of Celebrity ships) has muster drill before sailing - so a get together for sailaway would work. Of course, all the topside bars will be busy just then.
Rare Hlitner Posted September 17, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 17, 2013 Like the last poster said, it will be held about 1 hour before the scheduled sailing and the drill will last about 20-25 min. So passengers usually have plenty of time after the drill to get ready for the sailaway. Since the Costa Concordia incident all muster drills are done before sailing and attendance is truly mandatory. Fail to show up at the drill and you will likely be thrown off the ship. Of course, all the topside bars will be busy just then. New rules now require muster drills BEFORE the ship departs on your first day. This rule is a direct result to the Costa Concordia disaster, where several hundred people had not had their muster drill yet due to the unique nature of this itinerary where people could begin their cruise in any of several different ports. The drill had been scheduled for the next morning, but the accident happened shortly after they boarded. You say that the ship departs at 4:30. Are you sure that is the departure time and not the time you need to be on board, which by law must be 90 minutes prior to departure, and would allow enough time for the drill? Yes, departure is at 4:30. We are always on the ship early and do know about the 90 minutes. I just couldn't remember what time muster as. It's a good idea to have it and get it over with. Things happen. Thank you for your response.
Gunner22aa Posted September 18, 2013 #13 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Not sure about Celebrity as it has been a few years since my last trip with them but on Princess they check you in to muster drill by swiping your card. They refused to start our briefing until all who were assigned our muster station, the Vista Lounge were accounted for. We had two couples who decided to skip the drill. The staff went and fetched them while a couple of hundred people sat and waited. They didn't receive a warm welcome from the rest if us when they arrived and we started the briefing almost half an hour late. It has always been prior to the sail away which we almost missed due to our inconsiderate shipmates.

In that situation those passengers who hide from muster drill and are caught should be escorted to the gangway, reunited with thier luggage and bid a fond farewell as the ship sails away. Zero Tolerance! I know there are those who lurk around here proudly bragging about skipping muster or saying they have sailed so many times they no longer need to attend.

I don't remember our Celebrity cruise, but on our Princess cruise we had to bring our life vests to the muster drill with us - you might want to give your guests time to take them back to their cabins if vests are required. I still pay attention to the flight attendants at the start of every flight:)

Often, when people are planning the type of CC Sail Away you're doing, they will just say to meet after the muster drill and not give an exact time. Have fun at yours! :) LuLu ~~~~
jdvmd Posted September 18, 2013 #17 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Why not just tell your roll call that you all will meet up immediately after the muster drill? We have done this on several Celebrity roll calls and it worked just fine. As long as you have a meeting place and someway to identify one another. Rufferto Posted September 19, 2013 #18 Share Posted September 19, 2013 On Oasis in 2011 my DD was fast asleep in the cabin. It was time for drill. We were going to wake up my DD but my cabin steward said only one of us needed to go so my DD could still sleep. I stayed in the cabin while my DW went to drill. When the seven blasts went off I thought my ears would pop. It is soooo loud! Would you believe that my DD slept through it!? I doubt very much that we would be allowed to skip it next time, post Concordia.
alcpa1 Posted September 19, 2013 #19 Share Posted September 19, 2013 On our last Celebrity cruise (March, '13) we did NOT bring our life vests. All passengers were checked off as they entered their designated stations. Those who missed the drill were required to attend a make up. We were sailing from a foreign port and there were some late arrivals permitted to board. We did a little get together near the Mast Bar after the drill but those with early seating barely had time to stop by and wave. We also sailed at 4:30. aeegee Posted September 19, 2013 Author #20 Share Posted September 19, 2013 Thanks all. I have done what you mentioned and told our CC group that we'll meet after muster. Hopefully we won't have any late folks and those that have an early dining time will still be able to stop by. I'm sure your answers will help others who have questions about the muster drill. Thanks again.
