As a smoker I think that is quite a reasonable solution but I would hope that in times when the decks are closed due to wind smokers would be allowed into the casino to smoke regardless of whether they are gambling or not. That would work.

I could easily live with that, but would have different preferences:

I would like there to be exactly two smoking areas, one indoor and one outdoor.

 

I would like either the requirement to be gambling while smoking in the Casino be eliminated, or (better yet), have a designated indoor space, with adequate venting to the outdoors, for indoor smoking. That space would be available all the time, and not just when the Casino is open.

The Oak Room was the best thing that ever happened to indoor smoking on the ships that had them, but those were all taken away. :( They should be returned and/or added to every ship.

 

I do not like smoking on the promenade deck. At all. I remember a cruise to Alaska when I wanted to sit out there several hours at a time, most every day. There was someone smoking a cigar (it was within the rules), and the smell came right to me. Walking forward of him was difficult for me; it just added more painful steps each time I went out. :mad:

 

There should be a smoking area in a clearly designated area by the aft pool. No moving of ash trays, except under one specific circumstance (and this would get very confusing):

On the Maasdam earlier this year I went to the aft pool to enjoy the great outdoors. There were people smoking in the designated smoking area, so I had no problem with that. The problem was the direction of the wind---the smoke was blowing my way. I could not enjoy being out there, and had to leave.

So, I would like the outdoor smoking area to switch sides depending on direction of the wind. That would be identified by large HAL signs that can be moved by appropriate crew, but attached in such a way that passengers can't move them. I know that is confusing, complicated, and would be difficult to administer as the wind and ship are known to change direction.

Nowhere would be the logical answer in an ideal world as on airplanes, public transportation and many public areas in too many places too numerous to list both indoors and out.

 

Since I am not a ship's architect it would be presumptuous of me to designate

an arrea on all 15 of HAL's ships. I'm sure it can be done since Celebrity, Princess, and RCI are doing it.

 

HAL has a 140 year history in the cruise industry. She certainly has as many if not more resources to solve the problem than her younger sisters have.

 

Finding a place for smokers to self pollute is indeed a secondary issue since smoking is a proven health risk to all who are exposed to it.

 

It is HAL!s responsibility to insure the well-being and comfort of her guests, not mine. It is HAL's responsibility to find that place on all 15 of her ships.

I agree that smoking on the Promenade is not ideal. We like to walk in the mornings and coming around the corner to the smoking area certainly made our 5K walks in the fresh air not so fresh.:cool:

Still very limited for smokers and I have no desire to perch on a stool in a casino. I expect to be able to sit somewhere comfortable to have a drink in the evening. We pay the same amount as non-smokers for our cruise so should therefore have access to comparable facilities.

Yes, HAL will be known as "The Smokers' Cruise Line". There goes their signature of excellence!

 

 

What "Signature of Excellence"? These are just pretty words, not deeds. HAL is pretty much on a par with most other cruiselines, no worse and no better.

When you do something that is noxious to others, IMO, you should expect to have somewhat fewer choices. When you do something the vast majority are unhappy with, though it is allowed , because it is so unpleasant for many, there is a price.

With all respect, you do not HAVE to smoke. You have the choice to join everyone else in the comfort of whatever lounge and not smoke.

You have entirely missed the point. How long would I be in a restaurant? The average flight I do is around 13/14 hrs NOT two weeks!

Says who? Maybe for other smokers, that's it. I enjoy the company of people who don't continually have to leave to have a smoke, and drop their butts all over the place (the world is their ashtray) and let's not go into the more unpleasant aspects of breath and clothing smells.

 

I have no wish to attack smokers and I always advocate for somewhere comfortable for them to be able to indulge in their habit, but that statement shows a level of ignorance that can't be ignored, as it implies that only smokers are fun to be around, and that definitely is not true. You can only speak for yourself, not generalise in this way.

Just wanted to say, you are not alone in swearing to not read/respond to this subject, and break that vow over and over again. And ya know what? The arguments pro and con are the same, Over and Over again.... But now they are more entertaining, because I refuse to get any more involved than this one post:)
