bigeck Posted December 21, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 21, 2013 (edited) When doing a transatlantic from Spain, which side is better port or starboard? I would say port side from Europe and starboard from Usa. That's what we have booked Edited December 21, 2013 by bigeck

Brit-Cruiser Posted December 21, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 21, 2013 When doing a transatlantic from Spain, which side is better port or starboard? We were portside last month on our Transatlantic from Barcelona. We got the sun on our balcony from sunrise to sunset. We loved it. :)
TravelerThom Posted December 21, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 21, 2013 When doing a transatlantic from Spain, which side is better port or starboard? Port will be the sunny side...in the fall. While it is true that port is the sunny side in the fall, it is also the sunny side in the winter, spring and summer assuming that you are headed in a direct routing to the US. Spain is north of the Tropic of Cancer as is Florida - the sun zenith is never north of that Tropic.

Rare Hlitner Posted December 22, 2013 #9 Share Posted December 22, 2013 We have done many TAs (probably 20) and the only factor on choosing a side would be the sun. You need to consider the time of year and your own habits. Some folks prefer to have their balcony in the shade during breakfast time so they can enjoy breakfast on their balcony without sun in their eyes. Others want shade in the afternoon, or perhaps they want the sun so they can watch sunsets. Your itinerary also can make a difference since it does effect the ship's course and sun location. Topo Gigio Posted December 22, 2013 #10 Share Posted December 22, 2013 A couple of weeks ago, I had a balcony on the starboard side and didn't notice that much sun, but I guess it was more weather related. Btw it doesn't make that much difference for me since I live in the Caribbean.
mjldvlks Posted December 22, 2013 #11 Share Posted December 22, 2013 The sun/shade thing is just a matter of preference. As stated above, at the latitudes these cruises travel, the sun will be slightly south of straight overhead. Add to that, the fact that most TAs travel generally on an east/west line for most of the cruise. For this reason, for most of the cruise, The port side will be shaded on an east bound cruise and the starboard side on a west bound cruise. To demonstrate, here us a midday picture taken from our port side deck 9 balcony on an eastbound Independence TA: The shadow of the ship is clear to see on the water. Not a big deal, but if you want bright sun for most of the day, eastbound - starboard, westbound - port.

Mark_K Posted December 22, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 22, 2013 Port out, starboard home when sailing from Europe to USA that is so be POSHBack in the day, it would have been the other way around. Ships sailed all year, and weren't air conditioned. The preferred cabins were those in the shade. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app
mjldvlks Posted December 22, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) Plus the POSH chestnut, if true (which is doubtful) was based on travel frm Britain to India which is opposite of TAs. Rare DragonOfTheSeas Posted December 22, 2013 #15 Share Posted December 22, 2013 Had a port cabin on our recent TA. It was perfect. We were not diamond so we sat on our balcony in the evening for wine. We could see the sunset--but, it did not get in our eyes.
