Gratuities

I am trying to figure out how much American money I will need for my trip. We are going on Baltic 11 day cruise, however we get off the ship around 8 am. Do we have to pay gratuity for that day? Or are the cruise lines double dipping and two sets of people are paying gratuity for that day--those leaving and those getting on?

It is based on per night spent and it is automatically added to your stateroom's account. It is a set amount per person per room. I do not recall the exact amount as it varies on the type of stateroom.

You can liquidate that amount by paying cash at the front desk if you wish.

I found this information on Princess' WEB site:

During your cruise, regardless of which Princess ship you choose, you will meet staff who provide you with excellent service. Crew members often rotate to different vessels within the Princess fleet which helps to maintain our high standards on every ship. These dedicated workers reflect our philosophy that all crew on all ships are but one family who share in our success.

To simplify the tipping process for our passengers, a discretionary gratuity of $12 per person for mini-suites and suites, and $11.50 per passenger in all other staterooms per day (including children) will be automatically added to your shipboard account on a daily basis. This gratuity will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including all waitstaff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, and housekeeping staff across the fleet. For your convenience, this gratuity can be pre-paid before you sail by calling 1-800 PRINCESS and referencing Special Services item number 0597. Pre-paid gratuities may be added up to 6 days prior to your departure.

A 15% gratuity is added to bar charges and dining room wine accounts. This is shared amongst the beverage staff and their support staff. We know you will find these services onboard exemplary.

Casino dealers and Lotus Spa® personnel do not share in these gratuities, as not all passengers utilize these services.

It is best to think of gratuities as a "per night" basis. e.g. a 7 day cruise actually has 7 nights, but spans Saturday - Saturday (8 calendar days). On your Passenger Folio they are billed by the $$NIGHTMGR, usually very early in the A.M.

Princess Cruises does not double dip for the turnaround day.

The charge is put on your account in the middle of each night. So you pay for the number of nigts. This means you only pay for one of the first and last days, not both.

Assuming you settle your onboard account with a credit card, you would not be paying these gratuities with cash

If you order Room Service, there is a place on the paper you sign acknowledging the delivery where you can add a gratuity, rather than give cash, if you choose to give a tip. It then is put on your account.

Note: room service gratuity is included in the nightly service charge (gratuity) pool, but some of us like to give something additional at time of service.

You do not need U.S. Cash to pay your Hotel Charge, also called the auto tip. US$11.50/ per person/per night will automatically be added to each passenger's on board folio. The amount is US$12.00 if you are in full suite or mini suite. For an 11 night cruise that would be either US$126.50 per person or US$132 per person.

You may wish to tip extra for room service. This amount can be cash or added to your account. We also provide an extra cash tip to our room steward, and to our waiters, if we have traditional fixed seating dining. This could be in US$, but we also have provided them with Euros when we were in Europe. Crew members will accept any hard currency that they can spend or exchange. Just remember that if you provide them with currency other than US$ to add additional amounts to cover the loss when they exchange it.

Previous posts have explained that the gratuity is posted on your account on a daily basis along with all other charges you've accrued.

You can get an update by asking for a copy at the front desk. The simplest way to handle on board charges is to register a credit card pre-cruise in Cruise Personalizer or at check in.

The problem with signing for gratuities on a receipt, is this goes in to the pool and split, if you pay in cash and you automatic gratuity is in affect, then The server can keep the cash. :D

On most ships now you don't have to wait in line at the front desk to see your on board charges. They have a machine next to the front desk that you can use by swiping your room card and, if it's working :), it will print out your charges for you.
