What do you LOVE about the M-class ships?

We have never sailed Celebrity before and currently have a cabin on hold on the Summit. You all seem very passionate about Celebrity and I am really enjoying reading through and searching through previous threads.

I just thought it would be fun to hear all about what some of your favorite things on the M class ships are......

Thanks!

We sailed the Summit last April and are scheduled to sail the Constellation this Fall. I think my 2 favorite things were the Thallasotherapy Pool and the Aqua Spa Cafe. The ships are beautiful, well layed out, and the staff excellent. We could always find a chair by the main pool area and the entertainment was the best we've seen in 15 cruises. If you have specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

We sailed Infinity to Alaska two years ago and Millennium in the Caribbean last December, and have also been on three C-class cruises. I especially enjoy two things on the M-class ships: the little semi-private gazebo-ish seating areas on the deck above the pool deck, and the glass elevators. I try to avoid elevators as much as possible during cruises because walking up and down the stairs is my secret to not gaining weight (since I already have more than enough of it!) -- but I can't resist a few trips in those glass elevators, watching the water while going up or down. -- TR

vs. the other classes of ships? A couple of nice features come to mind:

The Spa grill.

192 sq ft CC cabins (vs. 172 on the other classes of X ships)

AFT CC cabins (even better!). Overall, I like the cabin options better.

Maybe, but the M ships are full of 170 sq ft. standard inside, outside, and balcony cabins, a tad smaller than those on the previous classes of ships.

We have been on all 3 ship classes and like each of them for various reasons. Our family likes Millennium class for their greater array of quad cabin choices (esp the FV cabins) and the large Fun Factory facility.

We (DH) and I love everything about the M class ships,,,,but sadly they took our favorite the Summit out of FLL. and moved it to the west coast:( ....

Well, I do feel somewhat bad that the Summit is not in Florida but I think my happiness that the West coast finally got a quality ship will overcome that feeling. I mean hey, I can drive an hour and a half to Hawaii now. I'm sorry but I can't feel to bad. Florida has always received the most attention from the cruise lines. Come on can't you share the wealth. Doesn't matter. Some like smaller ships, and Benjamins has a preference for smaller. Like you, I like the availability of a choice.

I think Eric meant staterooms. I'm not big on staterooms, Celebrity's standard size is fine with me. I want staterooms that are clean and quiet and close to midship and low. The staterooms on early 90s vintage RCI ships are small for me.

I really don't find the M class ships too big, or even that much bigger than Mercury or Galaxy. What I dislike about them is that they aren't Celebrity hulls but adapted for Celebrity, too much like each other and not showing the creativity and different personalities of Celebrity like the Century ships, lack a promenade deck aft, have too few lounges and too many shops and the lounges that exist feel oversized and corridor-like. Then there are the dining room wings, the hole in the floor that links one lounge to another limiting the different types of music and entertainment one can enjoy if they weren't linked, lack of deck areas that Century class had in front of lido area, and so much more. I think these ships are a step down for Celebrity, feeling very much like commodity ships vs. the more personalized quality of the Century ships. They also seem less contemparary than the Century ships, they had more modern decor in many places (Mercury's Pavilion lounge and casino, for example). The M class ships are inefficient in space compared to ships like NCL Dawn and RCI Radiance, and are my least favorite of ships in this size range.

Now that they are not new, as new is defined in the current cruise market as up to 2 years old, perhaps people will see them for the commodity ships they are. The next version of Celebrity ships have much bigger standard staterooms, for those that find that a priority.

As for choice, I will continue to say choice is about not only multiple choices on a large ship, but choice to sail on a ship built since 2000 for the standard lines that is around 60,000 tons--the standard size of ships just 15 years ago. They don't exist. Glad there's Oceania and hope there are some new cruise lines that will give people the choice to sail in 30,000, 50,000, 70,000, 90,000 ton ships that are replacing ships of that size, and not just 85,000 tons and up. That's not choice.

And really, I'm not interested in business excuses or justifications for lack of choice of under 80,000 tons in new ships. I'm a customer and that's my position.

Drive 1.5 hours to Hawaii??? It is a 5 hour flight from LA. Even a cruiseship doesn't do it in 1.5 hours...... Interisland isn't by car either as no bridges yet. Heard ferries are coming but that's been for 3 years.

The following pics are for Mercury which isn't M class and Infinity which was perfect cruise to Hawaii...the thing about Celebrity is that they are great at providing family feelings to strangers...the service is warm and feels genuine though we know in reality they are performing their jobs to treat us well...to me it's a european attitude that is truer to our human needs than the corporate nice to see attitude most common on other cruiselines...we have cruised rccl princess carnival holland america and still our warmest memories are with celebrity....on a personal note we are aging boomers with dead parents and with children who did not quite 'turn out' as expected they are good people but nothing to brag about...so cruising provides some of those proud warmies about being on earth and feeling like we are somebody...maybe shallow but works for us....

I did over simplify things. I can drive an hour and a half to the ship that will take me to Hawaii. I should probably have said; I can drive an hour and a half to my Hawaii vacation. Since the vacation does start when I get to the ship.

Canderson,:) was that the car that actually turned into a boat?

It was actually both at the same time (with ability to shift the drive), and wasn't a particulary good car or boat! And it's worse than that -- early 60's.

Here's another one (below), but doing it's boat thing instead:

There was also the Amphicar that the Germans were building from '61 to '68 or so, but it was a really homely looking thing... nowhere near as cute (right).

Oh gosh...who is that guy in the picture?

Was there another car that turned into a boat too? I cannot remember the name of it. Don't they say the mind is the first thing to go?

I would love a quality car boat. It would be so much fun and if you miss the ship there is no need to hire a tender.

Eric, this little baby will get you there quicker than that old Amphicar. Not sure you'd ever catch the ship up in one of those.;) It'll do 30mph in water. Now you just need to put your hand in your pocket for the $200,000+ it costs. I think it's a "middle" driving position only, but I don't suppose that matters when you are in the water.:)
