Dinner attire

Dressy jeans have been around for years. Unfortunately Oceania fell into the lowering of standards. It is what it is. However, to men to who enjoy wearing sports jackets - go for it. For people who want to meet the minimum dress standards on Oceania, that is fine as well. Just understand that many people will be dressed up a bit - particularly in specialty restaurants. I'm posting because every time I say that there were many men wearing sports jackets on our cruise last year (up to 50%), I'm told that it isn't true. I was paying particular attention since this was our first Oceania cruise.

Lowering standards? ROTFL.

Just my opinion. I feel that Oceania (specifically the Riviera) is the most luxurious ship we have ever sailed on. Dressing like you would to go to a coffee shop seems like a slap in the face to everyone involved in building such an extraordinary vessel. Again, just my opinion. I do not judge people based on how they dress but do make recommendations in the hopes that people will dress in the most upscale way they are comfortable in. Not suggesting tuxedos or even suits...... just nice lovely clothing to dine in Oceania's upscale restaurants.

I agree with (Pacheco), and I think your out of step with today. You can see a few men in jackets which is nice if they want to wear them and you see a few men in jackets, jackets most men wouldn't wear. Jackets doesn't mean you have good taste by any means-period.

Don't be made to think you need a jacket, if you don't want to wear one.

As my husband often comments when we are in the specialties on Oceania, I threw out a jacket like that 35 years ago. LOL Some of the stuff I have seen people wear is hideous and shows no fashion sense whatsoever (I do not care -- just making the point -- live and let live) but I guess if it's not jeans, standards are still high.

Just go into the great luxury hotels around the world -- from the ST Regis in NY to Raffles in Singapore to the Peninsula in Hong Kong. Folks wear jeans. And they look classy. We are not taking about torn jeans and bib overalls. Jeans are a fashion statement. I guess polyester pantsuits would be fine as they certainly are within the previous guidelines and they are not jeans. Out of step does not begin to describe the comment about "lowering standards."

Thanks all. We do like to dress up in the evenings, but during the daytime I want to be comfortable. I hate the idea of arriving on the boat with a bunch of clothes I won't be able to wear.

Be comfortable and enjoy yourself and above all do not be concerned about the fashion police. They will not be on board. Oceania has a relaxed, casual atmosphere. You will find only a handful of people who are judgmental. Just ignore them.

Size 64 Comfort Fit Lee Jeans are not classy. The problem is convincing the men that wear them of the fact!

FDR is having so much trouble filling his Russian designation tours that he'll probably start allowing sweat pants to dinner if they reserve the trip. The problem isn't the dress, it's giving money to Putin, Inc.

A neither is a 40 year old plaid sport jacket that should have been donated to Good Will.

Can you all get off this "classy" stuff.

We all know it when we see it. Just like porn.

Let people enjoy themselves without passing judgment.

I always laugh at these threads, because people act like the current/most recent fashion "faux pas" (in this case, wearing jeans to dinner) is the biggest crime of fashion ever. Yet, I'll bet none of the complainers really wants to wear black tie every single night and a suit during the day while on board, do they? Because once upon a time that was standard. And I'll bet the first time a ship allowed less formal dress there were people who were up in arms about it...."my God, Louisa, did you see that woman? She wasn't wearing GLOVES. Despicable. Just despicable!" LOL

But times changed then and no one thinks twice about a woman without gloves or a man wearing shorts and a golf shirt to lunch now. And times are continuing to change, and jeans can be very fashionable.

When Oceania starting allowing folks to go without gloves in the GDR is when things really started going downhill. . . . LOL

When jeans and shorts become the allowed normal dinner attire, I'm done with O. Let the casual casual crowd have the boat. See how they fill it.

that simple enough?

How about the May 31st cruise of Fiji on the Paul Gauguin? Very classy ship and a neat itinerary.

Here is their dress code:

"What to Pack -

The ship will be clothing-optional in all areas except the dining rooms, where clothing is required. Shorts and T-shirts are perfectly acceptable dining room attire."

Oops! that cruise is sold out.

You do understand that I wasn't talking about Oceania specifically, but cruising/ocean liner travel in general, and that I was talking about how things have evolved over more than a century, right? ;)

Yes

I loved your post

Mine was tongue in cheek

My mother was a Vogue hat model and a fashion plate. When I was a little girl we lived in Queens and we NEVER went to Manhattan without our white gloves. And my mother always wore a wonderful hat. It is really a lovely memory for me.

My father flew to Europe on business in a prop plane for 14 hours -- wearing a suit and a tie. You dressed up to fly. It was standard. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that was?

My parents were regular theatre-goers -- I recall my mother wearing a black beaded sheath to theatre. My father always wore a suit. in his later years, my father always lamented how those going to the theatre were dressed like "slobs." I told him that the world was changing (he had a hard time with that LOL)

There is no one defining resort casual as sweats or shorts and tank tops at dinner. These folks need to stop worrying IMO.

I remember when people dressed up to fly someplace & wearing a nice suit when going out to a nice restaurant complete with gloves

Wearing a nice dress or skirt & blouse to work

I guess I must be old :(

Well, if more than 6000 views and Ninety plus replies haven't proved anything else, I guess that we can agree that whatever we wear, other people will notice it and......ahem....force themselves to have an opinion.

So, if you can't stand the heat....

What is the sartorial equivalent to "buyer beware"?

Hey WB,

Old New Yorker cartoon:

3 decidedly upper crust about English gentlemen in full soup and fish around a table with candlesticks, wine glasses, etc, while outside, seated on a log in shorts and a bush jacket is another, eating from a tin plate.

"Too bad about that tiger eating Featherstonehaugh's** dinner attire".
