Vision and Navigator cruisers : heads up re Roatan

The article was just posted today.... not sure whether this was common knowledge or not.... very sad for the crew and for the island which no doubt will feel the knock on effect of diminished tourism. One of the islands I've yet to visit.....

Personally I think it is about time for the cruiselines to stop going to this island. There have been way too many crimes and deaths here. It is sad that the island is losing this income, but I would rather be safe and know that my family is safe in port.

I actually called RCCL last week to express my concern about calling on Roatan in Sept. on my Vision cruise. I wish Royal WOULD cancel stops there. While I was originally looking forward to visiting this port, which would be a new one for me, the instances of crime involving tourists and cruise passengers, is unsettling for me. I'd rather go somewhere else. Of course crime happens everywhere, but tourism is the major industry there, and if they don't value it enough to protect their visitors, then I'd rather go elsewhere.

We are in Vision in August and were very much looking forward to this stop as it is one place we have not been to and was specifically the reason why we booked the sailing we did. Have been reading about the latest incident on the Roatan page here on CC. It seems like there was a new "sheriff in town" when this latest incident happened so maybe he can get it calmed down?

 

In the past there have been various ports of call where cruise ship passengers have been attacked (e.g. Nassau). Most have taken to cleaning things up so hoping the same will happen in this case.

 

Will be watching closely what happens in this port.

 

I do agree, the article doesn't say all lines are eliminating the port, just that they do sail there.

As of 5 minutes ago RCCL says they will be still stopping at scheduled port of Roatan for next week's sailing of the Navigator (yes I am booked on this cruise).

They said they will e-mail us if that changes and of course refund the shore excursion that I have booked.

They further said that the RCCL excursions are subject to cancellation by the cruiseline up until the hour of the tour. :rolleyes:

What's the big deal?

Miami Ft Lauderdale are far more dangerous than Roatan!

Should RCCL boycott them?

Then consider Bayonne and Newark areas they make Roatan seem very safe!

 

Have you heard any stories of anybody being murdered at Cape Liberty? Or steps from the cruise pier in Port Everglades?

Yes there are murders several times a year in the Cape Liberty area!

This did not occur within steps of the cruise pier, it was in fact several miles from the cruise pier in a part of the city not frequented by tourists.

There have been warnings for quite some time not to venture into these areas unescorted!

Would you walk alone in the more dangerous areas of any large city in the US and not expect that something could happen?

Please post the stories of murders in Cape Liberty "area". Newark is not considered the Cape Liberty area. And the stories state that the crew member was only a short ways away from the ship. I have not seen any reports that it was considered a dangerous area, but more an area often frequented by crew members. If you've seen reports that it was in a dangerous area, I'd like to see those stories as well.

 

And what about the cruise passengers that were held up while on an excursion? Should those be considered dangerous as well? Give me a break.

Our Navigator cruise last week made the scheduled stop in Roatan. We found a letter on our bed the night before we arrived advising us of the State Department warning and urging us to take precautions to protect ourselves and our belongings during the visit.

 

To me, what happened in Roatan could happen in any city or tourist location in the world. We took our Victor Bodden tour as scheduled and had a fantastic day. I never at any time during our port call felt unsafe or even uneasy.

 

I hope Roatan takes the necessary steps to ensure ships will continue to call there. It's one of my favorite stops because although it's growing rapidly, Roatan is still relatively unspoiled and it's an incredibly beautiful place filled with friendly people.

Roatan is one of our favorite ports. We also did a Victor Bodden Tour and it was perfect. The beaches and water are pristine. The monkey farm is fun. I will be greatly disappointed if Royal decides to stop going there.

 

I would rather Belize be discontinued rather than Roatan. Now that's a scary port-of-call.

The big deal is Honduras is the murder capital of the world since 2010....the big deal is the state department has issued a warning traveling in this area back in December...the big deal is a young man was within steps of the ship and was gunned down over a cell phone....the big deal is I saw the pictures of the young man laying in the road bleeding out with about 50 people standing around gawking. For you to dismiss it as no big deal and to equate it to Fort Lauderdale....is actually kind of sad to tell you the truth. Source (cruiselawnews) (Tiempo local Honduras newspaper)

OK...

 

Went to Roatan last month. Loved it. Would go again. Wouldn't go wandering around by myself. But I wouldn't do that in many places.
