tilt10 Posted April 25, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Went on the Celebrity Solstice in December. One of the reasons we went on this cruise was to play a bit of small stakes poker.. We new the rake would be high. 10% capped at $15. What we did not expect was the pathetic minimum buy- in of $20 on the 1/2. Low buy- ins destroy poker games. The tournaments had a buy in of $60, So why wasn't the min buy- in set at a reasonable level for cash games of $100. Took the gloss off the cruise for my wife and myself. Sack the pit boss. Joke. Then again we could have gone to the vegetable sculpture. Sack the entertainment manager.
jelayne Posted April 25, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Doubt they would have enough players at a $100.

wallie5446 Posted April 25, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Strange? How does someone join CC 3 years ago and have a first comment today? Anyway, we have never seen very many true high stake poker tables with people sitting and playing.
SusieV Posted April 25, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 25, 2014 The tables are often full at $2-$5 with the same rake, $200-$500 buyin. I haven't seen a $1-$2 table on a Celebrity ship in years and I would be very disappointed if I did. Would definitely speak to the pit boss. blueboro Posted April 25, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Not sure why anyone would go on a cruise specifically to gamble. If I am really into that I would go to a real land-based casino.
dingy Posted April 25, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 25, 2014 If one of the reasons you take a cruise is for poker in the Ship's casino, you've done a poor job with your research. If you want a serious game, ask one of the officers where a game can be found. It won't be in the casino. If you are in a suite, your butler may be able to direct you to one. cls711 Posted April 25, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 25, 2014 Not sure why anyone would go on a cruise specifically to gamble. If I am really into that I would go to a real land-based casino. It's a "to each his own" kind of world. My hubby enjoys gambling and vacationing. He definitely cruises to gamble and while he's doing so I have lots of options to keep busy. And because of his enjoyment of gambling we've been cruising relatively "free" for years. And I know many are thinking....well you ""pay" for the cruise in the long run by losing in the casino. Sure we've lost a little, but we've won a little more and we break even a lot and I consider that a win on a free cruise! On the other hand, I'm not a shopper. I could easily say "Why would anyone go on a cruise to shop? If I liked to shop that much I'd go to an outlet mall." But many, many cruisers' main objective and entertainment on a cruise is shopping. To each his own! :)

My wife gets me to go on cruises because I can gamble. Nothing else is of any interest anymore after being on so many cruises. I only go now to shut her up. I am your worst nightmare on those types of tables. I buy in and chip away until I am up about $100.00 and cash out and jump back in with another $20.00 buy-in. It takes the wind out of the high stakes players as one can always challenge an all in push as you never risk much cash on the line to make the call. Makes it very hard for players to bluff if they push all in with $200.00 and one player calls with a $15.00 all in just to see your cards. The games are more for time diversion then making large money. Edited April 25, 2014 by baldercash
SusieV Posted April 25, 2014 #17 Share Posted April 25, 2014 The games are more for time diversion then making large money. Gotta tell you... it's not true. My husband and I joke if we wouldn't get hideously fat, we could cruise for free all the time. The poker players are much weaker than in a typical casino. Yes, the rake is high, but as long as we stay away from the blackjack tables we usually win in the four figures a week playing poker on cruise ships. tilt10 Posted April 26, 2014 Author #20 Share Posted April 26, 2014 Well said C.P.J. Yes i do have other things to do besides post on this site hence my infrequent posts. Yes poker is one of my hobbies. Terrible isn't it. Vegetable sculpture is not. I went on the Solstice out of Auckland to Sydney. Great boat and ports. Got an email from Carnival about the size of their games prior to booking. I wrongly assumed as Celebrity was a better boat would run games of the same size or higher. The pit boss told me that the same boat runs 2-5 out of Alaska. So why do we have to play smaller games than any casino i have ever been in. Plenty of Americans on this boat The cash games stated at about 10 pm each night. A deliberate move by Celebrity.Combined with the low buy in i am not surprised at the lack of interest. Nothing wrong with a 1-2 if min buy in is 100bb . Of course i will be writing to Celebrity to suggest they raise their buy- ins.
