When on Millie recently we noticed 3 things which alarmed us greatly

3) Security, when getting on/off the ship in ports, took our cards to put into the readers. Sometimes , depending who was on security, they would allow the passengers to do it - others didnt. Some that didnt, wore gloves to do this, which would protect them, but would still transfer from card to card - everyone that went off ship had to do this - how to spread to everyone within an hour - see security ! We informed the hotel manager about this and he did say they were going to change the procedure - but it never happened.

This is a great point, that I have made to various officiers. It makes no sense for me to hand my card to security after they touch everyone elses card. What better way to pass anything and everything from everyone else. I scan my own card, always.

Not much I can do about bar service, except hope they are washing their hands often, but that matters more than just my key card. We still have the issue of bar servers touching multiple cards and passing them on, but there again, short of looking at the card without touching it, and writing the numbers down, there is not much that can be done and I'm not saying we should, as there are precautions that in my mind, are just not worth the hassle.

Happy sailing,

Jenna

Simple! I asked one of the guys onboard and read the label. The type of sanitiser they use on board is completely different from the type available to the public in shops. Even sadder I bought a batch of it from a specialist healthcare supplier for use at home :)

If there are no US ports it does not have to be reported.

According to CDC if ship is arriving within 15 days at a US port, Millie is sailing to Alaska 5/23/14.

Quoting the CDC website: "When 2% or more of the passengers or crew are ill with gastrointestinal illness. This report must be sent at any time the vessel is in the United States or within 15 days of arriving to a U.S. port."

I don't quite understand the intention of your post. The sanitizer they use is probably registered with the regulatory authorities (US EPA in this case) to be effectve in killing Norovirus.

Few disinfectants will do this except for Chlorine based product such as those containing Chlorox or its active ingredient (sodium hypochlorite). The problem with chlorine disinfectants is that they literally stink and must be left on the surface for a fixed amount of time to be effective.

The sanitizers I have seen on ships use hydrogen peroxide and other active ingredients registered for Norovirus control such as those with very specific types of substituted alkyldimethyl ammonium chlorides...................YOU can find these yourself by putting disinfectants for Norovirus in Google or such and see that I have mentioned the main and only classes of product that work as desired.

The intention was to correct the earlier poster who stated the gels are not effective against Noro :)

The only way to prevent getting norovirus is to not put it your mouth. Wash your hands and do not put your fingers in your mouth or on your food.

If the food is prepared properly, utensils sanitized, not touched by infected persons, then the rest is up to you not to put the germs in your mouth. Use a napkin to touch bread, dandwiches and fries for example. If you wash your hands and don't touch your food or mouth, what other passengers do doesn't matter.

Also remember they can clean the ship but if the are many active cases in the port then it will continually be reinvected. So you have to protect yourself and not rely on others.

Thank you for your clarification. I thought you were referring to the disinfectant/sanitizer they use on surfaces and with this additional information I can agree that the gel sanitizers DO NOT replace thorough hand washing and only add a tiny bit of added protection.

It is amazing how many men leave the restroom without washing their hands. On other threads, women have said the same thing about lady passengers in the rest room................that post said that some believe that stroking your hands through your hair is adequate.

Is it surprising that we get infected by our careless fellow men and women passengers that then only use that gel...............or not..........and then head to the salad bar and throw those tongs they handled into the lettuce????? YUCK

You have posted some really GREAT advice. Wash your hands, but NEVER put your fingers in your mouth, eyes or nostrils...........any moist body surface. It is sometime difficult to not pick up that piece of fried chicken or a french fry in the buffet with your fingers............DO NOT DO IT. If you do touch the bread at dinner make sure you have washed your hands, used sanitizer for the small added protection, and then not touched anything else when you do pick up that bread (railings, door handles, chair bottoms or arms, menus, condiment containers that are reused etc. etc.

Although not totally effective as noted by iandjm, using sanitizer just before dining and doing the above provides a bit of added protection if you do the additional things noted above..................cruising is fun but also serious business when others are not doing their part

Friends on Connie now asked to see what is used in the dispensers. They report that it is Purell, alcohol based, no special anti noro ingredients.

This is what they use on Eclipse:

Purell Antiviral Alcohol Gel Refill (1200ml)

That formulation is only available to European markets (see http://www.solucareaide.org/pdfs/PURELL_HAND_SANITISER_WWH.pdf)

Other Celebrity ships in other parts of the world use the regular, clear (not blue) Purell, AFAIK.

It will be interesting to see which version of Purell Eclipse uses when it returns to the Caribbean this fall.
