Are we a good fit for a 10 day cruise?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I are considering the 10 day Southern Caribbean sailing on Legend of the Seas in Jan. 2015 as our belated honeymoon. I have cruised several times before on a number of different lines and he has cruised only Carnival x3. This would be the first RCL cruise for both of us. We are 26 and 30 and are aware that the average age on the longer sailings is much older than ourselves.

We are worried that we will be bored in the evenings. We aren't party people, but we do enjoy things like the comedy shows on carnival and live music. I am not sure what type of shows RCL offers in the main theatre, but we are not fans of what is offered on Carnival. We also aren't big gamblers.

I know the Legend is an older/smaller ship and am also a little worried that because of the lack of extra venues it may not be the RCL experience that we have heard about.

We love the idea of the longer cruise as 7 days just never feels long enough and the ports are great, but we also don't want to be bored or disappointed in the smaller ship.

If anyone has the daily itineraries from a Legend cruise or menus we would love to take a look at some of the activities offered. I haven't had much luck finding anything recent.

Thank you

We just returned from a cruise on Legend. The food was good, but got old during our 24 days at sea. We loved Chops and Izumis, but found one rather glaring drawback. No bathrooms on the same deck as Deck 4 dining room, or Chops and Izumis. My habit is to wash my hands in the bathroom then stroll into the dining room. Something I wasn't able to do on Legend. And I ended up with Norovirus.

We didn't have any trouble finding a place in the Windjammer, but DID have trouble in the Solarium. Because it became a hangout for card players, and we had to go all the way to the Diamond Lounge to find a table.

We don't do the shows, but are seldom bored at night.

Legend does not have a comedy show every night, but there will be some type of show. There are 3 different production shows, and the other nights will have various headliners, such as comedians, singers, jugglers, magicians, etc. Plus the Quest and Love & Marriage.

There will also be a variety of live music around the ship.

We were on Legend for a 13 night transatlantic cruise last year and thought the crew was outstanding.

Do you have to be entertained 24/7 or are you ok with just relaxing. There will be lots of older people. Can you entertain yourself.

We did an 11 day southern on lots last dec. . Great cruise, ship, and crew, but, its not like being on the freedom/oasis class. We are over double your age and at times it was like watching paint dry:p compared to the large ships.

We like vision class if the cruise is right, but otherwise its the big girls for us.

Its hard to beat a southern out of Florida, the ports are great

My wife and I did the 10 Day Southern on Legend for our Honeymoon. It quiets down around the ship by 10-11PM. We had a great time, met nice people, had fun, but it definitely was not as active as other ships and the show times were skewed towards the earlier side, but that may be because we had 5 ports in a row.

I'd go again, like I said we had a great time. But if you want more action and fun at night look for bigger ships.

We typically do a B2B out of San Juan (usually in November/December), and try to alternate the eastern & southern runs. Although we are older than you, we are by no means sedentary, and we usually find that the port-intensive itineraries wear us out during the day! We are in the sun, snorkelling, swimming, walking around (we don't do bus tours) and so forth, and we also do late dinner. On port days we are often so tired that we don't even get to the shows at night!! So, you might want to consider your dining time and your activity schedule during the day. Sea days, of course, are a different story. For our first B2B I wondered if I'd be bored by the time we were into the 2d week, but nothing doing. Now it seems like only 7 days is MUCH too short!

Could you elaborate on what it's like to sail for 24 days? How did you avoid gaining 30 lbs, or did you? Did it get old by the 18th or 19th day? What was your account balance if I may be so impertinent? The longest we sailed was 15 days and by day 12 we were looking forward to getting off

We definitely don't need to be entertained 24/7. We love our sea days to be lazy and relaxing, but we can be night owls and were hoping for a little more activity past 10pm.

We are also considering the 9 night on the Explorer of the Seas. This is a bigger, newer ship with a few more bells and whistles so maybe that would better suit us, however, hubby has his heart set on visiting the baths while stopped in Tortola on LoS.

Any reviews of Explorer? I am hijacking my own thread :)

Walking and not using elevators for a start! And eating healthy. I happen to enjoy salads and fruit and not the sweets. So it is easy for me. Also, pick exactly what you enjoy from the menu. On sea days walk the decks for beautiful views! I haven't gained on a cruise but like I said fresh fruits and veggie are my preference, and there are so many available! I even order fresh berries for desserts for most days. They have been always eager to please.

Explorer of the seas is a wonderful ship. We had a great time while on our 7 day Bermuda cruise. We were in an aft balcony during the rain/wind storm when the Star broke moorings and crashed into us. Very eventful to say the least! A wonderful ship with a great Captain (we sailed Sept 2012)

They will have shows of some sort every evening. You're right that a 10 day cruise will tend to have older passengers....but not EVERYONE will be hobblin' around! You will have plenty of nighttime options.

In reality, RCI is more similar to Carnival than different. The cabins are a bit smaller, but the ship is a better design...that's about it!

If you can manage two weeks I would encourage doing a b2b on one if the larger ships as they will have more entertainment options, both in the theatre and in the lounges. Often the price difference is minimal andthe b2b process is very smooth and simple.

Check my review links in my signature below for 2 Explorer cruises -- first one with my DD, second one with DD and her boyfriend (they had their own cabin!) both around your age. Might give you an idea of what to do on Explorer.

I'm not familiar with Legend, but I don't need the bells and whistles to stay entertained... happy to read, work out, play trivia, attend shows, listen to music, etc.... although when I've traveled with friends I do enjoy closing down the club too!!

Yes on a longer cruise you will definitely find more older folks. Enjoy them! They usually have great travel stories and love to share them if you want to take the time to listen. One of my favorite things about traveling.

Have fun, whatever you decide.

That Legend itinerary is really special - we're booked on it in early Feb, and we booked it onboard the Legend at the same time last year, similar itinerary. One of the terrific aspects of that cruise last year was the very warm community feeling among the pax, from the moment the ship sailed. It just seemed like everyone was in a good mood and ready for a wonderful journey - and of course, it was.

I won't lie. The comment about the location of the restrooms for the MDR on Legend is correct. If you need the potty during dinner, you'll have to take the stairs to another deck - really annoying. No question, the crowd is generally older, probably because working people can't take that much time off work. There were people under forty on the ship, but not many. However, the ports are almost daily after the big sail south, and they are all interesting, with many active excursions available. And other posters are correct. There is always evening entertainment of several kinds, and on our cruise last year the performers were excellent and energetic, outstanding really.

We loved the small intimate feeling of the Legend, and the intinerary was really appealing. But if you want to boogie late at night, there will probably be only a couple of choices. The elders did go to bed early after those interesting days in port.

Wow! What an amazing itinerary ... The Baths in Virgin Gorda, ziplining in St. Kitts, and Levi Baron's Bumpiing tours in Dominica.

What's not to like?

Honestly, I don't find age a factor in the friendships I strike up on board ... and you have a better chance of meeting up more frequently with the same people on a smaller ship. Go for it!

My "problem" (I use quotes because it wasn't a problem) with the Legend was that by 11PM there were only really 3 places with activity going on:

Casino (Stinks, like most casinos)

Schooner Bar (Starting to thin out by then)

And the night club in the Viking Crown Lounge (SIGNIFICANTLY reduced in size with the addition of Chops and Izumi up there.)

That's it really. Did I meet a lot of nice and interesting people and have fun? Yes I did. Do we particularly care the age of others? No, I don't believe we do. There's just simply not a lot of options for night life.

The ports were great, ship easy to get around, good crew, etc, but I actually wrote on my comments "Can we please have entertainment...something, anything, for under 40?" I never heard so much Frank Sinatra on a cruise ship before.

I genuinely believe Explorer would offer a much more lively trip. There's just MORE venues with MORE going on LATER in to the evening. You've got the Royal Promenade with bars and eateries, a dedicated night club, a likely younger crowd overall. This isn't to put down the Legend, like I said it is a great itinerary, good ship, had a good time, etc. but it's just not THAT active. I've been on Explorer twice now and I've had the best overall trips on that ship. Voyager-class is great for giving you a lot of the Wow features and entertainment.

We did 11 night on Legend same itinerary so. carib. Based on your age, I can say you will love the ports, but not the ship. And there is no wow factor on the Legend for it being your first RCI. It would be nice if you could do a Freedom class, but the next best thing would be take the Explorer. The promenade is very nice, the fitness center is awesome, there are many wow factors on this bigger than Legend ship. I've been on many of the Explorer sister ships, just not her yet.

In Jan/Feb 2014, we spent 21 nights on Legend, doing the 10 night and the 11 night B2B. RC does have the 70's & 80's party which was very well attended, and as another poster stated, several of the shows were very good. We don't usually do the shows, but we did several of them, and they were very good.

The Legend has been redone recently, and they have added Chops restaurant, Izumi restaurant, and Park West cafe. They also had live music by the pool during the day on sea days, and for a sailaway party from several of the ports.

We have also sailed Explorer twice. For me, I would take the longer cruise, and go for the one with the ports that are most important to me. With either cruise, you will have a wonderful time.

I think I'd be reluctant to go to the Park West cafe!;):D
