No smoking on Carnival so switched to NCL

My husband smokes. I quit awhile ago, and am a bit of a pain about it since I quit because I developed asthma. At home my husband smokes in his man-cave, which has a door and an expensive air system I bought, and no where else in the house. On cruises, I love to gamble, and I love to sit on the balcony and read. But the smoke in the casinos has prompted a few asthma attacks - so i try to play early morning or late evening when it empties out - and I admit my husband's smoke sometimes bothers me on cruises when we are both out on the balcony. I bought a high powered tiny tiny rechargeable fan. It is like 4 by 4 inches. When he is smoking and I'm out there, I put the fan on the table behind him, aim it out toward the ocean, and everything is fine. I've asked my neighbors on both sides whether they can smell the smoke when I put on the fan (to make absolutely sure I'm not blowing it toward them) and they have always said they could not smell anything. Problem solved.

My fiance has smoked on our balcony, BUT! If he knows there are people sitting on their balcony, he will not light up! There is a difference from someone smoking one or two a day..then someone sitting and lighting up non-stop! I'm not a smoker, and I'm sick and tired of people complaining over and over again about passengers smoking...lets complain about rude people in the shops, rude people by the pool, rude people cutting in line, people complaining about everything while on-board...give me a break, you're on vacation...stop worrying about everyone around you...and have a good time!!

People do complain about plenty of things including rudeness on the part of cruise staff and fellow passengers and those people who are excessively disruptive or rude can, and often are, dealt with on an individual basis. It is difficult, if not impossible, to "have a good time" when they are being treated rudely or are being assaulted by second-hand smoke. However in the ranking of impacts on one's enjoyment of a cruise, the health problems assocaited with second-hand smoke are more serious and the only way to effectively deal with them is to limit the areas where smoking is permitted. This is what Carnival is doing and many other lines have already done. The likelihood that many or most of those threatening to leave a cruiseline because of its smoking policy, obviously doesn't rise to the level of serious concern on the part of Carnival or the other cruise lines. Smokers are decreasing in numbers and the lines are recognizing that fact so expect that other lines will eventually follow those lines where smoking is banned or at least restricted to limited sections of the ship. On ships where smokers congregating in the casino to smoke but not gamble is becoming an increasing issue, I suspect that something will be done to deal with this problem.

What I find most interesting is that Holland and NCL, which still both allow balcony smoking, both have a very high number of European cruises, and of course, smoking is still so much more prevalent in Europe. I wonder whether the high number of European itineraries has impacted the decision so far to continue to permit smoking on balconies and in casino on those lines. I also wonder whether they might eventually make different rules for US port departures vs. European port departures....

Advice-

When attempting to make someone appear "low class", it is wise to use proper grammar.

I am usually not snarky. I just do not see the need for your post.

Thank you 😄. Would not have seen the original response without you quoting it

I'm more of a Target shopper anyway 😜

If one of my loved one's had asthma, there is no way on earth I would continue a habit that puts their health in jeopardy, let alone having put put a fan around you so you can enjoy each other's company. That would be enough for me to quit also.

Such a strong addiction. Sad.

Oh no! Is NCL becoming a smoker's paradise

Welcome aboard Carnival cruisers. You can bring cigarettes but NO dancing waiters!

(shhhhhh but if you can sneak in a few desserts...all the better)

Not to worry other than the casino and cigar bar the entire indoors is smoke free

We are able to enjoy the nightclubs on Ncl where we could not on ccl

We don't get a balcony anyway and the open air smoking on deck is separate anyway.

But the beauty of allowing balcony smoking is that the smokers use the balcony a lot thus keeping them away from civilization.

For those smokers who will now say they will smoke on the lido that's great but you still have to stay on your side not mine.

Remember, not all smokers are inconsiderate. If you are on the balcony next to me and say that it bothers you I will do my best to accommodate you.

Now, if you lead off with telling me I should quit, or that I am nasty, or that I stink or some other rude comment I might not work so hard at being accommodating, but that is just human nature.

Just like if I asked someone who was being loud to please quiet down - if I ask nicely, they are likely to do just that, if I am an ass about it, they will probably hire a 10 piece mariachi band to play until dawn!

I am not on a ship to ruin anyone's vacation, but I am there to try to enjoy mine.

Could everyone coming over from Carnival, due to the new Smoking Policy, please state the particulars of new NCL cruise, Ship & Date, would be great? I'd like to be able to avoid them if there's multiple cabins on the same sailing? Of course your cabin number would be great too.

Thanks. :p

Actually why don't YOU put your info out there so I can know what room not to book, I prefer to like my neighbors

We too are considering switching after many Carnival cruises. Not just the smoking, but the decline in our cruise service/food/shows combined. Please assure me I am making the right decision to switch to Norwegian.

We just got off the NCL Dawn and I can tell you that the food was much better on Carnival as was the wait staff.

I will be one of the strange ones...I only smoke when I drink. I go months without smoking. I admit that I want a ciggy on a cruise and loved one on my balcony but I can adjust to what is okay now!! Smoking is not going to make or break my cruise!

Just got off the phone with NCL and all balcony rooms are going to be non smoking as of November 1st. They also said they are changing the areas where you can smoke outside. I did have a reservation on the Getaway.

Better jump back to Carnival.....

What about smoking on the ship?

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

So much for the much-feared invasion of NCL by Carnival smokers. Seems to me the handwriting is on the wall and can't expect that HAL will continue with its smoking policy unchanged for much longer..

I actually canceled an NCL cruise for January 2015 because of the smoking policy. I wish they made the announcement when Carnival did as I may not have canceled. The last thing I wanted was a boatload of Carnival smokers on my cruise. Oh well, Princess is getting my business.

I'm an ex-smoker but my husband is a smoker. We will also be switching to NCL. Actually I have always wanted to try NCL but I just didn't want to lose the perks (although minor) of being a repeat cruiser on Carnival. But now, unless NCL brings out a no smoking on the balcony policy, we'll soon be NCL Latitude members :) If NCL institutes no smoking on balconies then I guess we will go back to AI vacations only.
Like you, I have cancelled two upcoming cruises on Carnival. Switching to NCL and HAL until they implement similar policies. Then it's back to land-based vacations.

Carnival is allowing cancellations with full refunds no matter what the published cancellation policy is.

Yep, carnival just lost a booking of 5 balcony suites, hello Norwegian.

You probably jumped ship too soon. NCL is set to ban balcony smoking as of 11/1/14.

While everyone is enveloped in their glee at the misfortune of others, I would like to put a point out here for consideration.

Let's use the NCL Epic as our baseline. It holds 4100 passengers. Cruise lines like to say only 10% of cruisers are smokers, but since their poll seemed to miss a majority of people on this website I am going with the 34% who responded on CC. So, just for arguments sake that would be 1394 passengers on the Epic if it is sold out.

Hmmmm, 1394 people with only 2 areas of the ship to smoke. I hope all the non smokers truly are enjoying their balconies because the pool deck is about to get super crowded and a bit smoky :p
