DeeniEncinitas Posted September 8, 2015 #51 Share Posted September 8, 2015 The Dive In sauce IMO is good, but we put it on the side. I love a good burger on occasion, and while on our cruises we will have a burger. We were surprised when one of the staff who were taking orders heard how I would love just to have a lettuce wrap burger with out the bun like at "In and Out" chain. When my husband was ready to order he asked would your wife like it in a lettuce wrap? WOW! Made my day. Denise:)
frankc98376 Posted September 8, 2015 #52 Share Posted September 8, 2015 I have to admit that I don't remember the last time I ate at a McDonalds. I do like the sauce and make it at home from time to time. The best recipe I have found is the one that Sail posted a link to earlier in the thread. bonvoyagebites Posted September 8, 2015 #53 Share Posted September 8, 2015 When we went to the Dive in on our 3-day Amsterdam cruise, I was already so stuffed from Breakfast or Lunch or something, that I didn't have room to really even enjoy... SO I honestly don't recall the sauce. I have a few pictures of the burger and fries and one of the hot dogs on a blog post, but cannot see the sauce in them. I've been trying to shed a few pounds so when I see the pics of the food, I definitely start salivating!

Tennessee Titan Posted September 8, 2015 #55 Share Posted September 8, 2015 You CAN ALWAYS have it without sauce, but I guess, for some, it is more fun to complain about it....

Well, we are mostly vegan so Don's doesn't work for us - but I have to confess an addiction to their French fries. Even in my meat days, I didn't like burgers and I never warmed up to the special sauce...

Harry1954 Posted September 9, 2015 #59 Share Posted September 9, 2015 DW and I have been very disappointed in the new Dive In approach. We have patiently used it on our last few cruises, but do not see what is so great. Some points: a) waiting in line allows one to engage other PAX in a social way rather than sitting at a table solo; b) the food was truly 'greasy spoon' which is a bit old fashioned but tasty; c) the hot dog bun was there to complement the hot dog, not to over power it and create a carbo trip; d) the mustard/ketchup dispensers allowed one to get what they wanted/needed efficiently - now one has to describe in English to non-native-English folks what is desired; e) getting chopped onions for hot dogs or slices of onion for food was much easier; f) I HATE DIVE IN but am learning to tolerate. harry

I don't see what is so great. I had a Big Mac a couple of days ago. I bet I haven't had one in 20 years. I don't know why people love those either. I'm not a burger person. rkacruiser Posted September 9, 2015 #61 Share Posted September 9, 2015 To each his own, and there is nothing wrong with that! I do like properly prepared burgers and I do patronize McDonald's from time to time (far less frequently than I used to; the Company has some issues that are causing sales to decline with consistency of product being one.) One of the features of Dive-in I really appreciate it the use of pagers. I can place my order, go into the Lido Restaurant and obtain whatever else I want, find a table, and still be aware of when my sandwich is ready for pick-up. Far better use of time than standing around waiting for the sandwich to be produced.
OlsSalt Posted September 9, 2015 #62 Share Posted September 9, 2015 Different strokes, that is for sure - love the new Dive-In messaging system and love their new take on french fries. Great improvement over the former cumbersome way it used to be run for those who find standing in line not a thing of joy. Also feel the food choices have been refreshed and far more tasty. But then we are burger fans. This is fast food that is finally a lot faster and tastier, but does not pretend to be anything else. The Slice on the aft-deck for pizza was the clinker for us, unless one likes congealed pizzas kept too long under a heat lamp.
zackiedawg Posted September 9, 2015 #63 Share Posted September 9, 2015 Some question what the big deal is - and in the greater scheme of things, there isn't a big deal...but I praised the dive-in burgers - with or without the sauce in question - mostly because I compare the burgers to what came before on HAL ships. I considered them easily the most atrocious, tasteless, dried, charcoal briquette hockey pucks I had ever had the unfortunate experience to taste, and avoided the burgers on these ships like the plague itself for many years. When I went on my first ship with the Dive In makeover, I was very hesitant to try - figuring just a fancy sauce on the same dense, tasteless, overdone piece of low quality meat wasn't going to help anything - I ended up very pleasantly surprised to find the meat better cooked, higher quality, juicier, and just better in every way - the bun better, the toppings better - it went from inedible and worst-on-the-oceans to a quite decent burger. I tried a few of their styles including the high dive and the cannonball and both were quite good - and the hot dogs got much better too with Nathans dogs being supplied. I didn't try the chicken options, but intend to on my next cruise on Westerdam. Now if they'd just change the horrible, cardboard, frozen, tasteless pizzas! ;) As for the dive in sauce in question in the original post - I was of the opinion it was a mayo & ketchup base, with fairly heavy dose of relish and a mix of mustard. I don't like mustard much, but liked the dive in sauce - but sometimes I opted to go without it just to change up the flavor a bit.

The Italian oriented station in the Lido Restaurant produced a satisfactory slice of pizza for me. Usually. And, even then, there were "misses". But, hey, I am not on an Italian crewed ship. Yes. You will notice in my comment that I said it was "satisfactory". Does not compare to the best of the pizzas available in my area, to be sure. dakrewser Posted September 10, 2015 #67 Share Posted September 10, 2015 Am I the only one who liked the old burgers?? Sure, they were well done, but decent size, a bit of grease, a grilled bun. Just add mustard! Didn't like the hot dogs, but that was because the bun was too big. And the fries were just so-so. As was the pizza. But it was quick, and filling. A good choice after returning from a morning excursion. I look forward to trying Dive-in in November, but am a little apprehensive about folks praise of the "special sauce" a la Mickey D's. rjrpar Posted September 10, 2015 #68 Share Posted September 10, 2015 Just returned today from the Volendam. Like many above, found the sauce to be very average, like most cruise ship food. Not worth making at home.

I like to make coney dogs; however, it takes a little work. i.e. You get a cup of bolognese sauce from the pasta bar, and some shredded cheese from the taco bar; and add it to the hot dog. It makes a real good coney dog.
RuthC Posted September 10, 2015 #71 Share Posted September 10, 2015 ... the new burgers are ok, but as I said before, i prefer waiting in line and getting what I want. I'm able to get the burger I want at Dive-In. I check the board more for the ingredients in all the various concoctions, and decide which ones I want. Then I have them build me the burger the way I want it. So long as they have the ingredients, and there's no price involved, there's no good reason they can't give me exactly what I want. Ask, and it shall be granted! :D

Many times I just went up and placed my order for a plain burger with cheese and nothing else...got my pager, relaxed a few minutes until my order was called, and got the burger exactly the way I wanted. You can still custom order from plain meat on bread to any of their specialty burgers or sandwiches on the board, and can still go to the taco bar and add your own extra toppings if desired. For me, the meat is just higher quality and juicier, and fresher...and the bread better quality and less stale than before. If you don't like the High Dive or Cannonball, just ask for a plain cheeseburger - or high-dive minus the sauce if you want the lettuce - or cannonball minus the sauce and fried onion crumble if you want the cheese and grilled onions. Lots of options.

ToffeeShoppe Posted March 1, 2017 #75 Share Posted March 1, 2017 It has been awhile since I started this thread and I still want the recipe for the sauce. Does anyone have the real deal? Thanks! I was on the MS Zuiderdam last week for the Panama Canal cruise and tried the dive in sauce on the side. At first, I thought it had a mustard flavor, but the color is definitely pink, not yellow. Then after trying it again, I'm convinced that it's BBQ sauce mixed with mayo and will try recreating it at home.
