acegolfer25 Posted October 23, 2014 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2014 I read a few posts implying devices can communicate with each other using ship wifi network (without paying). I hope they are correct.

paul929207 Posted October 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted October 23, 2014 Do we have any dates on a roll out? I don't believe Princess has said more than it will be rolled out over 2015.
Thrak Posted October 23, 2014 #9 Share Posted October 23, 2014 The announcement also says it will be available for download from the regular Apple and Android stores. I looked around yesterday and I don't see it available for download yet.
Loonbeam Posted October 23, 2014 #10 Share Posted October 23, 2014 It's not out yet. It will be on the Regal next month and they will probably release the app then. See other active threads regarding Ripple (short answer, it don't work)

wrongwaywatson Posted October 23, 2014 #12 Share Posted October 23, 2014 I have mixed feelings about this. While it would be nice to message my husband to meet me somewhere(when I'm at the pool and he is wandering the ship), part of being on a cruise is DISCONNECTING. In my sales job and also in my Beachbody business, I am connected all of the time. I am always answer emails, texts, phone calls etc. I also don't want to hear other people's phones DINGing. I have no intention of using the app to keep in touch with my wife or anybody else. I'm more looking forward to implementation of the system that lets me check my onboard folio, the patter, etc. I still don't see myself carrying my phone around the ship. I generally turn it off and stick it in the safe but being able to check things on the TV (or sometimes on the phone) sounds good. I agree that I don't want to have to listen to people's obnoxious ringtones or alerts.
2wheelin Posted October 23, 2014 #14 Share Posted October 23, 2014 Anxious to hear how this works on the Regal and how soon it will be available on the Royal. Hate running back to the cabin for notes.
Buddy604 Posted October 24, 2014 #15 Share Posted October 24, 2014 Even without the messenger service, you can communicate peer-to-peer over the local wifi without logging in to the Internet. If you're using an iOS device, once you've connected to the network, tap the little blue i in the circle next to the network name, then in the settings that appear select auto join as on and auto login as off. That way it will stay on the wifi even if you haven't logged into the Internet. On one cruise I ran a voip switchboard (PBX in a Flash) in a virtual machine on my laptop and my travel buddy and I each ran the Groundwire voip client on our cellphones. We could call each other or leave messages just to let each other know where we were. Nowadays, it just seems like too much work for "I'm at the buffet, wanna join me?" and "Nah, I'll just stay in the casino visiting my long lost money." Loonbeam Posted October 24, 2014 #16 Share Posted October 24, 2014 As more people do this, the IT folks have been fairly diligent about blocking unauthorized services. Shadow205 Posted October 24, 2014 #18 Share Posted October 24, 2014 "The award-winning Princess@Sea mobile app debuted aboard Royal Princess in 2013 giving guests the ability to check the day’s events and activities, review the ship’s itinerary and port guides, browse restaurant menus and even access their stateroom account." So is all they have to do on the Royal to add the messenger to the existing app? If so then maybe they will have it up and ready by our cruise on 01/28. I would enjoy the convenience of the messenger to locate DH without looking all over the ship. I know that we are not going to be spending every minute with each other for 20 days lol. I think the app would make it easier to enjoy individual interests. As far as annoying other passengers, that is what "vibrate" is for on your phone. caribill Posted October 24, 2014 #19 Share Posted October 24, 2014 (edited) As far as annoying other passengers, that is what "vibrate" is for on your phone. The problem is that many people do not realize that is what "vibrate" is for on their phones. Think of all the movies you seen and concerts you attended where someone's cell phone rang for all in the audience to hear. No wonder Princess has stopped using the slogan "Escape Completely."
