We LOVE the Viking Crown Lounge!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I wish that the answer would be to put a dance combo in there, but that would require hiring more people for little or no return on the investment except for some happy feet.

Putting a dance band in there, or scheduling more events in there, would increase the traffic, which would increase the amount of drinks served, which should increase revenue. They already have bartenders in there, this would just increase traffic.

DW and I will probably be utilizing the VCL during our upcoming cruise on the Serenade, if only to get some quiet time away from the crowds. We'll see...

Just my honest opinion, but I've been less and less impressed with the VCL when it basically overlooked the pool deck. Yeah, you can see the ocean off to the side, but it was nowhere as nice as something like the Colony Club on Radiance-class where you could actually have a wide view of the ocean while inside. This was the biggest drawback I see with the aft loft suites on Oasis/Allure (which they have corrected for Quantum) ... who wants to pay that much money and have a view of the basketball courts?

It is so enjoyable to read posts and see what is of interest to people. I liked yours in particular because we would book months if not more than a year in advance to get the center CL suit, 1730. You are right, it was hard to see much of the ocean. We liked it primarily because we could see our son playing on the basket ball court :):):)

To each his own. The secondary reason was for a center view of the aqua theatre.

To make more money from it,......

Day time, rent out the VCL for private events, weddings, and groups,.....

Early Evening/Sunset, make it a romantic Italian Up-charge restaurant open to ALL guests on-board to celebrate anniversary, romantic dates etc, with strolling violinists etc.,......(think, "Palo" on Disney.)

Late Night, 11pm-2,am turn it into the number one Hot Dance Club,Trendy "Las-Vegas Style" With all the coolest Lighting and effects, cutting edge DJ's,... custom One of a kind Drinks you can't get anywhere else on the ship,... made by Live Bar tenders with flair, Tapa's appetizers to share ala-cart,.....and some professional dancers mixed in to pump up the crowd and mix with the public and keep the crowd ramped up.

(to be successful, you can't let it get stale,... this night club must always keep up with the latest, and hottest trends back on land in NYC. Vegas, LA, and Miami.)

The VCL is a great place to watch a thunderstorm while at sea. The bar service is the best aboard. :)

Five of us sailed Freedom of the Seas in 2009 and we had the best bartender ever in Olive or Twist/VCL (Can't remember his name, but the guy who would relieve him on breaks was Cedric, who was cool but not as big a personality). He was a crack up and joked with us every night. We would go there pre-dinner and then come back some nights when they had music.

One night we sat there looking aft over the pool deck and the seas were a bit rolly. We didn't realize how much until we saw how much our horizon changed - one second it's the pool deck, then it was the ocean, then back to the ship. Quite a bit of movement there, and it was a great venue to watch it from.

I just read a short review of a westbound TA on Oasis. Since they added all those new cabins and took away the Viking Crown Lounge that definitely takes away the appeal for us to sail on that ship!!!!

We cruise for the views of the ocean. Period. We LOVE the sea and prefer to enjoy it from a vantage point like the Viking Lounge where you don't have to wrap up in a blanket or stand in the blazing sun!!!

Now, if you want that view the cruise line is forcing you to pay for a suite!!!

It is sad to us that they are moving this direction.

The last 2 cruises both on the Independence and the Allure, there would be 4-6 people in the VCL during the day, we played cards 12-2 on sea days to get out of the sun. It was an underutilized area -- On the Independence, it was being closed off to the rest of the public from 5:30-8:30 every night for D and D+ evening event because of the number of D, D+, PN members. I hope the suite guests appreciate and use it more frequently.

The VCL was one of our favorite places on FOS. We would get our coffee and take our reading there. We loved it because of the view and because it was so quiet. We were usually the only ones there. Royal simply can't let that prime real estate go unused, so we understand why Royal is doing this.

From the Quantum live thread:

"In fact Two70 in general has become a favorite spot for me to sit on the ship. When the shades are up, the view out the back of the wake is very soothing and tranquil. There is a bar right there along with the cafe, and the library with some computers is on one corner of the upstairs deck. Everything you could want in one spot. It's a popular venue but so far has never felt overly crowded and we have not had trouble finding a spot to sit and be comfortable. There is stadium style seating both on the main floor and the upper deck."

"View this morning at breakfast. Totally awesome! And so are the breakfast burritos at cafe 270"

We like the VCL for the quiet time away from the crowds as well, but those suggestions for increasing traffic would actually ruin the VCL since the with the increased traffic it wouldn't be quiet and it would no longer be 'away from the crowds', would it?

If they did the dance bands in the evening, that would leave the quiet time during the day. Need to have a balance so Royal Caribbean doesn't decide to replace the VCI with something else....

It's our favourite go to spot during the day to read and watch the ocean. It is usually quiet but we enjoy that but it also depends on the cruise. Some cruises we have been on, it's hard to find a seat in there during the day.

On my radiance cruise in April this year to Hawaii the VCL was the place to be at night. They had a great DJ and light show and from 11pm on ward had up to 100 people there. Especially on sea days. It was the only place opened and serving drinks (apart from the casino) opened at 1or 2 am. Make for a boring cruise if there was no where to dance and socialise late into the night. :)
