Jewel back early?

I just took a look at the Jewel's webcam and noticed it was passing a lot of ship traffic and there was land in sight.

Then I checked the ship tracking sites and according to those it has passed Galveston and appears to be entering Galveston Bay.

Is this usual, since it's not due to arrive at Bayport until tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 8 am? If so, does it just wait off shore until time to dock?

Just curious?

May be a medical emergency.

Just checked the Port of Houston webcam and Jewell is indeed docked. Feel sorry for those folks who are stuck in Texas waters on their last vacation night and have to deal with reduced drink choices.

And a closed casino.

It was very foggy in Galveston this morning. If the ship had not arrived last night it probably would have had a late arrival today. At least by docking ahead of schedule everyone will be able to make their flights and embarkation will be on time today. Next week we sail on the Jewel so we're hoping that the fog stays away. To those sailing this week - wishing you a great cruise!

I want to thank you all for this thread and your comments. I will be on the jewel out of Houston in April. Since I'm cruising with my 18-year-old niece this time I will not get my bar set up as usual. If it looks like we're getting back early I may pop into a bar and just get a couple of shots of vodka and take them to the room for my famous frozen cosmos.

The Captain announced yesterday they were sailing full speed in an attempt to reach Texas waters by 3PM when they thought the port might briefly be open. It was closed most of yesterday too. The port opened as planned and we were along side by 6PM.

It was kind of a letdown to get in early. No last night drinks on my balcony enjoying our last sea views. Instead, we had a nice view of the terminal. The rest of the cruise was great, though!

To know where a boat is, check http://aprs.fi

eg for Norwegian Jewel:

http://aprs.fi/#!mt=roadmap&z=11&call=i%2F311827000&timerange=3600&tail=3600

APRS is not always updated unfortunately though (depends on the radio relays working properly).

One can also check:

These may be stupid questions but if the ship returns to port early due to inclement weather or another reason, does the cruise end then? Or do you stay on the ship in port until the original disembarkation day? Can you disembark if you want to?

That site is a month out of date.

This too may be a stupid question but what does getting back to Port of Houston early have to do with not:confused: getting drinks?

Texas liquor laws. Something about only serving liquors from Texas I think.

There's a thread somewhere on the NCL forum about it.

While in Texas waters, NCL can only serve liquor that was purchased in Texas because of the current liquor laws. Otherwise NCL would have to pay a large amount of taxes to the state for any alcohol served on the ship that was not purchased from the state of Texas. Although this has been covered rather extensively in the other thread, also be aware that any alcohol pre-ordered for your cabin will not be delivered until the day after embarkation. Also, any included wine/champagne/spirits with your cabin will also be delayed until the next day. And any alcohol you may purchase at ports to take home, if it is out in plain sight when disembarking, you will be directed to the tax table just the other side of customs to pay the tax.

Maybe the ship wouldn't be considered Texas, but the country from which it's registered.

If I were aboard, I'd hope that passengers would not be made to disembark early. I would still want to spend that last night on the ship.

Reposting my questions since they weren't answered.

Yes, we came in early to avoid any delay due to fog. Last January we had a 5 hour delay on Princess because of fog.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Our RCCL ship was delayed about 5 hours coming back into port a few years ago. It was strange waking up that last morning and hearing fog horns! We drove down to houston, so I didn't mind the extra 1/2 day on the ship. I'm sure it was a nightmare for any of those who had early afternoon flights. RCCL did a great job handling the delay, and they had a whole morning's worth of activities planned to keep everyone busy. Those who were catching flights on the Jewel probably appreciated the early arrival!
