Rare Presto2 Posted December 29, 2014 #26 Share Posted December 29, 2014 Sorry to sound stupid, but we're having a look at the NCL forum to decide if we would like an NCL cruise and have nooooooo idea what a Howl at the Moon is other than in a UK Hammer House of Horror Film in the 1980s - where it involved werewolves. :);) Can someone please translate it for me - cheers :)

Dave85 Posted December 29, 2014 #28 Share Posted December 29, 2014 I went to see Howl at the Moon the last night of my Epic cruise two weeks ago because I had read so many positive comments. Even though I went in wanting to like the show, it didn't resonate with me. So personally, I'm glad Escape will have a lot of new offerings. Folks who like it will still be able to see it on existing ships, I presume. (At least the -aways.) . . . Entertainment is Norwegian's signature. I'm sure they will offer some sort of substitute. Spiegel Tent on Epic and Breakaway became Illusionarium on Getaway. Fat Cats on Breakaway became Grammy Experience on Getaway and is becoming Cavern Club on Epic. No fears, there will be something awesome. We already know about Tobacco Road (the likely substitute in the Headliner's space) and the 5 O'clock Somewhere Bar. There will be plenty to do! Agree 100%. I'm hoping for something new and great in that space.

markf Posted December 29, 2014 #30 Share Posted December 29, 2014 While i agre they are entertaining, what is distasteful is their constant request for tips. Why should they be the only entertainer on a cruise ship that asks for tips numerous times..

Thanks - sounds good to me. :) Sorry if this is off topic but notice that you have done OV2 - in a few words, how does NCL compare. (A sentence will do !) Since our days on OV2 we've done Celebrity and P&O but still have fond memories of that cruise. :)
grovesteve Posted December 29, 2014 Author #32 Share Posted December 29, 2014 They've got rid of Howl but added a Magaretiville or something. Guessing they are steering it more to the U.S. target market as year round from Miami. Howl at the moon is seen as a great show by many Europeans.. There will still be a piano player/requests but just not duelling on stage.. I was just on the Getaway and there was a piano player in the bar outside of the ice bar. He was good, but one piano player is not the same are a trio that feed off of eachother and do the funny bit that Howl at the Moon does. My wife and I are seriously considering cancelling our reservations on the Excape for the TA because without Howl we don't know if we would enjoy it enough to justify the cost. May just wait for the review to come out. Steve R.

There will still be a piano player/requests but just not duelling on stage.. Dueling pianos if VERY American and has been around for a really long time - even Disney has this type of venue. We have seen dueling piano shows for over 30 years. Also many Europeans do not care for the format since it is American centric with American songs and American performers. They don't get all the songs. It is specifically geared to the Americans and/or Canadians onboard. It can be great, or a real miss depending on the team they have in place (we have only had a few misses). I like Howl as a change to the traditional one performer standing in an area trying to entertain with no one paying any attention. And it is much better than Second City which also does not translate over to Europe. Comedy can be more subjective than music IMO. I would miss it:(

Rare insidecabin Posted December 29, 2014 #36 Share Posted December 29, 2014 NCL is a good fit for ex OV cruisers UK people should get themselves booked on the Jade 14th Jan, 10n great ports with few tourists and warmer than UK . This years bargain. USA prices are cheap and include 2 of the choice extras so Dinning and beverage £350 in and OV or under £700 for a 2 bed suite and good flight availability under £150. (those are solo prices as well) Start here and work through the Europe options. https://www.ncl.com/vacations/ UK prices are good but no extras
hpecorari Posted December 29, 2014 #37 Share Posted December 29, 2014 It is part of their act. Twice, once on Epic and once on Getaway I requested a song along with $10.00. Both times my song was never played.....both times they kept my $10.00. I guess I didn't give them enough. Never again will I request a song. cliffd64 Posted December 29, 2014 #38 Share Posted December 29, 2014 I guess I'm just spoiled to have one close enough at home that Howl At The Moon while at sea does not hold my interest whatsoever. It can be fun... but I'm open to new things for the Escape... Harriet They've always played my requests and if I do add a tip it's only a few bucks. A lot also depends on the song, quite often they save better ones until the end and have read out who left $10 for this one and they've left the venue for an early night .. melbur Posted December 30, 2014 #43 Share Posted December 30, 2014 We LOVE Howl - on the TA Epic we ended up there many nights. We had a favourite gal there - Laurie - and she was great. Just off the Breakawy Christmas and Laurie was playing there at HOWL. We find it very entertaining
LrgPizza Posted December 30, 2014 #44 Share Posted December 30, 2014 Sometimes people request a song the performers simply don't know. Sometimes people request a song that was already played 2 minutes before they walked in. Sometimes the performers run out of time to play everything. They are a live act doing the best they can, not a jukebox.

They are a live act doing the best they can, not a jukebox. That may be true but in both of my cases there were times they discussed between themselves what songs to sing and never even went to where the 'requests' were. Either way.....I'll enjoy them when I can but won't request or leave a tip. No biggie for me as there are many places around me that does the same thing. Why should they be the only entertainer on a cruise ship that asks for tips numerous times.. Howl at the Moon is a chain of piano bars around the country. NCL only purchased the name. Asking for tips is part of what they do, and actually part of the fun, but NCL doesn't allow them to get too crazy with it. I have seen hundreds of dollars get tossed around for one song at real dueling piano bars. Usually it will be with playing college fight songs and someone pays them more to "make it stop", and then play their college fight song, and then they are outbid, etc.. It's really a lot of fun, and you certainly don't have to tip if you don't want to.

Did you stay for the entire performance? They may have played the song after you left (or played it just before you came in). Also, what was the song? Did it fit the style of the show (sing-a-long) or was it a slow ballad? $10 is a very generous tip to go with a song request and that normally would be prioritized. Thank you for your generosity... If the song wasn't known by any of the 3 players, the opportunity to make a substitution should have been offered.

On the Getaway I did stay till the end, can't remember what song it was but it was in sync with what they were already playing from time to time. I left as much as I did hoping it would get played! LOL Was still a fun evening. Harriet
Mooguy Posted December 31, 2014 #49 Share Posted December 31, 2014 Howl at the Moon can vary enormously according to the competence of the pianists. The first time we went on the Epic there were awesome pianists, Drew and Tommy, and it was a fantastic experience. But we've seen others who are really not so good..... Sent from my iPhone using Forums Very true, seen it over & over again. Epic was awesome standing room only, Getaway not so great.

The first time we went on the Epic there were awesome pianists, Drew and Tommy, and it was a fantastic experience. But we've seen others who are really not so good..... Sent from my iPhone using Forums I definitely agree with this. Howl on our CTN on the Breakaway last January was unbelievably fun and high energy; we didn't have exactly the same experience when we sailed for a week on Breakaway and Getaway later in the year. I think this was partially due to the skill of the performers, and also partially due to the energy of the crowd on a CTN. We also had the experience of paying for a song and it not being played; this happened multiple times, and most of the time we stayed for the entire performance. Yes, it is true that it could have been played before we got there, but doubt that was the case every time it happened. I understand it is no guarantee and you are taking your chances, and we still had a lot of fun. But I still wish they played my husband's song :)
