The day we were supposed to leave my adult daughter went to the doctor with a fever and turned out she had the flu, so was she was not able to go with us. I called the cruise line and let them know what was going on. Now that we are back, because she did not have insurance is she out of luck? I would be happy just to get an OBC for next cruise. Thanks!

I think she entitled to receive the government taxes and fees back, but beyond that I think she is out of luck. You can always ask, if you are persistent enough they may give you a small OBC. Personally I wouldn't pursue it.

Sorry that your daughter in ill. The Flu is so miserable for one to endure. Hope she gets better soon.

When I booked our cruise for April so far out, I opted to purchase insurance. Wish we had a crystal ball to prepare for these types of situations.

Good luck with your inquiry to Carnival and have great time.

Unfortunately she's out of luck. Taxes is all she's getting back. You can always write a letter to Carnival to see if they will issue some credit towards a future cruise, but don't expect it. If Carnival issued credits and refunds to anybody in your predicament, travel insurance companies would go out of business. Sorry this happened.

I wonder if your daughter paid for the cruise(or you paid) with a credit card?? Some credit cards actually have good trip insurance that you may not realize? I'd check the credit card to see and then claim from that insurance.

I second that. Call your CC company...I know people who have used them to get money back. Good luck!!!

Carnival won't refund anything including taxes or gov fees because since she was the 2nd person in the cabin, that made my son a solo passenger and he absorbed the cost :( We normally purchase the insurance, but with the holidays time just slipped away from me. Live and learn.

Thank you for coming back. I had a feeling that's how it would go because of solo status. He absorbed the cost because cabins are priced double occupancy.

So sorry...

But wondering if they had had another family member or friend who could have gone on short notice, would Carnival generally allow for a last minute substitute? Has anyone had that happen?

I'm convinced some wait in the tall grass to post "you shoulda did this _____ ."

Here's what I have done in the past with a situation a little similar to yours. Call them. Offer to book another cruise and see if they will help with some of the pricing and credit transfer.

While a case study of one. they did it for my family. It's worth a call.

We always take the insurance. The cruise we took last year, I needed it. I got sick on the last night of the cruise and spent the night in the "sick bay" then was immediatly taken to the hospital in the morning and spent the entire day there. When the $3000 bill came, we just turned it over to the insurance company after paying the co-pay.

After I wrote a letter pleading our case Carnival did issue my parents a full cruise credit when there was a death in the immediate family 3 days prior to our cruise. We had to submit a death statement from the funeral director. I was very grateful as my parents have a very limited budget and we actually paid for the cruise. We always buy insurance for ourselves privately through our credit union, it never even occurred to me to insure them. Lesson learned- but I have to say Carnival went above and beyond and earned our loyalty forever. I suspect they felt sympathetic because of the nature of the emergency - but it may also have helped we had 4 other cabins full of family members and were very spendy in the casino. My parents were able to use their credit and cruise with us a year later. With insurance this time. ;-)

I think they treat deaths a little differently than they do sickness. They seem to look at each case differently. Some get reimbursed, some don't.

I think they treat deaths a little differently than they do sickness. They seem to look at each case depending on what the reason was for missing the cruise. Some get reimbursed, some don't.
