Queen Victoria. - Dry Dock

Cunard Line is bumping up its dry dock of Queen Victoria due to a problem in one of its propulsion units.

Taking place at the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, the refurbishment will see nine solo cabins added to the ship as well as new carpets and flat-screen TVs. Sun awnings will be put in the open area near the stern Lido pool on both sides of the Grills Upper Terrace to create more shade. Additionally, fine jewelry and watch shops will be created.

So basically, similar to what they did recently on the QE.

I wish they would replace that nasty furniture in the midships pool area. On the QE they have lovely soft seating on the port side around lovely tables and it has created a nice seating area. Every year Im on the ship Im told they will do so in the next refit but it hasn't happened yet...

Do you mean this area in the photo below with the rattan furniture? (when you come out of the Winter Garden/Garden Lounge) It's one of my favourite areas to sit but I thought the seating was on both sides of the ship, not just the port side.

Unfortunately the 'Wall Mounted Flat Screen TVs' are now not going to be fitted (in all cabins) during this January refit.

According to a senior crew member who is in dry dock ....the email informs me that the TVs will now have to be fitted at a later date :(

Quite correct Ray, This type of furniture was on both sides of the pool on Q.Vic in November 2014. And very comfortable too :)

That's good news if the ones on the QE are anything to go by. Unless ours was just a bad one but the picture quality was quite poor.

they have replaced the old stuff??? At last...thats fantastic....I was last on the Rio to Sydney sector of the WC in 2014 and we all lamented that the QE bet us in that regard....(not much else...the QV is far the better ship...(duck for flaming))

The new shades in the pool area will also be great additions....

Pity about the TVs I wonder which staterooms will get the new tvs apart from the new Single cabins.

Those new "single cabins" are a sham. The fare is no bargain, and who wants to advertise that they are alone in a cabin for one? Or am I missing something

Like Roscoe, we have just booked the 2016 world cruise of the QV and are looking forward to the additional shade on the Lido deck and the rattan furniture near the pool area. Happy that they have kept the Chart Room so far.

While I was doing a dummy booking for 2016 I looked at the single cabins and they are sold out so they may be a "sham" as Salacia said but apparently they are popular.

Ahola, Oahucruiser. Yes, those single cabins must be very popular since you found that all 10 cabins had sold out for the 2016 World Cruise a year in advance of sailing. Doesn't that mean that roughly one-third of passengers who book the full QV World Cruise book single cabins? Bad luck for passengers hoping to book a segment voyage in a single cabin. -S.

Why would you want to pretend you were travelling as two ?

interesting Oahucruiser, when I booked at the end of November they offered me the single staterooms, at the time I had the choice of more than one.

My first pick was one of the two staterooms overlooking the bow which I prefer over even balcony so a tiny "single" stateroom didn't even rate although I don;t know how anyone else would know you were in a single stateroom or not unless you were trying to entice them in???

The only advantage I could see for the single rooms are the size of the window as I remember the windows in that part of the casino to be virtually floor to ceiling. But at least now they can say they do have single staterooms as per demand.

Im sure that if they have sold all the single staterooms for the full world cruisers that it is preferable to Cunard than taking the risk of selling them on smaller sectors and possibly not earning as much on them.

Though the average number of World Cruisers on a circumnavigation are roughly 700 persons, Im not sure how you would calculate that as 1/3 of the possible single cabin capacity. Unless of course they were being crammed as steerage bunk class?

Anyone familiar with the deck plan would know which cabins are single cabins. For security reasons, some passengers (perhaps especially women) would rather not be in a cabin known to have only one occupant.

From comments I've read on this forum, there is not much of a price difference between single cabins and a larger oceanview cabin, although the window is bigger. Perhaps I misunderstood those comments?

All I can say is that when I did the dummy booking two days ago, the single cabins said sold out. Who knows, maybe it will say something different today or in a week. It certainly does seem early for all of them to be gone but there are only nine of them.

Well its the best itin that Cunard have posted for a WC in a long time so Im sure it will be popular. Your name is familiar Oahucruiser, we have sailed on the same voyage in the past have we not? was it the 2010 WC? Are you embarking in the UK?

Looking forward to coming back to Hawaii

Im sure some woman (and men) would not however, however they would only know if you told them your stateroom number. Most people I meet on board have no need to shout out their address on board.

Unless you are Hyacynth.....

Roscoe, the point is that those single cabins are known to be occupied by one person. And of course no one shouts out their cabin number on board. I haven't read any reports of passengers being followed to their cabin or thefts occurring in cabins on Cunard ships, have you? (Other cruise ships, yes - but not Cunard.) No doubt many (if not most) passengers have no security concerns regarding solo occupancy cabins and wouldn't even give it second thought.

Im sorry, I thought that was exactly what your posts 10 and 15 were referring to...I've obviously completely missed your point.

however.....

the idea that there is some masked and dangerous thief lurking on a Cunard ship possibly driving a mobility scooter and hiding in the darkened recesses of deck 1 awaiting his next victim is positively appealing. Perhaps he can take advantage of the one flickering bulkhead light in the companionway...the vapour from his "e" cigarette slowly wafting out of his hiding place and creeping its way along the ceiling giving a hint of his whereabouts.....

The ding of the lift bell and the muffled footfall of a comfortable shoe enters the erie sanctity of the hall........

Salacia, I think you have hit on a good idea for my next book.

Roscoe, personally I don't understand the attraction of the single cabins for the reasons given (plus I would miss having a balcony), but I understand that there are differing opinions.

Your next book idea sounds like it could be very entertaining as opposed to news accounts of crimes at sea that have been reported recently, for example http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Holland-America-Line-Cruise-Ship-Worker-Sentenced-in-Sexual-Assault-of-Passenger-287947611.html

Best of luck on your book - I'm sure it will get lots of laughs. -S.

We like the 2016 itinerary because it doesn't go to India and China. We LOVE those places but have been on several worldies where we had to get the visas for those 2 places and it was a horrendous chore and very expensive.

Yes, Roscoe, we have been on a couple of the same voyages: the QV in 2010 and the QE in 2012. We are actually embarking in Honolulu. The San Francisco to Southampton voyage is considered a world cruise so we pay for the 4 days from San Francisco to Honolulu and will have permission to board here. It's cheaper than 2 people flying to SFO, paying for a hotel, meals, taxis and then sailing back into our hometown 4 days later. ~Patti
