LuCruise Posted February 2, 2015 #201 Share Posted February 2, 2015 I purchased for both our March 2015 and March 2016 cruises. I know that we will come out like bandits with the 10% exchange rate this March with the current rates. I am guessing the Canadian dollar will not rebound any time too soon due to oil prices, so I think the 10% for 2016 will be a great rate as well. I am not a savy enough investor to get 10% or 20% per year in investments consistently, so this seems like a deal to me since I had the money in the bank it was not a big deal. I was told that unused credit will be put back on my credit card at the rate that it was purchased at (not sure if this is true or not), but even if the Canadian dollar came back to par by our 2016, there would be nothing preventing me to paying with my credit card while on board I assume and having them refund the OBC at 10% to my credit card if I so desired to do so. Kind of like locking in with RCCL at an early cruise rate and then getting the better rate if a price drop occurs, or just keeping your original booking rate that you are satisfied with if no drops occur. Thanks. So you purchased for far away too. It's hard to know if the dollar will get better before then (or closer than 10%). Guess its all a gamble. Also hard to estimate how much OBC we would actually need.

Haber Posted February 3, 2015 #207 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Bought another $500 today and paid my gratuities that had been locked in at $11.82/day. Woo hoo! That will cover our activities and drinks for four people.
tomko2 Posted February 3, 2015 #208 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Couple of questions - hope you can help. 1. What happens if you end up cancelling the cruise, will you get your OBC back? The reason I ask is that we currently have OBC's on a number of cruises that RCL gave as part of the WOW sale. Obviously, if we cancel any of those cruises we would get our deposit back but not the OBC. So how do they differentiate between OBC we purchase and OBC they gave us? 2. We sometimes end up charging our SeaPass for money to use in the Casino; do you see any reason why the OBC wouldn't cover this charge? Many thanks Kathy

No different than cancelling a pre purchased beverage package or shore excursion. It would be refunded to your CC. All OBC is coded as refundable and non-refundable. 2. OBC would cover casino charges. Edited February 3, 2015 by Ourusualbeach

Just called D+ desk and was told it would be in the prevailing bank exchange rate so then called Gifts and Gears. Bought $300. USD OBC for a number of upcoming cruises. Cost $330. CDA each. LuCruise Posted February 4, 2015 #211 Share Posted February 4, 2015 So I mentioned to DH about this thread and he thought it was a great idea (considering he's not so positive on the rate getting better...even in a year from now). I'm reading back on the thread.... Common amount is to purchase$300 USD (for $330)? What expenses are you expecting to use it for? Trying to estimate how much to buy? We're a family of 4. We will need to pre-pay our gratuities (if still on My Time), but will probably pay for drinks a-la-cart. Probably won't do any excursions but may do little things like character meal (may pre-book though to get our time), cupcake class. And we do have $100 OBC from our booking. Magicat Posted February 4, 2015 #212 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I called the D+ desk earlier today and asked about the OBC. They said that they would charge my cc the amount I want in USD. Ok, I just got off the phone with the 800 number here and I got the same answer. How are you getting them to convert the US amount into Canadian? It seems they want to just charge me the US funds on my cc. I guess what are you asking for when you call?
csaeroach Posted February 4, 2015 #213 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I just tried calling and this only works if the cruise booking was made in Canadian dollars. We booked this cruise last May when dollar was pretty good and booked in US dollars so now I cannot buy OBC in Canadian dollars as my booking is in USD. :(. Both currencies have to match so no advantage to me to buy OBC and have to pay in USD right now.
Magicat Posted February 4, 2015 #214 Share Posted February 4, 2015 We booked in Canadian and I asked for a Canadian OBC but was told that they only provide it in US dollars and that is what they will charge my credit card. What am I missing?

Ken at the beach Posted February 4, 2015 #218 Share Posted February 4, 2015 We booked in Canadian and I asked for a Canadian OBC but was told that they only provide it in US dollars and that is what they will charge my credit card. What am I missing? If you just call and ask them questions about it they sometimes provide the wrong answers. You need to give them your reservation number and have them open your reservation so that they can see that you booked in CDN$. Tell them that you want to purchase XXX amount of US$ As an OBC. They will tell you the price in CDN$ that will be charged to your credit card. You cannot purchase CDN OBC as all the transactions on the ship are in US$. Magicat Posted February 4, 2015 #222 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Thanks for all the help and support, I finally got someone to give me the credit! Yeah! I purchased $500 ship credit for $550 Canadian. But as I mentioned while I was on the phone with this gentleman he did say that they had a meeting about the exchange rates but the mucky mucks would get back to them so I see this loop hole closing soon. Again thanks for everyone's input and support. Now my DW can get that spa appointment she's always wanted.
