Reading through the threads, you are so helpful but I guess every situation is different. 5 of us will be on the Anthem Thursday in July. Two grandparents 70's, single mom and her two kids 10 and 13.

We will be traveling from Boston and want to allow time to see the World Trade Center Museum and Ellis Island. We are flexible as to when we leave home but we are on a budget.

Should we stay at Newark airport on Tuesday and Wednesdy nights and take Path to the city. What would you suggest? It is a long ride to Newark in one day, could we stay in Ct and get to those same sites? Thanks for any and all suggestions. We plan to park at the port.

If the Newark Marriott (regular Marriott? Courtyard Marriott?) works for you with a party of 5 (one room? Two rooms? Cost?), then go for it. Any airport hotel would work for you.

Your basic strategy should be to hop on the NJ turnpike in the car and drive to Exit 14B and follow the signs to Liberty State Park for the Ellis Island/SOL ferry. Parking is $7.

Go to Ellis Island. Then take the return ferry to lower Manhattan (not NJ) and walk to the World Trade Center across Battery Park to Bowling Green, walk up Broadway, take a peek down Wall St, check out Trinity Church and walk through the graveyard to Church Street and on to the WTC area.

To return to your car, take the Liberty Landing Ferry from the World Financial Center to Liberty State Park. The ferry is $5/pp with your SOL ticket stubs. http://www.libertylandingferry.com. IMO this is the the best way to do this trip in terms of time, money, and hassle.

Where are you coming from in Mass? Do you have the cars only directions through NY? I do this basic trip several times a year.

We are traveling from Salem, MA. Thanks for your suggestions.

It's about a 5 hour drive best started between 9-10 am from Salem so you miss Boston morning traffic and get through NYC before afternoon NY traffic. If you don't have the cars only directions through NY, I can post them.

If you're getting one hotel room for 5 people, you need to book that now because they are hard to come by.

What's the best way to get from the Newark Hilton to the World Trade Center ??

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

PATH from Newark Penn Station across the street from the Hilton. The hotel has a connecting skywalk to the station. $2.75/pp fare. 22 minute ride to WTC.

Thanks, we will be getting two rooms, hopefully free Marriotts as I have two free ones.

The airport hotels have Newark and Elizabeth addresses and are generally located near exit 14 and exit 13A of the NJ turnpike. There is a main Marriott, a Courtyard Newark, a Courtyard Elizabeth, Springhill Suites, Fairfield Inn, Renaissance, and Residence Inn. There is a Courtyard in downtown Newark.

The Secaucus area is also an option at exit 16E and 16W - Courtyard Lyndhurst, Renaissance Meadowlands, Residence Inn Secaucus, Courtyard Secaucus, Resudence Inn East Rutherford, and Fairfield Inn East Rutherford. These hotels are further away, but still an easy drive on the turnpike to the SOL ferry at Liberty State Park. There is also a Courtyard in Jersey City.

Some of these hotels will charge $10+ for parking, so check the details. The only hotel with direct public transit to the World Trade Center area is the Courtyard Jersey City, which us the most expensive of all these properties. That's why I've suggested driving to the SOL ferry at Liberty State Park with your group of 5. The $7 parking is an absolute steal. Your SOL/Ellis Island ferry tickets provide transportation to both islands plus an option to return to lower Manhattan. The Liberty Landing ferry is close to the World Trade Center and offers a discounted rate of $5/pp to go back to your car at Liberty State Park.

We are planning to park at the pier I see its 19 or 20 dollars a day at the pier at central parking according RC web site, just wondering if anyone has use it

It recently and can tell me the current price?

Yes we use it all the time. Just cruised out of there March 7-19 and it is now currently $20 a day.

Much nicer since they built the new garage. The old parking lots were terrible.

Hi, I will be staying at a hotel near LaGuardia airport the night before departure from Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal. Has anyone on cruise critic done this before and would you have an estimate on cost to get from hotel in New York to Cape Liberty?

Thanks so much!

You need to reserve a car service like Dial7 or Carmel Limo. Expect to pay $100+ for base service, tolls, and tip.

We used Junior Luxury NYC as our private transfer company. Rated number 9 on Tripadvisor. I'd highly recommend them.

We are driving in from Pittsburgh and looking to stay at a hotel the night before our cruise. Staten Island seems to have a few hotels that let you park for free if you stay at the hotel. They also have free shuttles to and from the port. There are also hotels near the airport that let you park for free, although they are about $100 more for the rooms. What are the advantages and disadvantages of one area over the other?

Thank You

How many days is your cruise?

The current disadvantage to Staten Island is that the Bayonne Bridge is frequently closed, which means any hotel shuttle has to drive back to NJ past the airport to get to Cape Liberty. That's a PITA. In addition you pay up to a $15 Toll eastbound just to get to Staten Island.

The best deal at the airport is Trinityreservations.com - Ramada Plaza - room, parking, and port shuttle for just over $200 including all taxes.

We are driving from Buffalo and plan to have a couple of days to visit NYC prior to Summit cruise from Bayonne in July. On somewhat of a budget so were thinking of using Airmiles to stay in ? Best Western, somewhere convenient to both the port and transit to Manhatten. What would be a nice safe area in which to look?

You're looking for a Best Western? Are you parking at the port or are you looking for a park/sleep?

Even though it's in downtown Newark, I really like the Robert Treat. Free parking, free breakfast, and free shuttle to Newark Penn Station where you can take the train to midtown Manhattan (New York Penn Station) or PATH to downtown Manhattan (World Trade). It's a full service hotel on a quiet street facing a park. However, Newark is highly urban and we don't recommend just wandering around on foot after dark.

I'm not as keen on the location of the Best Western at the airport. It's $26 round trip from the Newark Airport train station to midtown NYC and only $11 from Newark Penn Station. Cost round trip to downtown NY is $22 from the airport, but only $5.50 on PATH from Newark Penn Station.

We were going to park at the port. What about the riverview Inn?

At the Robert Treat, is the car safe in their parking lot? Is there a cost for parking? Would we need to taxi from the station if dark?

Riverview Inn in Rahway? I have no clue. To me Rahway would even less of a vacation destination than Newark. How are you going to get to and from the train station?

The parking at the Robert Treat is free and private. It is right at the hotel and is not open to the public. The hotel runs a shuttle van between the hotel, Newark Penn Station, and the airport. Newark Penn Station is a major transportation hub for NJ Transit, Amtrak, PATH, and local area bus. If you come back late and don't want to wait around for the shuttle (you have to call and arrange a pick up), you can easily get a cab to go the 6 blocks for about $6. The station is always busy in the evening. No coming in to a deserted station with nothing open and no services like waiting taxis.

I stayed at the Robert Treat precruise last year. I arrived on Amtrak around 8 pm. I called for the shuttle and waited about 20 minutes. I could have taken a cab, but I wanted to check out the shuttle. I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. It's a full service hotel with classic charm. Rooms are updated with the expected amenities including free wifi. I thought the bed was very comfortable. I would definitely stay there again - much more appealing to me than any of the airport hotels. The next day I took the shuttle to the train station, PATH to Jersey City, the light rail to Bayonne, and got picked up by a friend in her car service.

We are cruising Aug 28-Sept 4, getting off ship at Cape Liberty...we are not flying back to Vegas until Sept 8. So far, we want to see 9/11 memorial, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, some church and cemetery I forgot name of just now. I know there is lots of stuff close together...We are planning to rent a car - just not sure how good of idea that is or if it's more hassle than it's worth. We do want to check out Atlantic Ocean/coastal areas...I did vacation in San Francisco/Bay area and did great without a car...Thoughts? TIA!

More than just a bad idea, just short of saying, "don't even think about doing it" - parking is expensive in NYC, especially in Manhattan !!

Where do you plan to stay ? Overnight hotel parking can easily run you $50 daily - this isn't Sin City with complimentary valet parking & huge DIY free parking. To get around the Bay area, a car is often needed except inside the city of SFO, with the parking systems, tows & residential permits, etc. - NYC is infamous for towing & just as expensive as SFO. I think you got the idea

Now, if you want to check out the Atlantic Ocean/coastal areas - you can take the NYC subway train to Coney Island and walk out to the Broadwalk & feel the ocean breeze, or, out to the Rockaways or Howard Beach, near JFK Airport - unless you like the idea of sitting in a moving parking lot at rush hour or going in circles several times trying to find a legal parking spot & read all the parking restrictions/warning signs, etc.

If you are thinking of going to see Atlantic City with casinos, that's different - it's nothing like Vegas, but - go on a weekday & rates are cheap/almost free & you could rent a car for the day, but you will need to have EZ-Pass in the rental car (electronic toll - like the ones used for the Bay area bridges or down in Los Angles area freeways for a faster commute) to zip thru the toll plaza down the GSP.

We do have a Zip car system so you can reserve, pick it up & drive, then drop it off in another location, etc. - complicated & driving in the city can be mad crazy, not for the timid driver.

For those landmarks & sights to see mentioned - there are no parking nearby & garages will cost you $$ - better off taking a taxi, booking a car service, or join the 2 million New Yorkers by riding the subways/trains, ferries & buses.
