maggieq Posted February 10, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Have read pretty bad reviews on the smoke in the ship. I am looking at the getaway for May. Can anyone comment on the level of smoke? We wouldn't be going to the casino. Also, the amount of sun beds for pool area? Thanks!

We didnt notice any major smoke smell around the casino...not sure I was looking for it though so others may be more sensitive. There was a small smoking section by Lido but it can easily be avoided. I believe the only indoor smoking area left is in the Casino, and the outdoor ones are limited, so you shouldn't have a problem.

#1TravelMom Posted February 10, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2015 I am EXTREMELY sensitive to smoke. I just don't walk thru the casino - simple enough. There are a few other areas nearby that I can smell a slight odor - but nothing dramatic as some seem to say(just my opinion). I am a person who just can't stand it - I will shower, wash my hair, put clothes immediately in the washer when returning from anywhere with the slightest smoke smell. I would say I'm pretty ridiculous about smoke odors. With that being said, we have been on the Epic 3 times and the Getaway once. We are currently getting ready to book on the Getaway again. I assure you - if the smoke smell was terrible on these ships - one day would have been enough for me. Please don't miss out on a great ship over this worry! newmexicoNita Posted February 10, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 10, 2015 No matter what line or ship unless they are 100% smoke free which none are, you are going to incounter some smoke, mainly in the casinos. Most of us hate the smell, but hubby and I can even go to the casino and be fine. It takes us about 5 minutes to adjust. Other than that we have never been bothered by smoke on any of the NCL ships since the days of cutting back on where smokers are allowed to smoke. Is there a smell of cigarettes? Yes, it will be somewhat noticeable if you're walking through the casino deck 7. But it is not unbearable nor is it smoky. I'm a non-smoker who hates the smell of cigarettes and cigars but I did not find it being a problem when I was on Breakaway or Epic. If you are ultra-sensitive, being on Getaway, you can always traverse the ship via decks 6 and 8 ... or take a stroll and catch some fresh air along the deck 7 waterfront/promenade. luvtheships Posted February 10, 2015 #8 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Cruises are what they are and one must decide if they are for them I hate smoke so I stay far from the casino I accept there will be crowds on ships and get places early I know the pools are small and loungers limited so I go up a few decks for a lounger I love the numerous ports a cruise brings so I cruise The price is right for me because we book cheap cabins We travel often and know how to utilize our time. We roll with the punches We rarely complain We know what to expect so it works Sent from my iPhone using Forums
LrgPizza Posted February 10, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 10, 2015 We sailed Getaway prior to the stricter smoking rules that limit where smoking can take place. We didn't notice an issue. It would even be better now.

You must have searched high and low to find a review specializing in smoking on Getaway. It's about as smoke free as you can get.

I don't have any idea where you have read such reviews but in 5 NCL cruises I have never had any problem with smoke, and I hate it.
weltek Posted February 10, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) We sailed in Dec. 2014 (a few months ago). We do not smoke, and are fairly sensitive to it (not to the level that we'd ever complain to someone, but we leave places/move seats if it's an issue). It only annoyed us to a mild level when walking through the casino to get to O'Sheehans or the Tropicana room on that deck. I thought the smoke floating up to deck 8 would bother me, but it didn't. I only noticed it on deck 8 when I was standing near the railing waiting for someone. We ate at the noodle bar and raw bar, and it wasn't noticeable. The worst smoke smell was back in the corner of the casinos. Not a place anyone HAS to go. Two of us were always able to find chairs on the deck above the pool (good views of pool), but not always around the pool. We more commonly spent time in Spice H2O, which is adults only during the day and relaxing. Always PLENTY of chairs there. I really liked it. Hot tubs were crowded, though. We had to patiently wait for a "turn." Edited February 10, 2015 by weltek
Rare mizLORInj Posted February 10, 2015 #13 Share Posted February 10, 2015 If Getaway is like Breakaway, if you are near the casino when it's busy and there are a lot of people smoking, you are going to smell smoke. That has been my experience. Is it going to ruin my cruise? No. I just avoid that area.
Dave85 Posted February 10, 2015 #14 Share Posted February 10, 2015 We were on Breakaway and only found it smoky in the casino. Otherwise no issues.
