Chair hog solution?

Oh I wish this were true. I don't like chair hogs and don't consider myself one. We had a group of 12 people on the Magic. We decided on an area above the aft pool on the Magic with a couch and a couple of chairs and a couple loungers to meet at for the day.....for 12 people! There were always at least 4-5 of us present in this area. And all chairs were used at least every 30 min. We got yelled at a couple of times by very rude people that we were hogging and saving. Once someone absolutely insisted on using one of the chairs in our circle. So, to prove a point they stayed there for like an hour in the middle of our group! While the friend/spouse whatever stood behind them watching for one of us to get up!

Sorry that happened to you. We never have a group that big. We have four kids, but even when ALL of us are cruising and we need to be by the pool, we normally only have 2 loungers for the DH and myself. If the kids wander over from the pool they just sit on the end of one of ours because we know they won't be there long anyway.

uhhh, nobody said throw there things overboard or push them around except for the person that said they would. I said give them to the pool attendant.

Also, I am just as crazy and have a short temper, the reason why I had to deal with the head of security, the ship's captain himself, and almost the FBI.

You're lucky

Guy I went to high school with was a big crazy tough guy with a short temper. Pushed the wrong person around and has pretty much been in a facility staring at the ceiling with his eyes and mouth wide open for over 25 years .

I've posted this for years:

The solution to "chair hogging" is to move the crap people piled on a chair. (you can ALWAYS tell who's actually using the chairs and who's "saving" them) It doesn't mean that much to them or they wouldn't leave it lying around. Second to that, my kids are in the pool and I'm going to watch them. I've never had anyone say a single word to me "if" they ever even came back. If they ever do, I'll stand up and start waving and screaming at the nearest Carnival employee that someone is harassing me and I need security!!

ps...thanks to that one person who left the orange. It was tasty! The one flip flop in one lounger, the other flip flop in the next lounger, the towel in the next one and the magazine in the next one was kind of lame, though.

I'm still laughing at your response to chair hoggers! Isn't it always the FEW cruisers on a cruise who feel entitled to everything that they try take more and more from everyone else. For example chair hogging, cutting into buffet lines and constantly complaining at dinner. No one should be able to save a chair for any reason, EVER. Carnival should employ a new policy immediately and post signs that there will be no more saving of chairs.

In other words, if you are not in the chair, you don't have the chair. I don't care if you are eating breakfast, lunch or dinner. That is your deal. Aren't you taking up another CHAIR in the buffet room when you are eating? NO MORE CHAIR SAVING EVER! Chairs are a premium in certain places and all of us know that, but some passengers feel entitled to that space by placing towels, food, shoes, etc on said chairs early in the day and throughout the day to keep the chairs away from everyone else - THIS IS WRONG! We all paid money to be on this cruise and to all use all the same public places and just because a FEW don't know how to behave, then Carnival should step up and start a NO SAVING CHAIR POLICY FOR ANY REASON.

If you are not in the chair - the chair is not yours - PERIOD:eek:

I have never had a problem getting a chair. The only ones that seem to be taken early are the ones next to the pool. There are plenty of chairs away from the pool area or on the next deck up.

Perhaps on port days. On sea days, the exact opposite has been our experience. We head up on deck around 10 or so and have literally walked everywhere there are chairs and have not been able to find 2 together (it's not like we need 8, just 2). We make several sweeps, even in the shade thinking we could simply move the chairs, nothing. Serenity is right out on sea days. The only exception has been on the Fantasy class ships. Our solution is to sail exclusively with balconies now, aft if possible as they are almost always in the sun. However, it has been my experience that in fact, it is next to impossible to find a chair on deck on sea days unless you are up at 6 to put all your worldly possessions on one.

On the Breeze last month , the towel atendents were watching the chairs and would walk out and remove all items left for any length of time . I watched them for a bit , someone leaves a chair or group leaves ,but leaves towel's book's ect after 15-20 minutes they picked up everything and stored behind the towel counter. By day 5-6 they pretty well have the chair hogs trained .

It was really fun seeing people return and the the new chair holders ,responding , there was nothing here when we sat down . The look on their faces ,just staring all around the deck for their stuff. Usually a person sitting nearby would point them to the towel guys , Who let them know not to leave items.

I have only read this far...

I really think in prime places...right by the pool and serenity there should be a limit of sorts...like...after one full day on seven days no all day use... or only 2 hrs at a time or something..I know it is hard but I was great for a chair on my Paradise cruise at Avalon...but no dice ever for 48 hrs at Cabo on Spirit...not a one at pool or Serenity..there I did not move stuff or sit a spell to put on shoes like my hot springs here lol...Sarah

My goodness. Sally and I used to cruise Carnival a lot with our kids because back then we believed Carnival was 2nd only to Disney for family friendly cruises. We stopped sailing Carnival a few years ago when they started making cuts and because we started seeing more of, well let’s say hostility among the passengers. Sally wants to try Carnival again and even signed us up for a cruise next year to see if things have changed. I don’t think I will suggest she read this thread.

Here is a solution:

On day 1 at 3pm, Diamonds get first pick and get to hang a name tag on the chair of their choice and then Platinum's choose and then Gold and Red and Blue get chairs without name tags. If you don't want a chair, don't show up.

I agree with you. Platinum and Diamond just don't get enough

Burt,

We've never seen but one altercation on Carnival, and it was over theater seats on the Dream! (two women, at that!) We have seen some on RCCL, though. (twice!...both times were drunks) Don't worry. Just go and have fun. People making silly threats behind the safety of their computer screens are definitely not something to worry about in real life on your vacation. :)

We've always had great experiences with Carnival and hope you enjoy your next cruise!!!

Yes, we have seen a couple similar situations in the theater and I personally experienced a threat on the deck. The deck experience was that I had scooted my chair into another guy’s space. But the reality was the there just wasn’t any extra room for any chair. Before I could say anything, the stranger on the other side of my wife's chair saw the whole thing and jumped to my defense. And rather loudly. I guess since Sally and I were seated next to his group, he considered us part of his ring of protection.

Our observation is that Caribbean cruises have a different demographic group of passengers than other cruises. I have become cautious of the times, locations and ships that we book in the Caribbean. We sailed Carnival in Alaska and I think they provide one of the best experiences for that itinerary. I understand that their Hawaiian and Panama Cruises are also very nice. We are sailing Carnival in the Mediterranean next year. But the Caribbean rates with other lines is so competitive with Carnival, I’m not sure we will ever do a Carnival Caribbean cruise again.

I've seen people make this claim often on here.

Do you care to share a photo of this for us??

I'm curious about this myself. How can a Carnival towel be taken off the ship without being purchased in the ship store? If they are personal towels, isn't that wrong? We haven't been on Carnival in a while, so I must be missing something.

People bring the Carnival "beach" towels left in the cabin and plop them on a lounger at 6am with plans to return at...some point in the day. Late morning, after lunch, afternoon...who knows? Instead of turning these in to a Carnival employee when they use the unused lounger that's being "saved", evidently some people take them back to their room and take them home.

Never done that one. I'm not interested in causing someone to pay 20 bucks for something they didn't get, BUT I would imagine if that happened often enough people may stop "saving" loungers, too. ...or they'd just plop a white towel on the lounger because that's how they roll...

That is exactly what they do.

Sorry, but by your own explanation, you are a hog. You basically said you saved 12 seats in a prime area all day and only used 4-5 (less than half) at a time. Big groups are the worst about this. If your whole party is never going to be there all at once, why do you feel the need to keep the chairs tied up?

So Carnival holds the passengers responsible for the towels in the room, I see.

One of the most entertaining discussions on the forums is the Rum Runner discussions. I wonder why the moral police on those discussions don't hold the towel stealers accountible? It would make for more entertaining threads. :D

Only the blue ones with the Carnival logo, and they clearly state that passengers will be charged if the same number in the room aren't left in the room upon debarkation. People still lug them to the pool, even though the white ones work fine and there's no charge if those are not the same count. There's one large, blue beach towel for each person in the room (that's been our experience, anyway). We usually never use them and just take a large white one to the beach and to the pool.

And I don't know about the rum runners. I'm sure if they're berated enough all rum runners would become about as obsolete as the chair hogs!! (or not! lol) :D:D:D

Actually I didn't say I was using 12 seats. 2 wicker chairs, a loveseat and 2 loungers. That's room for 6....sort of if you consider the loveseat for 2. And I said at least 4-5 of us were there all the time. Many times more and never were any of the seats empty for more than 30 min. The reality is sometimes one wicker chair was open and occasionally one person was on the loveseat instead of 2. I think it's crazy that people would even notice this (not by the pool) much less freak out about it. But, whatever.

My thought exactly. So I can't go to the bathroom, or walk to the bar to grab a drink, or god forbid walk away for 5 minutes to grab a plate of food? That's rediculous. I was obviously joking before about throwing somebody overboard but if someone took my chair in one of these situations they would definitely get a piece of my mind. Touching someone else's property is rude and evasive and not justified by your asinine belief that it's acceptable to steal my chair if I walk away for a few minutes.

Another option is to have an area on the deck where you could 'check' your valuables, thus eliminating the need to have a place to stash all of your stuff. Punching a hole in the corner of your S&S card and attaching it to a springy keychain (ala hardcore casino players and their loyalty cards) or placing it on a lanyard so that you can keep it with you at all times. I have never been but the new wristbands that they are using at Disney World are intriguing (everything in one deal room key, tickets... everything)

I've read that post twice now and I can't see anywhere that the poster suggested that taking a potty break or getting a drink or even grabbing a plate to bring back would be considered chair hogging. Lots of people eat in their loungers. I'm not a chair hog, though, so I don't read into her words or get offended by them.

She did say, "eating breakfast, lunch or dinner". If you're going to go eat somewhere like the buffett/MDR, which takes longer than 30 minutes (Unless you're the first person in line, scarf it down and run back at top speed. Plus, you're lounger would still be there anyway in that case scenario),then you lose the lounger and will have to find another one when you come back to actually use one. It's not a difficult concept.

I found the easiest solution is to take their stuff off the chair and give it to an attendant, then when they coming looking for it direct them to said attendant.

Totally agree has worked for us everywhere on and off land.

Or we combine there stuff from 3/4 chairs down to one chair and that is only after we watched chairs unused for the 20-30 mins. If you don't like it don't chair hog.

We have been challenged a few times, respond neutrally and they don't even suspect it was you and not someone else. I'm not looking for any conflict. Just looking to have access to all equally. We have also left our stuff at chairs and ran to buffet making it a point that one of us has to quickly return

It's only fair...
